BruceTwarzen, do gaming w 30 years and lightyears of progress

I remember playing a soccer game on the n64 on a friends house. His mom came in and did some Smalltalk. She asked who was winning. We pointed at the guy who was winning. She said: no, the football game.
We were a bit confused until we realised that she thought it's a real game that we were watching on tv. I saw how her mind was blown in real time. On my way home, i thought that it makes sense, because the games these days look so real. In hindsight tho, what the fuck

Ottomateeverything, (edited )

I’d bet some of this is CRTs and public non-digital television at the time.

While we can look at current N64 graphics and compare it to IRL, we’re like “HUH? Not even close”. But that’s not the comparison that was happening in the 90s.

In the 90s, sports were usually shot on a shitty film camera, then converted into signals that ran at 480p and broadcast across shitty infrastructure. These were then shown on really fuzzy CRTs with awful washed out colors and blown up really large. Not to mention, if you didn’t have cable (which many people didnt), we’re also talking radio transmission and bunny ears which even further shittied the picture. What real sports looked like on TV was also, by today’s standards, total ass.

But now we have digital cameras sending 4k digital signals to high resolution and vivid color TVs. It’s totally different.

Not to mention, the fuzziness of CRTs made N64 era graphics seem better because it would essentially anti alias for you and such and make things look rounder than they actually were, which was one of the hardest things to do in that era.

It’s hard to even relate to this because even if you go find a sports broadcast from the and watch it now, you’re still not experiencing the shitty CRT and it’s pathetic reproduction. You kind of can’t even see how bad this shit was unless you watch like someone’s home camcorder recording a CRT and watch THAT footage.

Does it excuse her? Not entirely. I’m sure if you really looked you could figure it out during closeups of the players and such. But at a passing glance, this is way more understandable if you think about what her reference for what “real sports on TV” looked like.

Ark. The original anyways, I refuse to buy 1.5. It was a poorly optimized piece of shit full of broken crap yet I couldn’t stay away. That is, until, it became so bloated I couldn’t fit it on my SSD anymore.

Speculater,
@Speculater@lemmy.world avatar

God, I hated that game. No days off, because I have to fucking feed my dinosaurs, that up until I caught them, knew exactly how to find food.

Pika,

The only saving grace on it was that if you were on private servers that were mostly PVE, you could just capture them all in cryopod and then you only had to log in like once every two or three weeks instead of every 3 days cuz all you have to do is generator

Wermhatswormhat,

I did all my time in single player because if I got to some dumb unoptimized/bug I could cheat my way back because fuck them. I too will not buy this BS 1.5 either. They had their chance. I’m still bitter that instead of fixing the base game they got dollar signs in their eyes and just started releasing dlc.

EdibleFriend,
@EdibleFriend@lemmy.world avatar

Everyone was pissed when they started putting out DLC in a busted ass early access so they just went all ‘mission accomplished’ and said the game was done.

casual_turtle_stew_enjoyer, do gaming w Oh trust me. I know your frustration better than you do.

Idgaf about the orientation typically. But if it’s gonna be explicitly called out, then it better be significant to the character’s identity, otherwise it’s just meaningless attempts for the developer to ingratiate themselves with the LGBTQ without so much as providing a representative character of substance. I can’t think of any examples of these off the top of my head, but there were some games and/or shows where I lost interest because every character was whatever different flavor of sexual and I was just like “this contributes nothing at all to the story, who tf cares about that shit?”

kofe,

Recommend looking into “mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors” by Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop for academic discussion on it. TL;DR it’s good for kids.

maynarkh,

then it better be significant to the character’s identity

I was saying the same thing a few years back, but now I don’t even think it’s the case. I think it’s more like “if it’s significant to the character’s identity or the game’s world, make it make sense”.

For example, Cyberpunk’s Judy was a great character. You could have several full playthroughs, and wouldn’t know she was into girls if you didn’t try to jump her bones that one time. You could maybe infer she was more than just good friends with that other character. And that’s how it should be. I mean in normal conversation it comes up very rarely who are you into sexually.

All I’m saying, it’s not natural in real life to know who everyone would do in real life, and it’s not natural in a video game.

Katana314,

I have a story plan I’m tossing around, and trying to decide something around this. It’s nothing so complex - basically, there’s a nation that has historically been extremely homophobic, and as a result, a mid-sized cabal of defectors that the book follows are gay. One of those situations where an observer (in or out of universe) could tiredly claim it doesn’t matter to them, except that it apparently does matter to this fictional nation.

casual_turtle_stew_enjoyer,

That’s the perfect counterexample, because their sexual identity is directly tied to their motive in the story’s conflict. That is the kind of writing that deserves respect.

Honytawk,

Eh, I’ve seen plenty of attempts of character having a heterosexual tendencies while there is no need for them. Like tons of Disney movies.

If people don’t get bothered by those, then they shouldn’t be bothered by LGBTQ+ characters having their sexuality shoehorned in.

In the end, a character is a character. And there are people acting extremely flamboyant in the real world, so why wouldn’t they be allowed to exist in media?

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

I had this in Warhammer 40k: Darktide the other day. I had VC, this guy didn’t and was on Xbox so typing was difficult. He was doing some really bizarre shit and I just said “Man what the hell are you doing?” And he just looked at me and crouched repeatedly, slowly, and stared and I just said “Okay” and followed him.

He knew of a shortcut on the map that none of us knew about that took us down some paths with a ton of items that were hella useful.

Aussiemandeus,
@Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone avatar

See that’s a great story, i worry things like that will have gone by the way side now.

I remember in halo accidentally shooting a team mate and crouching to apologise.

Weirdly in games that bought in waving etc, Day-Z etc if someone crouches i trust it if someoe waves i know they’re going to shoot my in the back

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah. Elden Ring applies to the waves too. Bows and crouches? Respect. Waves? They’re gonna be a toxic prick.

teft,
@teft@lemmy.world avatar

“Try jumping.”

That fucking message is either a long walk back or some good loot. God i love elden ring but i really hate the messages on the ground.

NakariLexfortaine,

Halo Crouching was really up in the air, though.

From an enemy, it could be a sign of trust. It could also be a taunt, telling you what to expect.

From a teammate, it could be “Wait, someones ahead”, or it could be “Imma kill him as he teabags you, and then Imma teabag both of you.”

You just never knew.

Grass,

This exact exchange in many games. What a nostalgia hit.

TaintPuncher,

Honestly, probably my favourite thing about the Titanfall 2 online community. Can be in a heated match but if you’re in a Titan and encounter an enemy pilot frantically crouching at you, you are honour-bound to start a crouching dance party.

It is the law.

IronicDeadPan,

Damnit, now I feel like an asshole…I would do this with people on opposing team when I played cod blops and mw2. I would get annoyed after a while and would drop my claymore or a grenade to get out of the situation. Always felt awkward, in a game to kill each other, but you want me to follow you around? Nah…

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

this is like half the reason why DRG is so good, there’s so many rituals the community has developed and most of them have voice lines from mission control telling you to knock it off (which of course makes it that much funnier)

it’s kinda strange there’s no crouching though, i want to see my fellow dwarves crouching at light speed before doing something incredibly stupid

I admit I had never heard of them nor their games.

EDIT: Apparently the game sucked and nobody bought it? Looking at some random gameplay video, it really looks like a mess.

dinckelman,

Really not upset about it at all. They’ve lied to people, mislead everyone, gave false or incomplete descriptions of the product, and then released a horribly buggy asset dump, that doesn’t look anything like the pre-rendered clip they’ve shown forever ago

Aielman15,

Oh, I see. As I said, I had never heard of them or their games before today, so I was missing the context.

My sister’s partner has a kid, with a woman he had a one-night-stand with. She’s an absolute fucking psycho, borderline negligent mother. Just about competent enough that social services do fuck all, but incompetent enough that the poor girl (who’s now 3) is blatantly falling behind in terms of development. And nothing he can do as he only has her 50% of the time.

This is in my top 10 favorite games of my childhood. Loved this game so much! It blew my mind as a kid that you could maneuver your units around while sieging a castle. Even more so, was the fact that there were many different castle/fort maps to battle on. I was expecting it to be an automated battle when sieging. This game shined in its gameplay mechanics.
