Look into snapRAID. It does parity based data protection (up to 6 I believe). It’s free, opensource. I use it to run a nightly sync and scrub of ~3% of my total disk space, so in a month it scrubs everything to protect against bit rot. It then shoots me a nightly email with any errors or issues it detects. There is a learning curve, but I’m happy to provide some basic scripts for you to get it running in Windows. You can also run it on top of pooling solution such as Drivepool.

I’ll look into this. I appreciate it. Probably down the road ill set up True NAS or set up some sort of thing with ZFS but have to kinda get more acquainted with all the programs and stuff associated with their use.

Here is some basic info en.wikipedia.org/…/Pirated_movie_release_types

As someone has said it pretty much goes [Title][Year][Resolution][Source][Codec(s)-Video/Audio][GroupName]

Title and Year: self explanatory

[Resolution]: 1080p, 2160p, HD, UHD, etc

[Source] Bluray, Webrip, Web-DL, Streaming-Provider, Cam, etc…

[Codec]: This can be a lot but kinda depends on what the uploader wants to mention/bring attention to

         Video: x264 (AVC) or h264, x265(HEVC) or h265, AV1,  x266 (VVC), etc...

         May also include stuff like : 8bit (SDR), 10bit (HDR), DV (Dolby), Hybrid

         Audio: # of channels (5.1, 7.1)

                     Codecs: Will tell you if the audio is lossless vs lossy

                     Examples DTS:X, TrueHD Atmos, DTS-HD MA, TrueHD, LPCM, FLAC [lossless] vs. DTS-HD HR, E-AC3, DTS-ES, DTS, AC3 [lossy]]

Group Name: Name of group or person that made the file.

Finally there is the container file which nowadays is MKV (Matroska Video file) but you can run into MP4. There are older formats but you don’t see them very often so I wont really mention them.

This is a quick run down but there is plenty of info out there that goes more into detail and you can just google questions like: what is lossless vs lossy?

Hope this helps

Skimmer, do piracy w Proton VPN. How good is it?

Proton VPN is probably one of the best VPNs out there. Has open source clients, is based in Switzerland so under their strong jurisdiction for privacy and data protection, doesn’t keep logs or sell data, has good speeds, includes useful features, etc. I’d definitely recommend it, as well as Proton’s other products.

counselwolf,

yeah it was, thanks. I thought this wasn’t it last time I checked, but looking at videos again (now with sound), I’m certain this is it. Thanks!!

counselwolf,

another thing that kind of threw me off was that I remember the 3rd-person view was a lot closer than from the videos I’ve watched. Like it was 3rd-person but the camera was like a feet or two above the person. The videos of the game was like the camera is placed on a ceiling.

Well done! That’s impressive you were able to figure out the game.

httpjames, do piracy w Having a hard time settling on a VPN
@httpjames@sh.itjust.works avatar

Windscribe is a really good all in one option with fully featured clients across several platforms.

AirVPN is great when paired with your own clients, like Wireguard or Passepartout, and you want to take advantage of its indefinite port forwarding. The clients aren’t user friendly.

LazyKoala,

What do you mean “when paired with your own clients”?

I just subscribed to AirVPN and while basic, their Eddie client is… serviceable :D

kostel_thecreed,

Basically saying you download either Wireguard or OpenVPN (from their official websites) and download a config from airvpn, then load that config into either WG or OpenVPN depending on what you got.

DonnieDarkmode,

Good to know about AirVPN. I don’t have a ton of knowledge when it comes to networking, so I would appreciate something that’s simpler to configure and run

spez,

its indefinite port forwarding

No longer true for new user/new account at the moment. New account gets limited 5 ports. And to point out, technically it’s 20 ports for old users, not indefinite.

httpjames,
@httpjames@sh.itjust.works avatar

I meant indefinite as in time. Ports remain for as long as you have an active subscription.

spez,

Ah right, I misunderstood sorry.

Had no idea they limit new users to 5 ports now. I only singed up a couple months ago, guess I got in just in the nick of time!

chemsed, do pcgaming w Just got my first entry level gaming pc! i have about 30 bucks to spend, what should i get for it?

Here are my recommandations on what is better on PC because of the advantage of mouse and keyboard vs controller by genre:

Strategy: the first thing I wanted to do when I bought my PC is to play Age of Empire 2 and Starcraft 2 and they still are the top games of the genre. It’s night and day compared to their console games like Halo Wars. I recommend also the Civilisation series.

Simulators: Cities Skylines and Microsoft flight simulator are fun games and nothing looks like it on console.

MOBA: AFAIK, MOBAs like DOTA 2 and League of Legends only exist on PC because it’s unplayable on controller. I don’t like these kinds of games, but it’s still something that you won’t find on console.

FPS: A mouse let you have better control on your aim, but it’s less relevant in games with crossplay multiplayer where the aim assist on controller is strong like in Apex Legends and Halo Infinite. Recently, a lot of people enjoy Battlebit.

Awall,

Although Cities Skylines is the goat city builder it’s not the cheapest game in the world with all of the DLC which adds a huge amount to the game. I’d definitely wait it out with CS2 right on the horizon. If you can get the first game on a wicked sale it’s still worth it but CS2 is looking amazing!

DARbarian, do piracy w Proton VPN. How good is it?
@DARbarian@artemis.camp avatar

According to r/VPNTorrents, Proton and AirVPN are the only recommended VPNs since they are the only well-established privacy-respecting ones left. New ones are popping up with promise, like Azire, but time will tell. As for Proton, I decided against it because of limited port forwarding and lack of IPv6 compatibility and settled on AirVPN. Also, I personally try to avoid keeping all my eggs in a single corporation's basket, so I cannot advise buying into the full Proton suite if you're remotely tech savvy and/or privacy-concerned. But they are genuinely great products if you have no desire to do any tinkering or shopping around. I just can't see the appeal in my VPN activities being directly tied to my email. Oh and I almost forgot, I switched from PIA due to their lack of IPv6 support and acquistion by Kape, a known adware company.

DARbarian,
@DARbarian@artemis.camp avatar

PS: AirVPN, in my opinion, is the last great VPN. Open-source, run by activists, anonymous accounts, crypto purchasing, IPv6 compatibility, full port forwarding, great support, Tor integration, the list goes on.

sadreality,

Mullvad no longer useful due to no port forwarding?

DARbarian,
@DARbarian@artemis.camp avatar

Well, to put it one way, Mullvad is almost definitely the best VPN that doesn't offer port forwarding. Which, in reality, may only be absolutely crucial for torrenting.

Mothra,

How noob/non tech savy friendly would you say it is?

missveeronica,

My Proton email is just a fallback and privacy based activities. Nothing nefarious, just stuff I’d prefer to keep off Google’s servers.

DARbarian,

Ah makes sense then. Proton is my main until I get around to self-hosted email.
