I’ve got premium till May next year, always buy on Black Friday sales, cancelled my renewal, I can’t justify that price. Hopefully everyone cancels their renewal, they get the message and undo the damage.
Yeah I’m not going to pay any more than what I already pay for PS+ just to help people on Elden Ring. I don’t play any of the shit they give you on PS+ anyway so I’m out.
I know it’s become a meme, but because capitalism. I’m surprised gamers more gamers aren’t against it because it only ever makes our favorite hobby so much worse.
I find 10$ a very decent value, far from greedy to be honest. This is not the same as TLOU part 1 where you had to pay full price even if you already had a previous version.
At least it seems decent. I’m a fan of Rune Factory franchise but can’t fathom the latest Rune Factory 3 Special, which is an AI upscaled of the original on NDS

The tech difference between the PS4 and PS5 is massive.
It genuinely can be a complete overhaul, more than just graphically. Also worth noting is that the $10 cost is just the difference in pricing from last gen, and doing split gen like that has let them keep the PS4 versions the same pricing without making them rebuy games when they get a new console. They just make up the difference.
I don't and won't buy a lot of full priced games because I can wait, but their approach really isn't that bad.
I have trouble reconciling that with the PC market, where the same version of a game I bought 4 years ago would be able to run at better resolutions and frame rates the next time I get a new machine. From where I sit, it does just appear to be worse value in the console space.
Are they still going to auto renew this shit even though they massively increased the price? That should be illegal. I would have never seen the increase until after it was billed if not for this post.
Do you guys remember when prices used to go up like 3-5%? I guess corporations started taking notes from the fricken DMV.
Considering their subscription competitor costs $204 a year while they were at $120/yr, I think it’s pretty clear why they boosted the upper tiers so much. Even with this price increase, it’s still $44 cheaper than Ultimate and imo a better overall value in terms of game quality.
What’s really trash is that they’re increasing the price of the base PS+ membership, and by so much. It now costs $150 a year to play just Madden, CoD, or EA Soccer, on top of a minimum $400 console purchase. That’s absurd. I would say this is a W for Xbox, but they already tried to increase the price of Gold and they’ll definitely try again now that they know there’s no escaping it.
The base tier is entirely bullshit. You shouldn’t need to pay them money to access the internet that you already pay another company for. The base tier shouldn’t exist.
Oh yeach paying for playing online games is such a bulshit. I never really complained about it online beacuse i was buying ps plus on ps3 when it only gave you games ( beacuse i do buy it only for games and i would never pay it to play online games) so it never really affected me but this is such a bs. Im suprised there wasnt a bigger outcry against it.
I would agree with your last statement, but in the case of Xbox i think it is by design. They already excitedly talk about windows handhelds being the future and its because the console market has almost always been a loss, even back to the Sega selling massively under production cost to try and take ground from Nintendo. Games were always what made the profit.
In the case of Xbox, their business model for a long time has been moving to a live service streaming model, i don’t think they want to be in the console market. If they can move their app on all kinds of devices, they can skip the investment of the console and instead focus on what the real profit driver was all along.
As long as there are killer 1st party titles exclusive to a console platform, there’s a reason to buy one.
Counterargument: some of us consider this kind of arbitrary BS a reason NOT to buy one.
And that’s before you even consider the additional crap consoles pull, like Nintendo making the only way to back up your saves a fucking subscription service.
Especially now that there are maybe 2 or 3 “killer apps” per the life cycle of a console at this point. Why would I pay $600 to buy a console, just for 3 exclusives?
If there was an entire panel of awesome exclusives like back in the PS3/360 era, it would make more sense. But as it stands, the amount of good games on PC just dwarfs what’s on any console.
And people will still pay it, just like people bought Switch 2s in record numbers and just like the ROG Ally X (Xbox handheld) will sell well.
I’m sure those who say they won’t are telling the truth, but most of them were never planning on buying it. Those who were will roll over like they always do.
It’s sad, but I’m somewhat rooting for $80-100 games and other BS like this, because I know at some point the frog will jump out of the water, we’ll have another video game crash, and after a few years things will return to sanity. But unlike last time, we all have huge backlogs — it won’t hurt gamers nearly as much as it will big publishers. I think it may even be good for indies.
What I’m really rooting for though: more indie games, more weird games, more dumb games that appeal to a niche and are loved by them for years to come that most people don’t get. A shift away from platform exclusivity. A shift away from Windows to both Mac and Linux. Something like Proton (LInux tool for emulating Windows games) on Mac. I’m fine with gaming being fine on Windows and Xbox, but it should still be fine if you don’t want to throw any money at Microsoft.
I just bought a PS4 to hack …it’s on 11.52. Pawn shop I ordered it from said they upgraded it just to make sure I could play games on it. How thoughtful of them :(
That blows. I never had a ps4, so I don’t know the whole deal about modding/rooting it. It is crazy that some of these devices have “fuses” that can brick your device if tampered with. It is my device dammit.
Yea if the company no longer is updating the product I should be allowed to have root access. Open source when your done making money on it.
No to be fair, I understand why NOT. Based on software sales. But still. It’s why I always stick with PC gaming and consoles are the guilty pleasure. I don’t pay for online or anything.
What a world we live in, where cheaper games are seen as less quality because the theory of capitalism has conditioned us to believe higher quality = higher price.
Normally I’d say it’s a greedy cash grab, but it’s $10 upgrade path for existing owner, instead of reselling it for $50 - $70? Also there’s a new rouge-like / souls-like mode? Maybe branding this release as ‘remaster’ is not doing them any favor, it’d probably better for them to market it as free PS5 upgrade and a survival mode expansion for $10.
Ian Stokes (@IanVanCheese) from Twitter posted that “If I was Sony, I would maybe let my S-tier studio that excels at making new IPs and interesting games actually make new games, instead of forcing them to photocopy their previous A+ report card for eternity”
to which Jordan Middler from VGC (@JordanMiddler) replied “From what I was told from one person, this was more of a project for new hires to get them in the game. Druckmann’s team is full steam ahead on original. One doesn’t takeaway from the other afaik”
I really hope that Naughty Dog would move on to do something more cheerful than TLOU, the mood is just too oppressive and taxing, especially in TLOU2 where the game is very long.
I personally think TLOU2 is one of the most effective works of art in the entire medium and I love the game top to bottom, but I’m also overjoyed to hear they’re working on something else now.
I too hope it’s more cheerful, for the exact same reasons.
