Moderation exists to identify and exclude people who are being absolute cocks.

You don’t need any grand philosophical statement about values. You don’t need to defend the paradox of tolerance against absolutist demands for unrestricted expression. It’s perfectly fine to say: you were doing some diet Nazi shit, that’s awful, fuck off.

clay_pidgin, (edited ) w MechWarrior 5: Clans Stomping to PC, PlayStation and Xbox in 2024 from Piranha Games

It was bound to happen, given how the timeline advancement worked in MW5:Mercs. The story covered the Third and Fourth Succession Wars (2866-3025 and 3028-3030), the typical starting point for Battletech before the lore, politics, and tech get too complicated. The Clan Invasion (3049-3052) is the most iconic part of the timeline, I think.

I live to talk about Battletech, so hmu if you’ve got questions!

Sarna.net is the very good wiki for the BT universe.

clay_pidgin,

They are indeed, to a degree, though it basically never comes up. There is an illustration of a Pleasure Circus in the A Time of War RPG companion book with a catgirl. I screenshotted my copy of the PDF here.

HidingCat,

So, how's the storyline like after the FedCom civil war? I haven't been following on BattleTech since.

clay_pidgin, (edited )

Oh man, that’s when I cut out too, early 2000s. I came back in the last few years and saw that Catalyst had really restored the franchise.

3067 Word of Blake (boo, hiss) takes over Terra and starts the Jihad. COMStar fails to take Terra back.

WoB attacked Luthien, Tharkad, New Avalon. Outreach gets nuked. Pretty much everyone takes advantage to attack their old rivals.

Clan Ghost Bear evacuates the whole clan, Touman and workers, to their Inner Sphere holdings in the FRR.

Tons of the characters you know get killed.

3080s Devlin Stone shows up Deus ex Machina and kicks out the Wobbies. He founds the Republic of the Sphere.

Maps change, some clans change names or merge with the IS. (Nova Cats, Ghost Bears, Snow Ravens, Sea Fox (neé Diamond Shark))

Peace!

clay_pidgin,

3132 Devlin Stone retires, and then still-unknown forces break the HPG network across the Sphere, and things fall apart. This is where the old Dark Age books and Clickey-tech minis come in when WizKids took over the license from FASA and did a time jump. Since then, Catalyst took over and is still filling in the gaps.

War starts again. The Draconis Combine invades FedSuns. Wolves and Jade Falcons attack Tharkad. Alaric Ward becomes Khan of Wolf. And somehow, Devlin Stone Returned.

The Republic of the Sphere has a still-unexplained bullshit technology called The Wall that blocks jump ships from entering their space.

3151 Wolves under Alaric Ward and Falcons under Malvina Hazen figure out how to get last The Wall and race towards Terra to defeat the remnants of Republic of the Sphere. An ilClan is declared, fulfilling the goal of the original Clan Invasion.

That’s where we are.

Your main sourcebooks are Era Report:3145, then Shattered Fortress, and lastly IlClan.

Tagger, w Fables creator places Wolf Among Us universe in public domain amid clash with DC over Telltale adaptation

anyone know of anywhere I can legally down load them now then?

kae,

That’s not how this works.

You’re free to create stories, video, of your own video game in the universe. If you chose to make that public domain and give it away for free, then good on you.

Others can create freely in this universe with their own expression, which they could charge for.

Much like how there are movies about Cinderella or Red Riding Hood which are under copyright, but the base story itself is in the public domain and free to use.

Tagger,

Right, that makes sense! Thanks!

What an awesome thing for him to do but I can’t pretend I’m not slightly disappointed to have a huge series of free comics to dive into.

clay_pidgin,

I recommend the Overdrive app. sign up (in the app, even!) for a library card (doesn’t necessarily need to be to your local library) and start checking the books out!

Tagger,

Thanks

clay_pidgin,

You betcha. I recommend it to people all the time.

jayandp,

It’s called Libby now, but still great advice.

clay_pidgin,

Oh right, thanks.

bpm,

Always worth checking if there’s more libraries you’re eligible for, for the best selection - I’ve got a card through my local library, one from the next town over (I just need to visit once a year to renew), and a town in California (Sunnyvale) that gives library accounts to anyone who applies. Some libraries will do digital-only accounts for like $20/Year, so that could be worth looking into if your local library doesn’t support Overdrive/Libby.

PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

The Wold Among Us universe is public domain. Not the mainline Fables universe.

gabereal,

incorrect.

As of now, 15 September 2023, the comic book property called Fables, including all related Fables spin-offs and characters, is now in the public domain. What was once wholly owned by Bill Willingham is now owned by everyone, for all time.

520,

You're misunderstanding what's happened.

The author has relinquished his copyright on the Fables universe. Every work based on it has its own copyright, however.

So while you can make your own stories in the Fables universe, it doesn't mean that things like The Wolf Among Us game from Telltale have had their copyrights affected in any way.

nimmo, w Ubisoft Montreal's mandatory return-to-office order reportedly leaves staff in "turmoil"
@nimmo@lem.nimmog.uk avatar

I find it quite interesting that Ubisoft Montreal chose the same day as my employer to enforce 2 days in the office every week.

I’ll accept that there is a 1 in 356.25 chance that any employer will pick a specific day to enforce a return to office, but it does seem interesting that there would be 2 employers in different countries picking the same day. Is there something special about that day that makes it a special day to change where and how people work? (I know that there were events on 2001 that took place on this day, but that doesn’t seem too likely a reason to pick that particular day to enact this change)

Dienervent,

It's a monday. So that's already more like 1 in 52. There's been like 5-20 news worthy "return to work" announcements in the past year, I'm guessing half othem have mandatory 2 days, the other half have mandatory 3 days.

Multiply that by the number of things that happen in your life where a coincidence of this level could happen and you should be seeing this kind of coincidence a many times each year.

    !deleted4231 avatar

Absolutely none of that makes any sense to me. What does it (likely) mean for the people who are going to be buying one of these?

    geosoco,

basically it just means it's using newer chip-making processes to make the chip smaller and faster. It's sort of a no-brainer that a new chip would use some updated processes and likely run faster than one made 7 or 8 years ago.

    NOT_RICK,
    @NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

Smaller chips are a combination of faster and more power efficient than chips of a larger process size. The smaller the chips the less electrical impedance there is. That’s what makes processors hot. Less heat means less energy wasted and more potential to run the processor at a faster rate

    dudewitbow, (edited )

its meant for people in the tech space that can cross compare numbers with on the market devices. some basic specs give you a ball park estimation of what you kind of expect. Albeit, this is from WCCFTech, which theyll post just about any rumor, so take with huge grain of salt.

for laymans, ill do some of the cross comparison now.

5nm is the fabrication process used in AMDs current top end gpus, and current generation GPUs. In apple terms, same process used on its A14/A15 (iPhone 12-14) and M1/M2 (all current macbook devices) chips (only difference between the two generations is bleeding edge vs matured process, but they are effectively the same size).

For comparisons sake, the 5nm process is used by Nvidia’s current generation RTX 4000 series gpus, but a special process for it (cusotmized basically for Nvidia). The clocks likely refer to CPU clocks so I will drop discussion of gpus here and move onto Nvidia’s CPU offerings.

Nvidia essentially only puts CPUs on its enterprise and developer parts (the Tegra line, which is how the Switch ended up using it). Nvidias “Thor” would be the only device using 5nm, but little is known about Thor so I would refer to last gen Orin, which have development boards already on the market (in the same way the Tegra X1 in the switch also has Development boards on the market).

Orins Wikipedia section on pure numbers, the 2 middle SKUS, the 2 NX models are the ones that would likely go into a switch due to their TDP (10-25W), as 10W is the typical handheld TDP and 15-25 tends to be the TDP of devices when “Docked”. Since last gen orin was capable of holding 2.2 Ghz CPU docked, then the switch SOC at least on paper, is closer to the full clocks when compared to the older Tegra X1 in the switch (which had it clocked to 1000 Ghz essentially, which is almost half of what the chip was designed for ~1800 which is seen in the commercially available Nvidia Shield TV). The CPU is a Arm Cortex A78, so I’d compare it to phones using it such as phones using the Snapdragon 888 cpu, but downclocked. Also forgot to put out there, Orins GPU is essentially similar to the Nvidia RTX 2050 mobile if you need some remote idea on how it would perform graphically.

    Opinion post starts here:

Im on the boat who believes Nvidia is going to use Orin (or a varient of Orin just shrunk down to 5nm, as Orin is a 8nm product) as Nvidia does not like to do custom designs for any customer. It’s the reason why Apple for instance, dropped nvidia and the last Nvidia GPU used in an apple product i believe was the GTX 670. The choice sounds like a very Nintendo thing to do, because 1. Nintendo has a history of choosing the lower end part nowadays and 2. Nintendo prefers to have their consoles sold at profit and not at a loss, so theyre more inclined to pick the cheaper device of any option. Given that Orin is an early covid design, it makes sense of the timeline as it would kinda be similar to the switch (the Switch launched in 2017, used the Tegra X1 which was in devices in 2015). Orin was produced early 2022, and the next Switch would likely launch in 2024

    sugar_in_your_tea,

Nothing until they actually announce something. Rumors aren’t to be trusted at all, Nintendo has a history of disappointing on specs and making up for it with interesting gameplay.

    derin, w Unity's self-combustion engine

Unity is mad that mobile game companies acquire millions of users in a few months as they transition from soft launch to global, and then sell their companies for millions - if not billions - of dollars.

They want a cut of that pie, and in true unity fashion, they chose the most inept way of doing that.

If you have developers of games like Cult of the Lamb feeling scared, you did it wrong.

You protect your indies, you protect the people making art with your product. The people who invested 3 million and are making billions in the mobile ads game? That’s your target.

How they could be this inept is astounding…

Also, I’ll echo the other commenter’s statement in saying the article is very well written. They just weren’t able to really answer the “why” portion very well. scope of modern AAA video games is unsustainable

Helpful hint, it's not just video game programming. Those hijacked gas pipelines in the US, unsecured SCADA systems weren't because every sysadmin was falling asleep, it's because nobody pulling the trigger wanted to listen to the sysadmins screaming that blindly deploying shit without audits, was a bad idea.

In pretty much every single technological failure, there's usually a common thread. Someone did (or forgot to do something) in the name of profit.

    ConsistentAlgae,

    Sysadmin - can confirm.

Have a VP wanting to ram a newly acquired Europe entity through a migration and I am just yelling in every meeting about regulations. No one gives a shit so I’m just making them sign everything they say. CYA in full deployment.

    TheDarkKnight,

On the acquired side, currently going through integration. We had a looking date to cutover a major portion of our systems and it was absolutely only a fail forward situation if it went south. Surprisingly, they recognized and listened to us saying it wasn’t ready and needed more time…got us six more months but definitely a rare moment from my experience in IT. Hopefully a sign that the new company knows what they are doing.

    elbarto777,

I can side with what you’re saying, but I don’t understand how forgetting something in the name of profit in other industries has anything to do with the pace of game development.

    ConsistentAlgae,

It fails downwards. And I know that doesn’t make sense but when you push something through as fast as possible everything below it falters.

QA is garbage, QC is garbage, development becomes garbage because of those fast timelines because something has to be cut. You can’t do everything you need to do with shorter timelines - and that’s where it becomes “in the name of profit”.

    elbarto777,

You’re describing the state of application/game development, yes.

But again, what was that rant involving other industries about?

    ConsistentAlgae, (edited )

Just that it’s fairly similar across other industries. It’s a pretty common thread in most industries when people try to force things through without planning properly.

Also I wasn’t ranting about other industries, just making a note that it occurs everywhere. Profit for profit sake has made a lot of industries worse, including the gaming industry.

Edit: do you think QA/QC and development work only occurs in the gaming industry?

    PenguinTD,

Many modern AAA games has become glorified toilet paper rolls. They tried to keep manufacture then in hopes to milk everything possible, then when you are at the end of roll they hype and sell you a new one. Make them feel like you absolutely have to play the next installment to get a closure or something new branching out.(prequel/sequel/reboot/timelines/etc.)

It was unsustainable at the pace and amount pre-covid, unhealthy for hardcore gamers as well. We have to actively not buying and playing new games cause I can play certain amount per day/week.

With covid and post covid, I actually finished more games compare to before. Well, the extra 2 hours not needed to commute I can do whatever I wanted.
