MurrayL,

Such a shame NOLF is so deeply mired in rights disputes that we’ll probably never even get a digital rerelease, let alone a sequel.

What category is games like Life is Strange and Until Dawn? angielski

So both Life is Strange and Until Dawn have what’s called the butterfly effect something that’s kind of a questionable concept at best but it’s somewhat real. Telltale was famous for games like this as well. But yeah it’s like depending on your actions it can change the story and thus play more like a movie with a...

MurrayL,

It’s called a branching narrative. Most common related Steam tag for finding similar games would probably be ‘choices matter’.

MurrayL, (edited )

In my experience, if people are going to bounce off the game it’ll come down to one (or more) of three reasons:

  • They hate the flight controls
  • They hate the feeling of being on a constant timer
  • They hate the lack of explicit direction in what to do next

It’s one of my favourite games of all time, and it has good reasons for all of the above, but it’s definitely not for everyone!

And for anyone wondering, my counterpoints to the above would be:

  • Learn to use the autopilot but don’t trust it; learning to manoeuvre precisely will come over time
  • Don’t overthink the timer element; pick just one thing to investigate and focus on that, anything else is a bonus
  • Use the ship’s computer and follow the unknowns; avoid walkthroughs unless you’re absolutely 100% stumped on what to do next
MurrayL,

You can manually restart in OW - it’s an ability you can learn from one of the characters you meet.

MurrayL,

The DC had upscaled art so the old game looked good enough on 1080p screens, plus a few new bits like character portraits.

This is a complete repainting & reanimating of the assets to 4K quality. Very different! Just compare screenshots and you’ll see.

MurrayL,

Not to mention native console ports with crossplay multiplayer

MurrayL,

There are prebuilt solutions in some common engines, and companies like Multiplay that will help with development and hosting, but ultimately it depends on the specific needs of each game.

What works well for one project might be overkill for another, so studios have to spend a lot of time figuring out their needs and building something bespoke for it.

MurrayL,

Turn-based all the way for me. I need time to think about my moves!

I want to love RTS games, but I just don’t have the executive function skills needed to prioritise tasks and make decisions fast enough to do well. Single player against CPU is sometimes doable if there’s an easy mode or cheats, but online multiplayer is just impossible.

MurrayL,

Newer, cheaper competitors like the FPGBC are finally muscling in on the Analogue Pocket’s market, so I guess they’ve decided to double down on being the ‘premium option’.

MurrayL,

This has nothing to do with the subject of the post…

Do you know any singleplayer games that are infinitely replayable? angielski

I recently booted up Half-Life 2 to replay it. I have played the absolute shit out of this game before, so 60% of it just feels like a drag to me now. It was such an amazing game but it’s sort of spoiled for me after I’ve played it too much....

MurrayL,

I’ve played Risk of Rain 2 on and off for years and I’m not bored of it yet

MurrayL,

I don’t disagree with the sentiment, but I don’t see even a single mention of cloud gaming in the article?

This is about studio closures and a disconnect between MS’s actions and the types of games they say they want.

MurrayL,

Mostly agree, except I’ve never liked the dpad on the 360 controller. An XB1 or Series S|X controller is a noticeable step up IMO!

MurrayL,

The return on indie games (if there even is a return) is already vanishingly small for 99% of releases - printing and distributing physical copies would just be pouring even more money down the drain.

MurrayL, (edited )

Except for all the small studios also struggling or going out of business because getting investment right now is really, really hard.

The megacorp closures and redundancies are far from the entire story, they’re just the headline grabbers.

MurrayL,

I think BioShock just got grandfathered in through its System Shock lineage.

MurrayL,

And yet that’s exactly how they operate!

Valve: How going boss-free empowered the games-maker

… But you’re right that it is often considered the cause of many of their problems: Valve’s unusual corporate structure causes its problems, report suggests

MurrayL,

Wow - Take Two shuttering this studio AND Roll7 (OlliOlli, Rollerdrome) just a month after they announced they’re buying Gearbox for almost half a billion. Absolutely catastrophic mismanagement. What a shitshow.

MurrayL,

It’s easier to rant about a boogeyman like SBI than to engage with any of the actual issues facing the industry, unfortunately

MurrayL,

I’m really not a fan of the trend for really long video essays, especially since it’s almost always padding and repeating similar points.

Anything up to 25 mins is usually fine, but 35+ is in the realm of ‘I’ll add it to Watch Later but never bother watching it’ and over an hour I’m just going to keep scrolling

MurrayL,

I don’t think we need an article to figure out the answer: Slay the Spire was a megahit and it’s a copycat industry.

I don’t necessarily mean that in a bad way either; there’re always plenty of devs finding interesting new angles on the current hot genre and creating genuinely interesting new games in the process, but also a huge number of devs that end up just chasing the trend and releasing something uninspired/derivative.

MurrayL,

How would you say it compares to the original, since I can see you played both recently?

MurrayL,

Since people have already covered the modern games, I’ll offer two classic suggestions: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat Armageddon.

MurrayL,

“I talked to at least five small teams, like 35 [members] and under, during GDC, and they’re like: Cuts, cuts, cuts, funding canceled, talks that were going on for a year, canceled,” said Casey Yano, the co-founder of Slay the Spire studio Mega Crit. “It sounds like it’s shit. We’re definitely very privileged to be able to self-fund. [Otherwise] I’d be very, very, very scared right now.”

If these deals didn’t exist, lots of games simply wouldn’t get made. You can hate on the platforms all you like but the deals are one of the only sources of funding for small & solo developers.

What games do you recommend for my girlfriend? angielski

My girlfriend has never really gamed. But she’s now forced to move less than she would like to (health problem) and she’s getting bored. I was thinking of introducing her to a game or two that we could play together. She’s not the real action game type, and seeing as she has no experience with controller/mouse and keyboard...

MurrayL,

There’s a game called A Little to the Left that’s a whole bunch of lovely organisational + sorting puzzles

What adventure games do you recommend? angielski

pretty much the title. i have played most of sierra, lucasarts and telltale catalogues so if you are suggesting one of their games i’ve probably already played it. it doesn’t have to be a copycat, homage or in the same style as these companies’ games either, just that it must satisfy the vague definition of being an...

MurrayL,

Basically the entire Wadjet Eye catalogue, and the first two games in the Broken Sword series (then stop - the 3D ones are crap)

MurrayL,

At this point, are there any corporations left that haven’t owned jagex at some point?

MurrayL,

As mentioned in the article, these are all union VAs and their new agreement explicitly protects them from AI being used without their permission.

If it turns out they really did use AI to rework some of the voice lines, there could be a major lawsuit coming…

MurrayL,

As a dev who has worked on mobile games:

  1. The stores have a serious problem with discovery which makes it unreasonably difficult to find the good original games in the sea of shovelware, but the good stuff IS out there.
  2. People say they hate free-to-play and that they’d happily pay once for access like a normal game, but the stats say otherwise. Almost no one pays for premium mobile games, and that’s why no one bothers making them.
  3. People who use ‘mobile game’ as an insult are usually wilfully ignorant about the platform and just have an axe to grind.
MurrayL,

If you don’t finish Y6 (or at least watch the cutscenes on YouTube or read a story summary) then the setup for MWEHN won’t make sense. Judgment and Ishin are standalone spin-offs so they can be played at any point.

MurrayL,

There’s no such thing as a zero-effort port

MurrayL,

More experience? Remedy have been making games since the 90s

MurrayL,

Achievement % stats are so comically skewed by various factors that they mean basically nothing. There’s an achievement in Minecraft for literally just opening your inventory for the first time but only 60% of Xbox players have it.

MurrayL,

Or neither. Platform cert doesn’t directly correlate to how many bugs a game has, it’s a set of very specific test cases that software has to pass to be approved for release: show the correct button prompts for the platform, have correctly-implemented achievements/trophies, show correct error messages, etc.

Some of the tests do include things like ‘don’t crash during normal operation’, but the failures could be almost anything. (Source: am a developer)

MurrayL,

Yeah, except they were also so horribly designed that normal use literally grinds away the plastic at the base of the stick until it starts flopping around like a wet noodle.

MurrayL,

There’s MobyGames, but it’s often out of date or missing information.

Private
MurrayL,

Fortnite most definitely does have modding - have you not checked out Creative/UEFN?
