I’ve been working really hard on a big project, I finally finished it, and now I’m bored. I want to play an RPG where I can slaughter hordes of enemies as a pretty girl who looks like me. Yes, I want self-indulgent trash. I’m tired of trying at things, I want to relax, kill things, and see boobs. No MMOs please, I want a...
If you like Prey 2017, and you want to kill things like an absolute monster, and you want to play as a girl, Dishonored 2 is a good fit for all of those things. It’s not indie, and I’m not sure you can see boobs, but it’s a great game by any measure (though it’s not well optimized on PC). It’s not an RPG and it lacks the large skill tree of Prey, but it is an action-forward stealth immersive sim with cool eldritch super powers.
In my headcanon, DOOM 2016’s player character was a genderless force of anger incarnate. No boobs, but power fantasy for sure.
In that vein, if you wanted indie games, you could look for any recent boomer shooter like Viscerafest (yes girl), Ion Fury (yes girl), or Selaco (yes girl). Searching for the “boomer shooter” tag on Steam seems to yield a lot of female protagonist power fantasy games
The only boomer shooter I’ve played lately is Prodeus which doesn’t have a female protagonist but can definitely exemplify the strengths of the boomer shooter subgenre
I’ve been relatively impressed that the image/emoji generation on my iPhone has all been done on my device. Every time I’ve used it, I’ve checked the “Apple Intelligence” server requests log and it’s always empty (until the one time I asked it to generate a photo memory).
My phone gets pretty hot instantly, then churns through 3% of the battery in a minute but it’s still running on a local system with the local battery.
If you’re avoiding the first two Witcher games because they’re somehow not cinematic, you’re sorely mistaken.
Both of those games are incredibly atmospheric to the point of mastery. (tbf you have to be able to forgive the character models in the first game and that can be admittedly difficult because HOLY HELL ZOLTAN ARE YOU OKAY)
I mean Ciri does but she’s a child throughout the books.
Yennefer and Triss are almost only as independent as their insatiable lust for Geralt lets them be. Kind of like Triss and Shani in the Witcher 1 but I’d argue they’re worse in that game than in the books
If Valve really wanted to make a splash, they could release a desktop version of SteamOS in October, right when support for Windows 10 ends. For additional damage, they could bundle in Half-Life 3. Just imagine the coverage this would get.
As someone who uses my desktop for gaming (and maybe web browsing) exclusively, and as someone mildly but not very familiar with OSes, I read this as “SteamOS is bad because of reason I personally don’t like that many people don’t understand, so do more research about Linux”
The barrier to Linux as an OS is not how good it is but how understandable it is. After Pewdiepie’s video went up I’m confident the search phrase “Linux OS download” skyrocketed in popularity because people don’t know let alone understand what a distribution is.
SteamOS is a great intro to Linux for the majority of PC gamers because it’s not only basically ready to use as soon as you boot it up, but also because it is being maintained by a team of people intent on making it the optimal PC gaming platform.
Once Windows users are introduced to a basic Linux experience why not let them take their time learning more about the variables in distros?
Maybe SteamOS is not the perfect distribution because <list your gripes here> but is there a perfect distribution?
Approachability. Valve is a recognizable name and the Steam Deck is notoriously usable in the sea of Linux uncertainty.
Before you say “Linux is totally usable, just look at <examples>” the first question people are prompted with is “What distribution do you want to install?” and there is no singular place that says “this is what you want for this specific use case.”
Valve is not the first name in Linux gaming, but they are a known and trusted name. It’s not just about brand recognition but about trusting a name to guide you through something brand new and extremely daunting. For the vast majority of PC gamers, SteamOS offers a guided introduction to something that previously was stereotyped as complex and difficult to learn.
Is it the best distro? Probably not, but then again it’s extremely easy to migrate from SteamOS to something else when someone discovers they want something else. Until they understand enough about Linux to find that they want something else, SteamOS is currently one of the best ways to get them there
I see all of these “Why SteamOS and why not another distro?” comments and it kinda blows me away how much the idea of approachability designed by a trusted name seems like a foreign concept here.
Then again, we’re talking about Linux fanatics who probably also argue over whether emacs, vim, or vi are the best text editor lol
I’m not vouching for SteamOS as a permanent OS. I’m just defending the strengths of a corporation-maintained distribution of Linux as an introduction to Linux, of which I think SteamOS has many. After being introduced, I think more people will get curious about other things they can do with Linux. It’s really just that starting hump that people need to get over
Btw I appreciate the brief explanation. I was actually having trouble with that sort of thing myself on Bazzite the other day and I was curious why SteamOS differed from Fedora on some specific things.
In all honesty, Rainbow Six: Siege is as ungrindy as any game could be, and it is as endlessly replayable as there are combinations of all the active players. The whole game is about finding ways to use the deep sandbox to outsmart your opponent, utilizing yours and your teammates abilities in unique combinations and it’s wonderful
What a bold-faced clearly obvious motherfucking lie.
Rockstar has released only 2 full games in the past 13 years because everything they’ve done since then has been funded by microtransactions. The price of entry is negligible to them when whales pay for multiple copies of the game every fuckin month.
We’ve all played them. Backtracking, not knowing where to go. Going back and forth. Name some of these games from your memory. I’ll start: Final Fantasy XIII-2, RE1
Big question: Why have alienated young men, especially in America, found their home in the populist political right? Part of the answer is that the populist right takes video games seriously....
the rejection of games in liberal democratic culture
The fucking what? I’m sorry but in my experience playing video games since literally before I could read (Pokemon Yellow was a real struggle for me) the only people who have discouraged my passion for it are the conservative fucking boomers, and absolutely no one else.
The older I get the more gaming has become a legitimate hobby, accepted by more and more people. Older generations have accepted it as a much slower pace, but it’s still happening. The victimhood that these incels perceive is entirely self-imposed.
I had to remember that I bought an Index and Steam Deck on Steam so that has definitely inflated the amount I’ve spent compared to the 3rd party valuation lol
Feels like most shooter games these days are super fast paced, COD style games with 0.5 second reload times and Olympic sprinter running speeds. What are some games that have weightier gameplay mechanics and don’t make you feel like a superhuman?
It’s literally both of these things. Pilots play the extremely fast, twitch-shooting superhuman game while Titans play the slow-paced boots-on-the-ground heavy-weighted gameplay.
It’s the best multiplayer shooter of all time and it survives thanks to the Northstar launcher on PC
Interested in why you call them patriotic “undertones” lol. The patriotism is overt to the point that if you miss that it’s satire you may be missing out on half of the experience of the game
People who play it like COD are the worst players in the game. Everything is designed to reward methodical, team-focused strategy so you can get the upper hand on people who don’t pay attention and try to rush everything.
I tried playing Harvest Moon on the SNES today and having played Stardew Valley for hours, I thought I'd try and see how tolerable the original Harvest Moon was in comparison. I know and understand it is unfair because there's a 20 year gap between Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley, while also discrediting Harvest Moon's later...
Every map in WaW zombies has been re-released at least twice. WaW zombies is cool because of how simple and barebones it is, but holy fucking hell that game was not coded for any sort of melee combat. The zombie bodies are so damn large, according to their hit boxes. Try to run past them but brush up against their pinky? Guess you’re done. Also for some reason the co-op splitscreen is not split vertically, and it’s not split horizontally, each of the two players just gets a quarter of the screen in a tiny box. Who knows why.
I love it to death but it’s real hard to go back to it.
It’s been a while since I looked at a main series Pokémon game and thought, “That looks nice.” This includes last week’s full reveal of Pokémon Legends Z-A, which going from the first bit of footage seems to feature a lot of hazy-edged grey rooftops, futurist UI, and eerily smooth NPCs, and not a lot of consistent,...
Yeah that’s fair. I haven’t cared about Pokemon since the remakes of Sapphire and Ruby during which I didn’t lose a single battle. It was a cool nostalgia trip but since there was absolutely no strategy necessary I never ever wanted to go back since there’s not enough reward for the time sink; it’s just not fun imo.
It sounds basic, but it was refreshing to hear a developer talk about their multiplayer shooter in terms of custom lobby rules and scaring the pants off your buds instead of metas and MMR. We’re in something of a golden age of co-op games about getting scared with your friends—Lethal Company and Phasmophobia made proximity...

Lawbreakers was easily the most fun I had in a multiplayer game ever. Ok, maybe that spot is shared with Titanfall 2, but Lawbreakers is a far better competitive shooter.
I’m still holding out hope that the modding community will crack the server-side code and create a good server browser for it.
The Surge is way better than a sci-fi souls-like attempt that so many reviews seem to argue it is. And Shammy’s review of it really does it better justice than most reviews imo. The limb-targeting system makes it really engaging, and the sequel’s directional parry system adds the depth that Dark Souls and Elden Ring are missing. I highly recommend it for anyone tired of replaying Souls games
Curious to see what they do with the “mouse” function, as well as how well the new Joycon attachment system works (as well as if they have Hall Effect sensors…)
This game always fascinated me as a companion piece to Half-Life. It cemented some things in the HL lore that have just become accepted, while at the same time existing in Schrodinger’s canon....
That was definitely a bold design decision, but I’m glad it paid off for Gearbox. Never before had I played a first person shooter from the perspective of an underpaid pumpkin.
Sea of Thieves has definitely interested me but it looks like one of those games that gets better A) if you invest a lot of time into it and B) if you have friends who play it too all the time, and I already have big time sinks in my life and I suck at convincing my friends to play specific games with me
I played every beta of the Finals that I could get accepted into. It felt like what I wanted a new Battlefield game to be. The destructible floors and bridges made it so much fun to set up traps in ways no other game made it possible.
Weirdly enough I have yet to install it since its full release. Still looks like the same amount of fun!
COD is so interesting because there’s so many of them and so many people play them that it seems there’s always at least someone who loves each of the different games
