GARlactic, do gaming w Maybe hot take: as a handheld, the regular switch is an awful handheld

I completely agree that the switch is genuinely painful to hold on handheld mode for more than ten minutes. The controllers and buttons are too small, it’s flat, and generally not ergonomic. It’s definitely designed for child sized hands in mind and not adults. I do my best to avoid using it in handheld mode.

Meanwhile, my steam deck is a much superior design. The ergonomics are excellent, it fits my hands, the buttons are spaced apart well, and are adequately sized, and I can play for hours with no hand cramps.

However…

The switch absolutely trounces the deck on portability. The fact that it’s flat and small means that, even while in a case, it’s extremely easy to slip into a backpack and take on the go. The deck while in a case, however, is bulky and doesn’t fit in a backpack if I want to put anything else in there (like a book and my laptop).

They were each designed with different goals in mind. I hate the ergonomics of the switch, but really do appreciate how easy it is to take on the go. I love the ergonomics of the deck, but hate how cumbersome it is to take anywhere. Nintendo made the choice to sacrifice ergonomics, and valve made the choice to sacrifice portability. Unfortunately, no solution will be perfect, and I accept that.

sleepybisexual,

Good point, tho my switch only left my house like once for a smash tourney

Megaman_EXE, do gaming w Maybe hot take: as a handheld, the regular switch is an awful handheld

I find I very rarely use it as a handheld. I find it kind of heavy and awkward to hold after longer periods of time. I kinda wish Nintendo made another 3ds, lol. I’m extremely curious about what they’re going to do for the switch successor

grrgyle,

I’d go even farther back - make another GBA

sleepybisexual,

I want both a new GBA and a new 3ds.

grrgyle,

I think maybe I just want a GBA

Which is probably currently available if I look around

sleepybisexual,

I want a GBA, but the money to get one is not worth it.

A GBA is not worth 100 euros to me.

grrgyle,

That’s true, especially since I don’t have any of the old physical games.

I might get one of those “retro handhelds” (rg351p, PowKiddy, etc) one day. Those at least seem much more reasonable, and probably sport more open architecture

sleepybisexual,

I’m big into those, you want some recommendations?

grrgyle,

Hell yes!! I would love that. I’m definitely looking for something lofi - like even playing SNES games would probably be overkill. Bonus points if it can play contemporary retro games, like for PICO-8

sleepybisexual,

OK, so yih looking for something that can do SNES well, that would be low power, unless you wanna have newer systems,

So I need answers for these 4 questions

What shape you want?

What budget?

How much power do you want!

What os do you want?

For SNES the cheaper end will work

grrgyle,
  1. Smaller the better, not wide like a Switch or Stream Deck.
  2. Under 200 CAD, but flexible for the right device
  3. Limited 3D but no more. Like FX chip level
  4. Linux? Hopefully I understood the question

Thanks for taking this time!

sleepybisexual,

OK, I have some ideas.

For all of SNES and some other stuff as a bonus the ambernic rg35xxh seems like it’d be a good fit. Tho it is horizontal. About 80-90 USD I think

The rg35xx is similar but vertical with no sticks

For something that’s like 40 USD ish there’s the powkiddy v90.

Tho for 200 cad that’s like mid range tier. But most powerful ones are landscape.

A good yt channel is retro game corps.

My personal machine is the retroid pocket 4 pro. An android handheld that is very powerful, can emulate up to some switch

grrgyle,

Oh the different retroid pockets look really cool. Thanks, you’ve given me a lot to dig in to!

sleepybisexual,

Didn’t think you’d like a retroid cos they run android but they are extremely good.

The 4 pro is good, it runs a lot well, up to 2d switch games.

I heard horror stories about the 3 and flip tho.

Also powkiddy stuff is bad at mid range, only consider them for very cheap,

Megaman_EXE,

That would be really interesting. Heck I would even just take people making more games with the gba’s restrictions. I’ve always thought it’s super interesting. As developers get used to working with a console or system, we end up rolling into the next generation. So they don’t really get to flex their skill as much as I think they probably could.

I sometimes wonder what we would see if older consoles had another 7 years of life added to them. I try not to think about it too hard or I get kinda sad about the games we’ll never see lol

Megaman_EXE, do gaming w Why do mobile games suck nowadays?

I was wondering this recently, too. The two mobile games I miss most are tiny wings and the original fruit Ninja. But I remember playing Infinity Blade and other random games on my iPad touch that were really good back in 2010

I came across buried bornes 2, and it’s been ok so far. I have no idea if it has microtransactions or ads yet. It claims it does, but I’ve yet to see them. It’s not the best game I’ve played, but the concept is kinda interesting if you use your imagination a bit.

dmegatool,
@dmegatool@lemmy.ca avatar

I just installed Tiny Wings this week. It’s available on iOS. On Android there’s a clone named Dragon, fly!

Megaman_EXE,

Yeahhh that’s the main issue for me. I’ve stuck with android for the past decade. I didn’t know about dragon fly! It’s not as cute but it’s going to do the trick. Thank you!

noob_dragon, do gaming w Maybe hot take: as a handheld, the regular switch is an awful handheld

Yeah, it is basically impossible for me to use the stock switch for anything more than an hour handheld with my hands cramping up. I ended up having to get some rubber grips with a palm bumpout in order for it to be remotely comfortable.

The steam deck is a huge upgrade in that regard. Significantly more comfortable to hold. Plus, the steam deck is capable of emulating pretty much anything on the switch full speed :). On top of all of that is barely even costs more lol.

N64 for me, I’ll always remember my first all-nighter playing Super Mario 64 on Christmas.

Sneptaur, do gaming w What is your favourite game console?
@Sneptaur@pawb.social avatar

It’s not dumb at all, no need to downplay your passion. Loud and proud I say!!

My favorite is the PS3. Something about its design and library just speaks to me.

stardust,

PS3 is my favorite too. I love that era of gaming. I emulated some I missed out on like Asura’s Wrath, Shadows of the Damned, and Lollipop Chainsaw and they really hold up well still with the art style chosen being more cartoon than realiatic for its time. And I’ve hopped in for short sessions in Red Dead Redemption.

Sneptaur,
@Sneptaur@pawb.social avatar

I actually picked up a ps3 slim and a decent handful of physical games. You can still buy digital ps3 games too on the console itself

Rentlar, do gaming w Maybe hot take: as a handheld, the regular switch is an awful handheld

Back in the day I was drifting in Mario Kart DS on the Dpad until my thumbs hurt before the Wii version (with Nunchuk) and later.

The switch was fine, of course in handheld mode its inferior to the larger/heavier, newer and more ergonomically designed Steam Deck. These days at my friends house I bring a Pro controller around which works and feels just fine.

Oh and yeah the best Switch gaming experience is via emulation of the games you own and using nicer controllers.

sleepybisexual,

Yea. Wish I could emualate some of the nicer switch games. But my retroid shits itself on star allies, 3houses would make it blow up

secret300, do gaming w Maybe hot take: as a handheld, the regular switch is an awful handheld

I honestly wish for a vita sized steam deck. I love the PS vita 1000. It was small and portable but thick enough to hold. Still would be uncomfortable after many hours but honestly that just means it’s time to take a break

Elkenders,

GPD Win 4?

erwan,

The problem is that the Steam Deck plays PC games, that were designed for a big screen. You can’t make the screen much smaller than the current Deck while keeping it legible.

d3Xt3r, do gaming w A personal argument for a benefit of gaming

That’s incredible. Your son has far, far, more patience than I ever did. I still haven’t managed to clock most of the games I grew up with, such as Dangerous Dave, Prince of Persia 1 & 2, Wolf3D, Doom 1 & 2, Crystal Caves, Aladdin, Lion King, Jazz Jackrabbit, Mario (NES), Pokemon Red (GBA), Crash Bandicoot (PS1)…

Every now and then I try to clock one of those old games, but then I get stuck and/or lose interest, and move on to something else. Even among recent games, I spent over 400 hours playing BotW and only managed to do two of the divine beasts. I also have over 200 hours in TotK and still haven’t gotten to the first major spirit quest. Similarly, got several hundreds of hours in Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, but never actually completed any of those games.

I think the only game that I recall beating would be the Bio Menace trilogy - which I finally managed to complete as an adult, and that too thanks to DOSBox’s save states. Oh, and Diablo II too, it someone had the perfect mix of action + story + game length, to keep me interested till the end.

Honestly I’ve no idea how people manage to stick to one thing for so long and see it thru till the end, without losing interest or getting distracted by something else.

BurningnnTree, do gaming w Mariokart 8 Sucks.

They need to bring back the thing where you move the control stick left and right during drift to build up boost

t3rmit3, (edited ) do gaming w Why are there two different genres both called ARPG?

ARPGs should be the Diablo-likes. Half the time, Souls-likes are barely even RPGs.

Diablo-likes have skill trees, classes, leveling… You know, the player-customizable “role” part of Role-playing.

Souls-likes often are just action games of dodging and equipment stats, without any ability to change the intrinsic role of a character.

Just finished Chants of Sennaar. Great game, highly recommend for people who liked Outer Wilds or Return of the Obra Dinn.

Now I’m trying out the new RimWorld Anomaly expansion.

ISOmorph,

Oh man that game is such a hidden gem. The art style is gorgeous and the puzzles are really organic and make you feel like you’re getting smarter.

I’ve been ripping my hair out trying to get through Nodecore, a game for Minetest. It’s basically minecraft but without an inventory menu and in-world crafting. You can’t punch a tree down, but you can tear down the leaves and put together some branches to make an adze, which you can drop gravel on to cleave through one (1) log from a tree, which you can then carve with the adze to make planks, and then tool heads – it goes on like that.

So far I’ve discovered stone-tipped tools and how to melt singular items like sand. I’m trying to figure out how to do concrete in such a way that isn’t mindbogglingly tedious, and I still have to figure out how to find metal - torches don’t last forever, you see, so spelunking is an expensive and time-consuming task. If you delve too deep without proper preparations, you’re proper stuck in the dark. Subterranean pits can be save enders.

ConstableJelly,

May I ask what the appeal is to that over just the base game?

HipsterTenZero,
@HipsterTenZero@dormi.zone avatar

Its kind of like a puzzle game. You’re given hints as to what you can do, its just a matter of figuring out how to actually do it. At the endgame, there are machines you can put together that I presume automate a lot of the more tedious labors. I don’t actually know if that’s true though, its just what I’ve seen in screenshots. There’s a wiki, but its woefully incomplete.

ConstableJelly,

Interesting. Uncharted territory!

otp, do games w The Sega Dreamcast

I loved the Dreamcast. It was a great console that was ahead of its time in so many ways.

The problem was, that despite being a lot, it was too little too late.

Sega was trying to run after shooting itself in both feet with its failures (particularly in the West) with the Saturn and the 32X.

Son_of_dad, do games w The Sega Dreamcast

The Dreamcast ended itself because it had no pirating protections. You could literally copy games and play the copies on your console. I’m not against pirating, but the dreamcast’s own fans killed it, by copying all the games instead of buying them. Support your game devs, pirate old games

tuckerm,

I've heard this argument before, but I'm not sure that the numbers support it. Despite the Dreamcast having a head start, the PS2 started eclipsing the DC's sales almost immediately, and that's even with the PS2 having some supply problems early on.

If piracy was the main problem, I would expect to see huge system sales and small game sales. Instead, the DC just didn't sell very well outside of its initial launch.

I'm not saying piracy didn't exist, but Sega had lost so much support from customers and developers with the 32X, Sega CD, and Saturn, I suspect those are more to blame. They'd have been able to handle the problem of game copying better if they didn't have a dozen other problems at the same time. Heck, it was the first console with built-in online services, and that's the industry's main way of dealing with piracy now.

B0NK3RS,
@B0NK3RS@lemmy.world avatar

It wasn’t really an issue while the console was still alive though, at least not until very near the end at least. It would have became a massive issue if the console continued though.

Son_of_dad,

My PC gaming friends get mad cause they have gotten less attention from game devs recently and games don’t release on PC as much anymore, it’s cause 35% of PC gamers pirate games, so it’s no surprise that companies aren’t rushing to that market. Pirate old games all you want, but if you pirate new games, you don’t get to complain about the game companies not catering to you
