Publisher reveals and immediately cancels new Postal game after fans accuse it of using AI generation (www.rockpapershotgun.com) angielski

Postal: Bullet Paradise developers Goonswarm have fiercely denied the accusations that they used generative AI to create elements of the game… and announced that they are closing down....

Just to clarify a little bit (I was a little confused myself):

Postal was developed by the studio Goonswarm. The publisher Running With Scissors cancelled their games release because of the AI claims, and in response the developers have closed their studio, probably due to the financial strain of having your game completely cancelled by your publisher.

“After revealing POSTAL: Bullet Paradise, a title Running With Scissors was planning on publishing but not developing, we’ve been overwhelmed with negative responses from our concerned POSTAL Community,” reads a statement from Running With Scissors founder Vince Desi, emailed to RPS this afternoon. "The strong feedback from them is that elements of the game are very likely AI-generated and thus has caused extreme damage to our brand and our company reputation.

“We’ve always been, and will always be, transparent with our community,” Desi continues. "Our trust in the development team is broken; therefore, we’ve killed the project. We have a lot of good things coming (some you know and some you don’t).

“Since forming Running With Scissors in 1996, we’ve always said that our fans are part of the team,” it concludes. “Our priority is to always do right by the millions who support the POSTAL franchise. We are grateful for the opportunity to make the games we want to play, and will continue to focus on our new projects and updates coming in 2026 and beyond. We can’t wait to share more!”

Postal: Bullet Paradise was once “a timeline-hopping, dystopian bullet heaven first-person shooter with POSTAL’s signature darkly humorous personality”. The project is “no longer available” on Steam, though it still has a page as of writing.

Desi’s statement doesn’t mention which elements of the game may have been AI-generated, or whether they’ve taken any steps to confirm this with Goonswarm.

It seems like the publisher hasn’t done much to work with the devs, finding the true story instead of reacting to knee-jerk public opinions, and has just pulled the rug out from under them to protect themselves instead.

The devs have adamantly insisted there is no AI in their work; and if true, this really really sucks.

Lora Croft, or the Great Fairy? Who did it better?

If you’re being given a ton of ammo and health in a video game; odds are there’s a reason you’ll need it just around the next corner or two…

Ordered merch from Bioware mid-November for an xmas present. It arrived Jan 4th; they shipped the wrong product.

Contacted them 3 seprate times through their ‘contact us’ page and got ignored for 3 weeks. It wasn’t until I filed a chargeback with my cc that they finally emailed me (4 days after submission).

I had asked for my money back in my various emails; but they didn’t respond to that at all and just shipped me a new package.

Still haven’t gotten that, so no idea if they actually shipped the right item this time. It’s not listed on their site anymore; so they likely don’t have inventory to ship.

We’ll see what’s in the box whenever it gets here.

I’ll never spend another dime with EA/BioWare.

The cover was for when you didn’t have the expansion pak. It covered the default memory pak.

The expansion pak had a red top that filled the space the cover took up. Making the cover obsolete.

OP does not have an expansion pak.

Darkassassin07,
@Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca avatar

Na, OP only has the default mem pak.

The expansion had a red top that filled the space for the cover.

Darkassassin07,
@Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca avatar

Huh, guess I remember wrong. Could have sworn it took up the covers space…

Darkassassin07,
@Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca avatar

:/

Until I zoom right in, it looks grey like the game cartridge in that photo. I’m mistaken on its size, could have sworn it took up the covers space.

It was required for more games though. Majoras Mask for example.

The Great Fairy in LOZOOT was something else…

I kinda want to go break out the N64 emulator and play through it again now.

I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the original. It was one of the first games I ever played and very much my favorite.

Debating on buying a physical copy+console once I’m a bit less strapped for cash.

Yo OP, your link is broken…

This hyperlink

Does not work.

That’s what I was pointing out and providing an amended link.

Darkassassin07,
@Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca avatar

Indeed.

The post also contains a link to github as well as a link to youtube.

The github link does not work, hence my comment.

I wasn’t trying to assign blame…

Just noticed it didn’t work when I tried it, so I added the working one for others to follow if they wish.

But the crowd mentally needs something to be pissed about; so go ahead, pile on some more downvotes. Glad I could provide some release.

Github isn’t taking Nintendo to court over one of their users projects. They just comply with the takedown request and remove it. The user/dev isn’t going to fight Nintendo to bring it back either.

What? Has it been to long since the last classified documents leak?

Darkassassin07,

My bank has a character limit, but they don’t tell you about it; they just trim the password you’ve set before hashing + saving it, then when you go to login if you don’t trim your password the same way they did, login fails.

I only know this because the mobile app will actually grey out the login button as soon as you enter more than the character limit. The web app just leaves you to be confused.

Darkassassin07,
@Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca avatar

Can’t say I’ve ever tried to use a password quite that long, so I’m not sure.

Not ideal, but trimming it (especially when you’re keeping 60 chars) isn’t the end of the world. It was just super confusing that the web app doesn’t trim it during login as well. There’s no indication that your password was modified or what you’ve entered to login is too long. Just ‘incorrect user/pass’ despite entering what you’ve just set. That char limit for my bank is only 16 chars, so it’s easy to hit.
