ICastFist, do games w Employees at FromSoftware owner Kadokawa reportedly "thrilled" about possible Sony takeover
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

Better title: Kadokawa employees are reportedly “optimistic” about the takeover. Subtitle: Kadokawa owns FromSoftware

Kadokawa suffered a ransomware cyberattack earlier this year, but employees were left disappointed by the response from current president and CEO Takeshi Natsuno.

As a result, employees are said to be “thrilled at the prospect of an acquisition by Sony”, according to a new report from Japanese outlet Bunshun (via Automaton).

HAAHAHAHA, Oh The Onion, you guys are… It’s not The Onion… (for anyone that doesn’t get it, PSN has been hacked a couple of times)

Anyway, the “thrill” comes from the expectation that the current Kadokawa leadership will get the boot from the acquisition.

chicken, do games w Beyond Good & Evil 2's troubled development due to "passionate managers" not getting along, says creator Michel Ancel

There reaches a point with vaporware projects where it’s like, actually release something or I don’t care anymore, it doesn’t deserve to keep getting press

Refined strategy of ceasing to exist?

DdCno1, do gaming w Sony shuts down Concord developer Firewalk Studios, game will remain permanently offline

I wonder if there is still going to be a Concord episode in the upcoming animated videogame-themed TV show “Secret Level”. A month ago, this was confirmed, but at that point, it wasn’t decided yet whether Firewalk Studios would be closed.

Cyv_,

If the work was already done to make the episode I think it should still be included. The artists and animators for it shouldn’t suffer because the thing their story was based on flopped.

DdCno1, (edited )

That’s an idealistic point of view and certainly an admirable one, but it might not be realistic. Perhaps Sony execs simply don’t want people to be reminded of this flop they signed off on.

hopefully they don’t get clowned on Social Media because of a Concord episode if ever released, Blur Studio are amazing

k_rol, do gaming w Eurogamer: It's been 12 months since Microsoft purchased Activision Blizzard, so what's changed?

Heroes of the storm has been getting some updates instead of just being dead. I’m a happy camper 🥲

The most surprising thing I read on this thread

DebatableRaccoon, (edited ) do gaming w Take-Two is reportedly set to close Roll7 and Intercept and sell off Private Division

Is this interesting timing or is he going out of his way to prove his point?

Pantrygheist,

It won’t be ai, it will be greedy c-suits who will fire everyone

DebatableRaccoon,

I know. My comment was about if he’s trying to prove himself right by firing everyone just in time for the use of AI. Hell was invented for scum suckers like Strauss Zelnick

JohnBrownsBussy2, do gaming w Kerbal Space Program 2 studio reportedly shut down by Take-Two
@JohnBrownsBussy2@hexbear.net avatar

It’s been an absurd mishandling of the IP by Take Two. Will probably be permanently stuck in early access with only maintenance development at best.

Shou, do games w Niantic: Pokémon Go healthy and growing as it approaches its next decade

ABCDE,

There’s more to it than that.

I tried it way back when it launched, and before that, the whatever previous non-pokemon game they made. I didn’t stick to it, and today I wouldn’t touch a location tracking game with a long pole, but there was more fun in it than just collecting fake creatures or whatever. Going out for a walk and making my way to places marked on the game map was cool. I found some interesting landmarks that I had no idea about before.

Fubarberry, do games w Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom devs explain why it was a much bigger overhaul than you'd think
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

Honestly I don’t think anyone can really look at TotK and not think it was a massive undertaking. They took the giant open world of BotW, made it bigger, and added a ton of more physics interactions, and have it running on a 7-year-old gaming tablet. It’s incredible they could do that at all.

Uvine_Umbra, do gaming w Switch emulator Yuzu shuts down as creator agrees to pay Nintendo $2.4m

Fucking hell… Makes sense though, they earned 30k a year, 200k ain’t enough to challenge the bankroll potential of Nintendo.

this is beyond awful, especially to us with broken switches who want to play the games we own in these times, and everyone who can’t/ won’t afford their shit.

This is the bullshit that deserves shouting and death threats, not people making a subpar decision for a game or a bad one.

Goopadrew, do gaming w Disco Elysium standalone expansion reportedly cancelled and quarter of staff facing redundancy at ZA/UM

How to destroy your up-and-coming indie studio in three simple steps!

  1. Publicly fuck over the two people most responsible for your massively successful IP, ensuring they’ll never work with you again
  2. Cancel any follow-up to your massively successful IP and continue with projects nobody cares about
  3. Fire the rest of the staff responsible for your only successful IP
thejml,

I’ve been at two startups in my career. Both venture capital financed. Even though they are completely different industries, this is the exact playbook they used.

Kichae,

The VCs were in the same industry both times, though: Making money by selling property.

They’re not interested in selling do-dads, or softwhizzles. They want to sell the company, and that’s making the same play in the same game every time.

thejml,

While I agree, their decision dissolved one of them. They picked the up and coming product over the one activity making money, burned through the capital and the new product never made it to market.

millie,

So keep control of your own indie and don’t do shared ownership. Check.

DdCno1,

Easier said than done if you are not independently wealthy and can bring your own capital with you.

It’s also a shame People Make Games lost the plot on telling that story, too. The worst thing you can do is push this false equivalency on what is obviously a rich-people-fuck-over-the-poors story.

Thassodar,

Hey it worked for Konami right? RIGHT??
