It’s definitely not the fastest but it’s really close.

The fastest full shutdown currently belongs to The Culling 2 which only lasted 2 days between launch and being closed completely.

The Day Before is another big example of a game that lasted an incredibly short time but despite that game lasting 4 days before no longer being sold, the games servers stayed on much longer than that meaning that it was shut down after Concord despite being cancelled before it.

Why did culling 2 fail? Wasn’t the first game pretty big?

Including joke reviews, the game had a 16% rating and was so poorly made that within those 2 days it killed the popularity of both Culling games extremely quickly.

The first game was popular because it was a twist on the genre while the 2nd one was a quickly thrown together (almost exact) clone of DayZ.

The word scam was thrown around a lot in those 2 days.

Sounds like the first was made with the mindset of, “it would be cool to make a game that does x, let’s do that and see if it will make money” while the second one was more of a, “all we gotta do is make a game that does x and we’ll make a ton of money!”

I think there are two core issues. Their creation engine has struggled to keep pace since the PS4 era and Todd’s ego.

The engine part can be fixed by either licensing something else or investing big time to bring that fossil up to speed.

With Todd’s ego, I hope Starfield thought him a lesson or they make someone else top dog.

As far as I know no engine out there is able to do what the creation engine can, and that is having world spaces with tons of persistent dynamic objects. If they would switch to another engine they would loose one of their core elements of the game, the possibility to take all the junk that is laying around in the world or to add things literally wherever the player wants. But this feature comes with the price that the world spaces have to be comparted in cells which are separate by loading screens. This can be minimized with streaming and dynamic data transfers but this has its limits too, even more so on resources constraint systems like consoles.

I’m still curious to see, if the Microsoft leadership pushes them to do that, especially with the more recent titles being duds, but in general, I don’t expect them to do it, because:

  1. As others said, mods and community remakes like OpenMW, Skywind, Skyblivion etc. reduce the value that an official remake would have. They would need to deliver something much better, otherwise they’ll get ridiculed.
  2. They don’t have an amazing story or anything like that, where there’s a strong argument for playing an old title rather than a new title.
  3. Their engine hasn’t made that many amazing advances since Oblivion. To make things look better, they’d pretty much need to update all the textures, which is a lot of work.

Go play Fallout London. It’s a bitch to install and has more bugs than an ant colony but it’s the best Fallout since New Vegas imo. Even in it’s rough around the edges state you can tell it is a love letter to Fallout and is so good its canon for me regardless of what the will of Todd may ultimately decide.

If you have any issues installing the game and getting it stable please reach out to me. There was also a nearly gamebreaking issue with semi auto rifle damage being grossly under calculated that I can help with as well. If Fallout 3 and NV are your favorite games you really should play it and that goes for anyone else who stumbles on this comment. It’s just so good.

There have definitely been times that copying other people worked out well.

Fortnite and Apex copied the BR trend when PUBG wasn’t satisfying everyone’s needs. The former even lazily reskinned a zombie defense game for the battle royale approach. Lots of games reskin the theme of Dark Souls and do okay.

Even if it’s lazy or uninventive, once in a while one of those reskins has a particular element of the concept it reinvents in a much better way. Seems Concord never came up with any such ideas, which could have been great since many people are currently tired of Overwatch specifically.

Those aren’t re-skins though, they just used the battle royals game type as their main game type.

I can’t really think of a similar game to fortnite before it in regards to the combination of building and competitive shooter, although I’m sure someone can point out an early example, and Apex is smashing together counterstrike and maybe overwatch or something similar for the gameplay.

Personally I don’t think apex would have worked if it just looked like a re-skin but its got a lot of great artwork and the level designs are interesting at least to me.

Also fortnite has become the everything game, they have Lego and rocket racing and a guitar hero minigame, its sort of gone wild IMO.

You could build up your base (also a defense map) pretty freely, but it was never unlimited resources creative. You’re right to be confused by this comment

Save The World isn’t sandbox or everything and was the only launch mode for the game. It had more mobile gacha practices than anything tbh. I get thinking that seeing as it has taken cues from Roblox, but it isn’t reality

There have been a number of voxel shooter that have shipped lowkey since Minecraft that attempted to add block placement to the team v team ticket shooter, e.g. Ace of Spades.

Remaking them in the same tired-ass engine would only make them worse and it’s not likely they will ever give up their Frankenstein’s monster of GameBryo in favor of something that isn’t a pile of dogshit.

The last few re-releases of Skyrim where they updated some visual features and added new content (most of which they didn’t make) is as close to a remaster or remake they will actually do.

    I’ve known about this for a while. Sadly, I don’t think it’ll ever be finished. Even if it is, Skyrim is an extremely old engine and looks like crap, runs like crap. I modded the hell out of it with 4k graphics on an RTX 4070… It’s just awful. The engine isn’t great. They need to make something new. Even Starfield had the same old ass dated engine.

    Most of the work is done and they are aiming to release next year, at this point I’d be surprised if it doesn’t get done.

    In any case, this is a project that a lot of people have been working on, for free, for over a decade, I wouldn’t tell them it will look like crap even if I really thought so.

    What does “4k graphics” even mean? Did you just install 4k textures for everything or what? Either way, you can get modded Skyrim to look very beautiful, without being insanely demanding. I guess it depends on your resolution, but a 4070 should be able to manage it just fine, so I’m not sure what you did.

    Me and my kid played it for a little while earlier and it’s so good in it’s simplicity. I can’t wait to go back and play more. But it also me instantly wonder why Sony haven’t got Asobi to do a new Ape Escape.

    I was thinking that as I played, too. I was joyful.

    So many games these days are so heavy it’s so refreshing to have a game that’s happy as hell. I love RE2s and Elden Rings but effff they’re stressful/hard and sometimes feel like work. It is so refreshing to punch out a giant gorilla with my rocket dog friend while there’s some upbeat music playing.

    Also who doesn’t love some great Halloween stages?

    I’d like to see that data. I’d be surprised if it exists, companies rarely release that level of detail on their finances.

    And “evil” is a very strong word. We’re talking about video games, a luxury recreational product.

    Countless games have had successful remakes, and crazy profits.

    The vast majority of remakes, even the bigger budget ones tend to be of smaller games. Games that are easier to recreate or port. Bethesda games are huge, and it’d need to be ported to another engine and redo everything from voice acting to the open world visuals. Even if they’ll bother with all that, I don’t think there’s a demand to remake Bethesda’s older, clunkier games.

    Voice acting has been good enough in the past few decades that it’s usually usable without re-recording. Maybe remastering at most.

    There’s also plenty of tooling to upscale textures too, even without AI. The biggest hurdle (for assets, at least) is 3D models. You can slap a subdivision modifier on them to make them higher-poly, but you’d still have to make sure the UVs didn’t get messed up (or whatever it is that they’re using these days). And also verify that nothing weird happened like new geometry hiding or showing something in-game. (Collision probably doesn’t need to change if you’re just increasing polycount.)

    The problem with difficulties is that it’s much more difficult to design an AI system which you can tweak and make it smarter or dumber as opposed to just increasing damage and health values, so devs will just implement the best AI they can and leave difficulties as afterthought.

    After playing a lot of games that don’t even have difficulty settings, I’ve started to believe in the idea that difficulty selection is just outdated game design and that having a single difficulty but optional areas/content that is more difficult is the way to do it. OSRS is one of my favorite examples - everyone plays the same game and going through levelling or whatever isn’t mechanically demanding. However, there are bosses and challenges (like Theatre of Blood which is an end-game raid or Inferno which is an end-game challenge) that are incredibly challenging and require weeks if not months of attempts to master and finally beat, but also are perfectly skippable and most casual players don’t even bother with them.

    I’d like more games to be like FromSoft games. The difficulty is adjusted by what gear you have and what spells you use. None of that turning bosses into bullet sponges nonsense.

    Yeah, Sekiro has a pretty adaptive way of making the game harder, if you start a replay and get rid of the charm item, you can’t almost parry, it has to be precise, and if you ring the demon bell everything gets higher life and damage, but drops much better loot.

    Sekiro was the only one that actually respected players time. Players bitched endlessly it was too hard.

    If fromsoft actually gave a shit they’d add in adjustable parry windows and iframes and that works cover 90% of the people who weren’t good enough from sekiro. They won’t because they love to be gatekeepers.

    Leveling is a normal thing in any game. You level up in most games.

    Also you don’t need to level up in most FromSoft games. The bosses usually have a gimmick or movement patterns that are easy to learn.

    Sounds like you just suck at the games. No shame in that but don’t say something is harder than it is.

    I’ve beaten every day since 2 in addition to sekiro, the actual hard game. We’re talking about easing the game for the average population. So yeah if you are in the top .5% of players fromsoft gives a fuck about your time.

    For everyone else your talking somewhere between 50 and 200. I mean for fucks sake for years the advice for hitting a wall in DS was explore and come back at a higher level.

    Modern world of Warcraft has less leveling these days 🤦‍♂️

    Yeah, but the point is that you aren’t just grinding levels. You literally said it yourself, you go explore a different area, you play more of the game (not just grind the same part of the game)

    That’s not at all surprising. PvE game design is almost always about making the computer less competent in fun and/or believable ways. If you’ve got a computer that can simulate every item and skill in an enemy team’s arsenal and game out the best combination in milliseconds, the player is going to be dead by Turn 1 or stun-locked and dead by Turn 2.

    I’ve been immensely impressed with DOS2 AI. If an enemy is sleeping, another enemy will use part of its turn to hit the enemy to wake it up. There were several instances where I paused and just stared awestruck

    AI will also save up abilities with side effects until armor or magic resistance has been depleted. Such as knockdown on a battering ram ability.

    but there’s so many other ways to change difficulty.

    change number of enemies and where they spawn change gear and abilities, the Witcher did that one with how the stamina system worked. it didn’t drain on the lower difficulties. horizon zero dawn made everything in the shops more expensive and made the enemies drop less money. honestly, that one also sucked. only served to make the game grindier.

    point is, there’s other options.

    I had fun with Zero Dawn but came out with a list of minor improvements that would make the game significantly better. Forbidden West had almost all the same problems, and added several more besides. The game really started to lose me when I was trying to upgrade a particular piece of equipment and just had to keep doing laps up and down a goddamn mountain with no nearby quick travel location, hoping that an elite version of an enemy would spawn, then laboriously killing it in the hopes that a particular resource would drop, only to get disappointed by the RNG and have to repeat the process, because that was the only place where that resource could be got, and that was the only place where that enemy would spawn.

    The grind was appalling, and it took what was a moderately interesting fight the first couple of times and turned it into a monotonous chore.

    Also the upgrade barely turned out to be worth the effort.

    I finished the game more out of spite than anything else, and I did not purchase the DLC, nor do I have any plans of getting any sequels. Damn shame, because there’s an awful lot about both games to like.

    Have you played Morrowind? Best Elder Scrolls game by far, in my opinion.

    And so hard to play, so yeah.

    Not gonna happen. It’s a lot of work, and they’d rather spend it making new games (for legitimate reasons).

    I think you want Roots of Pacha.

    Contribution is a currency used in Roots of Pacha. When the player donates food or supplies to the clan, contribution points are awarded as acknowledgement of their efforts.

    Contribution points must be expended to develop ideas. Certain clan members have items for trade in exchange for points, as well.

    Items are donated by placing them in the contribution bin, found just north of the bonfire. Donated items may be viewed and retrieved until the end of the day. The value of the contributions is tallied overnight and the bin is emptied for the next day.

    It’s not just a rename of money, it’s more like your social renown in the village, like how much people respect you because of your contributions, and you use it mostly to choose what improvement project you want to build next in the village.
