How about autoscrolling shmups where you don’t die after every hit and get to upgrade your ship between missions?

The oldschool entry in this niche would be Tyrian – released in 1995, made freeware in 2004, then ported to modern OSes.

2004 was also when Jets’N’Guns came out. It looks more modern, has a quirky sense of humor and a badass metal soundtrack. It also has a sequel.

Both games can be found on your (PC) digital marketplace of choice.

Shmup: R-Type Delta, but you really can’t go wrong with any of them.

Run ‘n Gun: Gunstar Heroes, love the weapon power up system and its co-op.

h3mlocke,

Man I played the shit out of gunstar heroes back in the day, it really is a good one

Okay, just finished Chants of Sennaar. That was a lovely experience. Reminded me a bit of my time a few months ago with Jusant, along with a touch of Journey and Heaven’s Vault thrown in.

Had to laugh out loud when I ended up playing a fucking mechanical crank handle version of Flappy Bird. That was pretty entertaining.

One puzzle completely stumped me, but some kind soul on the Steam forums (!!) had a really good explanation without giving away the actual answer to the puzzle, which I always appreciate.

Anyway, highly recommend for anyone who likes puzzle games, environmental and organic storytelling, languages and written script, and just an examination of history, culture, and how (ideally) we can all connect if we just listen to one another and find shared interests (there’s a particular interest that almost every culture in the game shares, which is something a lot of people IRL bond over as well; I found it pretty interesting because it felt so… quintessentially human).

What to play next? No idea. I think I’m done with intense action games for a while, so might find something else relatively chill to play.

kariunai,

I played and enjoyed Chants of Sennaar and Jusant in the last few months. A recent standout game for me was Tunic. Check it out, it might suit you well as much as it did me. It has fighting but if you want you can enable easier combat or even “no fail mode” (invulnerability) from the menu. The game has a ton of hidden secrets and puzzles while being pretty and friendly to look at like the other two games. It is a great experience with or without the combat parts.

comicallycluttered,

Hah, I was actually considering Tunic! But I’m also a little mentally burned out, so I think I need to be in a bit of a different headspace, otherwise I’m going to ignore some of the more interesting parts like the little secrets and slowly revealing the instruction manual and all that curiosity-rewarding stuff.

It’s definitely on my “to play relatively soon” list, though, and thanks for the suggestion!

Stovetop, do games w If you've done the Final Fantasy marathon did you include FF XI? Was it worth it?

I have been in the process of doing the marathon slowly but surely over the past year and a half.

I play XIV when I can and I enjoy it, but hardly have time for one MMO, much less a second one. I decided that trying to do XI was too big an ask, so I opted to replace it with Tactics (the PSP War of the Lions version specifically).

Tactics is a much-praised game that, despite not being numbered, is considered part of Final Fantasy’s core identity (and comes up a lot in XIV), and it provides a nice tie-in to 12, both being Ivalice games, so I thought it worked well.

The only difficult part is that there is no PC port of Tactics. I had to emulate it. Though I do know that there are iOS/Android ports of it which may work better for some.

Stellar Blade. Everything about it is good except the voice acting. Combat, exploration, visuals, music all very good. 👍

How far Ninja theory has come.

From a fun, but full of offensive stereotypes, in Kung Fu Chaos, to the fuck you of video games, DMC Devil May Cry, to finally this.

I really hope the puzzles are less shit and distracting than in the first one. Lost all interest because of them.

VaultBoyNewVegas,

I finished the first one only last week. I almost dropped it over the puzzles especially the finding runes in the environment one. That one broke the momentum of the narrative/plot for me as you’d be going through an area and you’ve the narration going on or you’ve just been through a big action sequence and now you’ve hit a wall until the puzzle is solved. So I’m in no rush to play this one, I did think the last third was great though and definitely less repetitive.

I do agree that a lot of the find-the-symbols puzzles felt like an afterthought, but overall they didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the game. The story and presentation were fantastic and I thought the blind trial was extremely well done and one of my favourite video game levels.

Not sure if many will join me on it, but with Microsoft going on the death march for studios, this might be the first of their major releases I don’t even bother with on Game Pass. After all, they fired Tango Gameworks, who knows when they’ll cut these devs loose.

Of the ones I’ve played, Elden Ring. The biggest aid for new players being that if something’s too tough, you just go somewhere easier and come back later. The opening area has a boss roaming a field designed to teach you exactly that lesson.

steal_your_face,
@steal_your_face@lemmy.ml avatar

I’ve also heard the magic in Elden ring makes it easier than the others. Any thoughts on that?

bungle_in_the_jungle,

I hate other souls like games but managed my way through Elden Ring because of this and what /u/ampersandrew said about going away and coming back after exploring and leveling a bit more.

steal_your_face,
@steal_your_face@lemmy.ml avatar

Cool. How’d you like it?

bungle_in_the_jungle,

I had a great time with it (mostly) but I don’t want to play it again… If that makes any sense? Ha ha.

msage,

It’s too big. Simple as that.

luciferofastora,

Doesn’t linking users work differently here? I thought @ampersandrew would be the canonical way to mention users, given that it includes their instance. I’m still fairly new to Lemmy, so maybe that’s app/instance-specific

bungle_in_the_jungle,

Oh yeah, my bad. Did that completely on autopilot!

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

The magic is similar to Dark Souls 3. I don’t know that it’s any more overtuned or anything, but there’s a lot of fun in finding broken builds, and there are tons of them.

ZombiFrancis,

It is the most wizarding friendly game FromSoftware has made.

Through their other games the pattern was for wizards: the level getting to the boss was tough managing your spell uses, but then the boss was easy if you reserved enough.

In Elden Ring there are less ‘levels’ and almost none of the classic ‘runback’ to a boss if you die. So you almost always can full power a boss.

Which feels easier in comparison. Though the Elden Ring bosses were designed around that more.

Imminent DLC will shake things up too.

Piemanding,

I liked the magic in Elden Ring. First Souls game I played magic in and I feel it was very strong. If you’re going with sorceries, just be aware that the first magic teacher is easily missed. Look up where they are if you get too far into the game without finding more magic.

Demon’s Souls isn’t available on PC, but it is the original Soulslike game. Your best bet is to start with Dark Souls 1. They’re not necessarily easy, but it is the origin to an entire genre, so I feel like those may be a better intro to Soulslike. Also, Elden Ring is too demanding - unless you have a good rig, in that case, you can pick that first. For a gothic vibe, you can go with Bloodbourne.

steal_your_face,
@steal_your_face@lemmy.ml avatar

I primarily game on the steam deck and I think Elden ring is one of the top played games so I’m sure it works well on that.

velox_vulnus,
@velox_vulnus@lemmy.ml avatar

From the posts out there, it looks like the game runs somewhere in the 30-40fps range, so the game is playable, but definitely not in the 60fps range. You may or may not like the frame-rate inconsistency, and it requires some sort of tweaking here and there.

Burghler,

You could try dark souls 3 for the closest to eldenring experience while being 60fps. Then go onto eldenring or dark souls remastered. Dark souls 2 is a black sheep that plays and feels different to the rest and has all around wild design choices.

toastus,

Elden Ring runs just fine on my Deck, but it drains my battery pretty fast.

But I have a refurbished non OLED deck so ymmv.

There’s a game called Heart & Slash which is very charming and has a soulslike streak to it. It’s quite hard to beat in totality but it’s enough fun that you don’t mind clawing your way to the end.

If you have a PS4/5, Bloodborne has the most simplified mechanics of the From Software Souls style games.
