Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Had all the individual makings of an exceptional game (with input from Todd Macfarlane, R A Salvatore and Grant Kirkhope), and while it was definitely enjoyable enough - it lacked any wow-factor whatsoever, winding up an otherwise forgettable 7/10.

callouscomic,

At the time of its release, it’s wow factor for me was simply some fucking color, compared to PS3 Skyrim which had released mere months earlier.

I love both games, but there’s something about Amalur that I think I love more that I can only think of as it being just medium, average, mediocre but not bad. It’s just something kinda fun. Comfortable.

thatKamGuy,

Oh no doubt, my (vague) memories of it are definitely in vivid bright colours.

I originally got it as I was looking for a single player World of Warcraft-like experience, and I did play through a significant portion of the main story - but eventually went back to WoW as it didn’t quite scratch that itch enough.

I probably should revisit it sometime in the near future - hopefully on the Steam Deck (haven’t checked compatibility).

sexual_tomato,

The main thing I remember about this game is that it was financed by the fortune of a former MLB baseball player, independent of any game studio.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Sort of. Their funding was also tied up in the state of Rhode Island. Reckoning was purchased by 38 Studios, who were making a Kingdoms of Amalur MMORPG, and then the game was made to be in the same universe. The MMO burned through cash and never released, and the sunken studio brought Reckoning’s developer down with it.

thatKamGuy,

Yes, it was developed by Curt Shilling’s 38 Studios - but it was actually largely financed by the state of Rhode Island, and the studio ended up defaulting on payments!

Honestly, the story of the game’s development was more interesting than the story within the game itself!

Rai,

7/10 to me is a good game. I hate how people rate games. I’ve always hated it. A 6/10 game is enjoyable. A 5/10 game is absolutely mid. A 4/10 game is okay. 3/10 has huge flaws but is worth playing if you’re into that.

Subnautica is an 8/10 game for me. I thought it was amazing. I loved it. Below Zero was a 6/10 game. I thought it was good. I enjoyed it, and I would not call it “absolute mid.”

thatKamGuy,

In a world where games are scored across a full spectrum 0-or-1 to 10, then yes - anything 4-6 would be considered middle of the road.

However, due to a number of factors - that’s unfortunately not the reality we find ourselves in.

Firstly, “mid” is hard to define as it can mean anything from ‘mediocre’ to ‘fine, but forgettable’.

Secondly, ratings/scores tend to skew upward as people tend to reserve 1s for outright scams, broken games and review bombs. With 2 & 3 often used for ‘asset flips’ and similar non-games - so we end up grading on a curve from 4-10.

This also works well for mainstream outlets as it keeps advertisers happy, due to arbitrarily inflated scores.

Lastly, in a world of cumulative media (new releases don’t cause older ones to stop existing) - even ostensibly good games will fall by the wayside as players have access to 10/10 titles from previous years.

So all things considered, a 7/10 is well and truly “mid” in this topsy-turvey IGN-eque world

The incredible adventures of Van Helsing. Decent rpg with loot but was fairly imbalanced among character classes. The real winner was the mini tower defense games in it and the spinoff tower defense game, imo.

In my opinion ( haven’t played or really seen the DLCs, so I’m just talking about base game ), Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Definitely had ups and downs when I did my only playthrough. Absolutely middle of the road compared to the official games ( completed gen 3, part way through gens 4-7 ) I have played and still even middle of the road compared to some of the fan games I’ve played over the years.

If you’re an adult Pokemon fan, these days fan-mades or rom hacks are the way to go. Nintendo/The Pokemon Company/Game Freak are pretty damn risk averse with this property, so the really cool stuff comes from fans (at least until they get the cease and desist).

Rai,

Pokemon ScarVio were horrrrible. Unplayable for me.

Started my first playthrough of Sekiro and it’s really hard. I’m slowly embracing the playstyle, but I have so many habits to break from the other Souls games. I like it, but I don’t think I’ll be up for NG+ if I ever finish the NG run.

Also started playing Sable and I really like it so far. It kind of feels like an open world Zelda type of game without combat. It’s quite relaxing, and the art style is absolutely beautiful.

jjjalljs,

Sekiro is one of my favorites. I like that it’s not really about leveling, and it pretty much gets right into it. I could pick it up today and blast through a new game.

Do you know how to do the lightning reversal? There are a handful of bosses that it really counters.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Do you know how to do the lightning reversal?

I think so in theory. I acquired it, but haven’t found anyone using lightning yet. LB to parry/absorb, RB to unleash it?

Have not made it past Genichiro phase 1 yet so I went elsewhere looking for powerups. I beat Juzou first try, but the long arm centipede man took hours, a lot like every other boss and mini boss lol.

mohab,

I think Juzou and Genichiro is where I stopped. Game's offense is so boring I realized I'll have much more fun if I replay Ninja Gaiden 2 again, so I went and did that instead.

jjjalljs,

You have to jump when you’re doing it, too. if you touch the ground before it finishes, it won’t work and you’ll just get shocked.

If you clear some post-game optional challenges, there’s a special move you can unlock that does it easier, but that’s only useful if you want to do NG+

Hours on the centipede man, you say? Once you get into the deflect rhythm, they’re very satisfying. Fill their posture right up and then finish them. But without the timing, you’re going to take a lot of chip damage or get posture broken yourself :(

chloyster,

I had a similar experience and didn’t think I would do ng+ but still pretty much immediately started it and did another playthrough lol

Primarily Titan Fall 2. Been wanting to try it for a bit now and it really exceeds my expectations. Love the movement, shooting, and feel of everything. Only thing I really don't enjoy is the titan sections but outside of that it kind of rules.

GammaGames,

The Titan sections in TF|2 confused me, half of them were basic arenas and the other half were basic arenas with bosses. I played a lot of Titanfall 1 and when I would play aggressively I’d go entire matches without losing my titan, it felt more like Gundam Doom. I think it’s because they actually balanced the sequel

Anyway the campaign is fantastic, so creative and always keeps it interesting. The mech sections aren’t even bad, some of their levels are beautiful and there are some good arenas, they just weren’t what I expected

I just looked it up, and I’m surprised to say that Spider-Man 2 (just released on PC back in February I believe) is still only $60. I mean, sure it’s over a year old from it’s original PS5 release, but the fact they’re not asking $80 for it is kinda nice.

And Oblivion Remastered is “only” $50.

Gradually_Adjusting,
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

$50 today is equivalent to about $28.50 19 years ago. So it’s effectively half price lmao

Zahille7,

I meant it’s “‘only’ $50” because it’s an entire overhaul of the original game, rebuilt from the ground up. Similar to how Skyblivion is gonna be.

Like, that’s a damn good price for one of the best RPGs ever made, with the amount of work that went into it this time around too. I’m not complaining about paying that for such a great game.

Prunebutt, (edited )

Clair Obscur (a gorgeous, new game) is 50 bucks. I rest my case.

Zahille7,

I mean sure, plenty of new games can still look great and be relatively affordable. Nowhere in my comments did I say otherwise, or even imply it.

I really feel like people are jumping on these comments because I dared to say a couple recent games aren’t selling at $80.

jjjalljs, (edited )

Oblivion? One of the best RPGs ever made? This is a joke, right? It’s not even the best Bethesda game.

Psythik,

The PS5 version was actually ported to PC a full year before the official PC release by a bunch of Brazilians. In many ways with was even better than the official release. Only downside is that it didn’t have ray tracing. But if you don’t care about that then it was worth playing.

Of course this has nothing to do with your point, just saying.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

People only ever talk about Final Fantasy Tactics and dismiss any of the other games. However, going by the original release, Tactics Advance is by far my favorite. It’s my favorite GBA game and at least in my Top 25 JRPGs, despite having played almost nothing else for the past 20 years. I like many of the things the game gets criticized for.

Endymion_Mallorn,

Marche and the general lesson of FFTA are great, to me. I love the strategic map mechanics. And honestly, I think the Laws (except in the cases where they're intended to be screwy) are neat additions that make you have to think.

frank,

I loved FFTA and have replayed it multiple times. I’ve played FFTA2 some as well, which was definitely not as good.

I thought A was much better than the original. I didn’t even know it was “not good”

De_Narm,

Usually, whenever people talk about A, you get a few of the following arguments:

  • The story is bad/too childish
  • Laws/Judges are overall a terrible mechanic
  • Learning skills from equipment is bad
  • SRPGs need permadeath
  • Send missions are bad and just there to promote the game with having 300 missions

Of course, I disagree with all of these. Actually, these are some of my favorite things about this game.

frank,

Yeah I don’t see those are negative honestly. The send missions inflated the numbers and I don’t love that you can get locked out of stuff easily but it’s totally fine

ICastFist,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

I personally dislike the skills from equipment because, compared to FFT, it creates an artificial, story-gated wall on character progression (you can’t get the most powerful magic because you can’t get the equipment, because it only unlocks later during the story)

As for the judges, I don’t think they add enough to game to make combat more interesting

Joining the future zombies in abusing Mewt is the fastest way to get past the tutorial.

pinball_wizard, (edited )

And that’s critical, because it’s one of the longest tutorials in game history (because it’s so slow).

I’ve ganged up on Newt every time, after my first playthrough. Poor kid.

Endymion_Mallorn,
@Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Yep. It's terrifying when you really put together the story with that being part of what Marche does - but he escaped being made into a zombie (which is such a great piece of foreshadowing).

datavoid,

Probably my favourite gameboy game across all generations

joenforcer,

FFTA is great if you never played FFT. If you did, however, it is a cheap imitation that turns it into “baby’s first SRPG”.

FFTA2 did a better job, but those of us that started with FFT were highly disappointed with FFTA as a “sequel”.

De_Narm,

Funnily enough, I really didn’t like FFT. The only thing I could get behind was the story. However, I’m planning on giving the remaster another shot.

ICastFist,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

I really hope square doesn’t fuck up the remaster like they did with the PSP and Android versions, both shipped with a stupid bug that caused a huge slowdown on every magic-like animation.

FFTA is great but a hidden gem, I don’t think it counts. It’s weird though because I have never met anyone who has played all lf FFT, FFTA, and FFTA2, but I know a lot of people who love either FFT or FFTA

De_Narm,

I’ve played them all! Although, I haven’t finished all of them. I’m planning on fixing that with the FFT remaster, however, I had to drop the original release.

Personally, it goes FFTA > FFTA2 > FFT. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who likes FFTA2 the most.

Enter the Matrix, I loved the slowmo effects and the fights, the first hallway scene felt like it was straight from the movie. Using the computer terminal to unlock stuff felt magical. Only later I learned that Path of Neo was supposed to be a better Matrix game while Enter the Matrix was universally panned.
