P34C0CK, do games w The PlayStation 2

Despite it being the weakest of its generation

Huh?

SSUPII,

It has the weakest hardware of its generation. During those years you had the Sega Dreamcast, Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo Gamecube. All this consoles had a more powerful hardware than the Sony Playstation 2

MrScottyTay,

And the PS2 was also reportedly the hardest to work with, especially early on in its life before the tools had matured. It proliferated purely on the install base (partly thanks to the DVD playback)

jeffw, do games w The PlayStation 2
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

In terms of games, Kingdom Hearts and Guitar Hero were highlights of my childhood.

I thought the Dreamcast had the weakest technical specs of that generation? PS2 was also earlier than other consoles in that generation, so slightly lower specs makes sense.

MamboGator,
@MamboGator@lemmy.world avatar

Dreamcast was killed off so early and didn’t run alongside the others for most of the generation, so a lot of people consider it as more of an in-between system. Maybe not to someone who actually owned one, but given how poorly it sold the majority probably didn’t.

MrScottyTay,

Guitar hero for me was a 360 thing. I’ve always wanted to go back and try out the PS2 ones though, just not had the hardware.

Caffeinated_Capybara, do gaming w Why do mobile games suck nowadays?

I think it’s because most people play mobile games as a way to pass time, rather than to do something actually engaging. So, people don’t typically want to buy mobile games upfront, meaning devs gotta monetize in some other way, like p2w microtransactions.

julianh, do gaming w Interactive Loading Screens - High Hell

They’re not interactive but Spec Ops: The Line’s loading screens stick out to be. They start out as pretty standard tips and lore info, but then starts giving you stuff like the definition of ptsd, a fun fact about increasing suicide rates in the military, or just telling you you’re not a good person. Occasionally the normal loading screen is entirely replaced with a ghostly image.

Kissaki,

That sounds like great game design. Using the loading screen as an extension of the game direction and concepts, adding to it.

kbin_space_program, (edited ) do gaming w Why do mobile games suck nowadays?

Fdroid app store has a lot of frankly amazing indie games.

Pirate freecell Solitaire. is fantastic.

Also, Warframe has an iOS version(not a port), is working on an android version, and its now fully crossplay compatible.

Kissaki,

Pirate freecell is fantastic.

There doesn’t seem to be a Pirate freecell. Do you mean Pirate Solitaire?

Custom variant of the Free-Cell solitaire with pirate themed cards in pixel art.

kbin_space_program,

Yeah that's what i meant.

collapse_already, do gaming w Maybe hot take: as a handheld, the regular switch is an awful handheld

The Joycons were an absolute disaster and ruined the portable experience. I got 4 of them repaired. When they inevitably broke again, I gave up and bought a pro controller. Precariously balancing the Switch on your lap or setting it on furniture so you can use a pro controller is not a handheld. Still had lots of fun with the games on it, but the experience should have been better. Nintendo has building controllers for decades, you would think they could at least begin to approach competency.

AVincentInSpace, do gaming w What is your favourite game console?

Nintendo 3DS. Extremely hackable, not too shabby selection of games, and… I swear I must be the only person on Earth who likes the 3D feature, but I love the 3D feature

GammaGames, do gaming w What is your favourite game console?

If I had to pick all time? 3DS! It has sooo many games with supporting the DS and 3DS library, DSiWare, and of course homebrew.

If I’m picking my current favorite I’ve got to go with the Playdate. It’s portable and has a lot of fun small-scale games.

(yes I like handholds why do you ask)

sleepybisexual,

The 3ds is a damn good system. I just hate the n3ds cstick

GammaGames,

I never had a n3ds! Couldn’t bear parting with my animal crossing poptart edition

stardust, do gaming w Maybe hot take: as a handheld, the regular switch is an awful handheld

Caused me hand pains playing handheld with the switch that it became absolutely necessary for me to get grips to make it usable. Terrible ergonomics.

sleepybisexual,

Yea, I keep mine in my dock. My 8 euro aliexpress controller works better than the joycons ever did

dogslayeggs, do games w I just learned an interesting piece of gaming history that most people might not know about. (Xbox Live Arcade on original Xbox)

I had the original Xbox with Live to play with friends, and I played XBLA on the 360; but I didn’t know about the Arcade function on the original. I don’t remember hearing any of my gaming friends talk about it, either.

june, do gaming w Taboo Question

Sims 4 and Minecraft play just fine. My ex wife played Sims 4 without issue on her 2012 MacBook Pro without a problem for years.

NewNewAccount, do games w The Sega Saturn

Sega Lord X has a fantastic video about what went wrong and hypothetical fixes that may have saved the console.

Haus, do gaming w Why are there two different genres both called ARPG?
@Haus@kbin.social avatar

I've spent a lot of time in RPGs, and the last time I RPed in a G was around the time George Bush's dad was president.

DmMacniel,

Gaming in the Bush Senior Years.

Grangle1, do games w Which game series had the worst anniversary celebration?

Fire Emblem delayed their 30th anniversary game by two years. It sat, completed, on the shelf with no real proper explanation as to why. Instead they did a temporary release of the original 8-bit version of the first Fire Emblem on the eShop, when a superior version in essentially every way is available on the DS. If all they were going to do was release an original game on the eShop, the least they could have done was do a worldwide release of one of the games in the series that’s still stuck in Japan. Then the actual anniversary game (Engage) finally released two years later, and… it’s mid. Not bad, especially gameplay wise, but held back by a laughably cartoonish story, especially compared to its predecessor Three Houses. The mobile game Heroes has some better stories than Engage.

Ok_imagination, do gaming w I just got a Playdate!

That’s… Odd to say the least. 8 hours active battery life doesn’t sound great and it seems kinda gimmicky in general. Can someone sell me on it? When would I want to play this?

Carighan, (edited )
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

It is quite a gimmick, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing tbh. Its neat if you’re a hobbyist dev in particular to expand the way you think about input vs in game design so that when faced with things such as analog triggers, gyro controls or touch surfaces you got a better intuitive thought process.

I will however say that to me, the main use ends there. A neat gimmick in particular for gamedevs.

insomniac_lemon,

Does it even have touch capability? Though I could see the logic if there is some way to develop in a way that allows easily exporting to both the Playdate and Android.

Also I'd say a lot of those features are easier had with a Steam controller (or perhaps other gamepad). Granted they are not sold anymore, but I got one in the fire sale and likely a lot of people did as well due to being dirt cheap (PC Gamer says 48 million, 10% of sessions).

I was originally going to reply to @essell on agreement on cost, but the only real substance was

  1. It's not really for me for a lot of reasons (I don't need portability, I don't like buying things generally+use what I have)
  2. I haven't worked my way up to real creation yet (due to a lot of problems) but my desired aesthetic is more like these things I've made animated 2D eye (note:imgur links only work if opened in a private window for me) or 3D plant with only vertex colors.
chunkystyles,

8 hours active battery life doesn’t sound good?

Sounds like a lot, to me.

TheSambassador,

It’s not a full dedicated gaming console that you’re spending hours and hours playing. It’s a toy that’s great for quick sessions and it’s really fun to develop games for. It’s very well made and the software is great.

It’s not a fair comparison to existing handhelds. It’s niche, and definitely not for everyone. Personally, I love it and think it’s just a unique toy that’s fun to show people. If you’d need to get X hours of gameplay to make it “worth” it to you, it probably isn’t your style.
