What upgrade? Can someone copy the article here, the website says I'm blocked

UsernameIsTooLon,

4k streaming. That’s it. The article just copies and pastes around “4k” as much as possible but that’s the only feature.

Disaster, do games w Valve gives Steam Remote Play a long overdue upgrade

I wish they’d give SteamVR on Linux a long overdue upgrade.

And by upgrade I mean “Make it look like it’s a project which is even alive”

It needs the same treatment as Big Picture and now Remote Play have gotten even on Windows, too. It’s clunky and really kinda shit. It still uses the old Big Picture UI as a base. And I don’t mean the one recently upgraded from; I mean the one before that.

Wonder how this would compare to moonlight + sunshine combo.

emogu,

Exactly what I was thinking. I’m still running on the fumes of gfe+moonlight while thats still working. Hopefully Steam RP has taken cues from all the recent competition.

But as with all RP options it’s probably still gonna be a ymmv situation.

CarlosCheddar,

One plus of remote play is that I can set the controller bindings via Steam Input. On moonlight I wasn’t able to do the same since it just seemed to emulate an xbox controller.

Hopefully this includes bug fixes and more compatibility with linux?

I’ve been trying and failing to get my Debian host to stream to an Nvidia Shield Pro

ivanafterall, do games w Half-Life is not dead, as new Steam record shows Valve we all still care

Seems like kind of a weird gesture given that Alyx was released only three years ago. By Valve standards, that's still considered hot off the presses.

rich,

And Alyx is incredible

I’ve only had a select few genuine “holy fuck” moments during gaming where I have genuinely been stunned. One being Mario 64 in 1996, the other being Half Life Alyx.

It’s a shame it’s in a medium that restricts how many people can actually play the thing. The VR-less mod does the game a huge disservice.

nanoUFO,
@nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’m going to guess most people into half life aren’t going to sink $1000 into computer upgrades and a VR headset.

ElectroLisa,
@ElectroLisa@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Half-Life: Alyx doesn’t require a NASA PC, and you can play it on cheaper headsets like Quest 2, or even older used ones like Rift S or HTC Vive

julianh,

Yeah I used my $600 PC and a ~$300 Windows mixed reality headset. Far from ideal tbf but still a mind-blowing experience.

sanpedropeddler,

It requires a fairly good PC. I played it on my budget rig with a used rift s. I was very glad I don’t get motion sick easily because it was very often well below 60fps.

ElectroLisa,
@ElectroLisa@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

My PC has an RX 580 and it works fine for me, I’d say that’s a budget GPU

Thepolack,

Are you telling me a new Half Life game came out three years ago and I missed it?

AdmiralShat,

VR only

Master,
@Master@sh.itjust.works avatar

There is a non-vr mod for it.

gk99,

It’s not worth playing non-VR. To be blunt, all of the game elements other than graphics really kinda suck from a traditional gameplay perspective and are forgiven or ignored because of what VR adds. The levels are claustrophobic, the weapon and enemy variety is horrid, the AI was handicapped to make it easier to shoot in VR, there isn’t even a jump button or melee attack in a franchise known as a boomer shooter with a crowbar-wielding protagonist. It’s not a traditional Half-Life game and trying to play it as one will likely lead to disappointment.

The reverse isn’t true, playing the VR mods for the rest of the franchise is a blast and there are plenty of amazing VR conversions for other games, so I find it saddening this is the direction Valve took for Alyx.

sanpedropeddler,

Its definitely not what you usually get in a half life game but I wouldn’t say its not worth playing without vr. If you’re willing to live with the differences then you can still enjoy it.

julianh,

My impression from participating was that it was more for fun rather than trying to make a statement. It was cool to see multiple full servers.

    Thanks, that’s a very interesting triva. Also reminded me to finally play Ion Fury I’ve bought so long ago. I’m even more interested in the game now

    Game: Tempest Rising

    Niggling__Niggard,

    Thanks, it’s incomprehensible how OP didn’t even manage to mention it in either the title or the blurb up above. Is he a bot or something?

    Broken_Monitor,

    Its not a surprise either, these guys have put out a couple preview trailers and have been promoting the game for like a year now. Looks cool, been on my wish list for awhile

    Blizzard,

    And why does he keep calling it “Steam RTS”? Kind of suggests it was developed by Valve.

  • Blizzard,

    Yeah, I get what you mean.

    commandar,

    It's SEO-optimization nonsense.

    DrQuint,

    Specially weird given that there was a whole thing with Neon Prime MAYBE having RTS elements. Someone might confuse themselves crossing those wires. This title just sucks.

    Nice one, I miss playing those games. Any idea of format?

    What do you mean by format? I played it at PAX.

    @smort@lemmy.world avatar

    How’d you like it?

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

    It's modern enough but old school. I had barely sampled C&C back in the day (this game, I'm told, is a lot like C&C3), but I played a ton of StarCraft, and the mission they gave on the show floor was definitely great for showing off the unit escalation and rock paper scissors of it all. If you're looking for another one of those, there's a good chance they nailed it. For me, however, I think I'd like to see a different take on the genre, at least for multiplayer. The fog of war would instill a sense of dread in me that no amount of scouting could ever alleviate, and while winning a game of an RTS is super empowering, losing felt so awful that I'm not sure I want to do it again. They're seemingly not changing anything drastic and just making another one of those, which is fine, because there aren't a lot of those. I'm much less interested in playing games with a mouse these days, but somehow this game has full controller support listed on the store page. I know AOE2 got updated with clever controller options, but like I said; they're not rocking the boat with this game, so it's surprising that they somehow have controller inputs working. When I played the demo, it was on a mouse and keyboard.

    I'm also not familiar enough with C&C to know what this game is doing different from C&C. But a lot of old designs aren't broken and could just use modernization. Look at the last few games Mimimi has made, modernizing Commandos and Desperados. At this point, I'm desperate for "boomer shooters" to catch up to the 00s in design, because no one really makes FPS games like that anymore. A friend of mine was playing some TimeSplitters: Future Perfect on Discord, and I never played those games in their heyday, but I would absolutely be into them. There just aren't games made like that anymore, and I miss them. This game could be that for RTS or C&C fans.

    Side note. There are allegedly TimeSplitters and Perfect Dark games on the way. I fully expect Perfect Dark's campaign to not resemble that first game at all and for its multiplayer to be a live service extraction shooter, because that's what these big companies think people want. To be clear, this is based on nothing but feelings, conjecture, and cynicism, and I'm usually not very cynical. And if TimeSplitters ever does come back like they say it is, I expect it to be exactly what I want because they can't afford to build the thing that's going to ruin Perfect Dark.

    As for BG3, the way Larian makes those games systems driven, such that you can say, "I wonder if this works" and it usually does, is doing more than just playing on nostalgia, and it is doing things that video games excel at, even if it's still doing things outlined in the tabletop game.

    But does it have Kane???

    DarkThoughts, do gaming w New Steam RTS is basically a surprise Command and Conquer sequel

    I'm not super interested in classic RTS anymore, thanks to 4X, but I'll keep an eye out for it and try the playtest. I still have my doubts that it will capture the same charm as the original C&C though. Especially someone like Kane will be hard to replace, and I feel he was such a big face for NOD that drove the whole story & mysteries forward.

    Looks interesting. It basically looks like a new C&C, which is a good thing. Apparently they have opened up playtesting according to my Steam, so let’s see how things are going

    Yeah, the numbers also show that TF2 has always been alive and popular. Valve don’t care about anything.
