I assume that the PS5 Pro is great for its target audience: people who care about getting the best possible graphics on a console. They bought it, they tried it, they loved it, and they praised it. The issue with the PS5 Pro is that not everyone fits into that niche. For people who are not playing on giant 4K TVs, what is the benefit? What does it provide that a regular PS5 (or even a PS4) does not? Sony has not provided an answer, from what I have seen.

You’re not wrong. A 4070ti or a new 5000 series Nvidia costs twice as much as a PS5 pro alone. And not many PCs can have Ray tracing at 60fps on 4k for under $500
I understand that not everyone has the expertise, but for 800$ you can put together a very capable system that will beat the PS5 easily. It will probably include some used parts. You don’t need a 4070 in there, not even remotely close.

Not really. To have games in 4k and 30fps in modern games you need a gpu that is more than half the budget. And you dont even have a cpu, ram, mobo or even case.

Unless I misunderstood something, the PS5 isn’t “true 4k”, but uses upscaling just like any semi-modern GPU can do as well (DLSS and FSR I think is the AMD version). That changes that equation quite a bit.
I would argue that reocmmending a PC over a (new) console has gotten easier, especially for someone on a budget. Because you can actually get an incredibly competent machine these days (used of course). Even if you decide to pay more to get a better PC, you then have access to the vast PC library with all the bundles, frequent and often deep sales, giveaways, … The cost of the console isn’t just the console, but also what you can play on it and what it costs, and this aspect has improved massively on PC in recent years (and was already pretty good before then).
Of course, if you’re interested in exlusives or first-party titles (like nintendo), or you generally play mostly AAA games, the console might just be the better or only option, but you better bring the wallet for the whole journey.

The ps5 pro gpu is equivalent to a rx 7700 xt, which is a 400 msrp card. In reality its way more, but lets work with msrp prices to give this the best chance of success.

Cpu is equivalent to a ryzen 7 3700x, which is an old cpu so is cheap atm, 120$.

I found a board on amazon for 65$, which was the ASRock A520M-HDV. 120$ left.
Ok so, ssd. Ps5 pro comes with a 2TB ssd. I found some sketchy, offbrand, m.2 ssd’s from brands i never even heard off for 94$. There is probably cheaper, but amazon’s website was being an arse and lets face it, how trustworthy or slow are those. 36$ left in budget.
Thats 36 for ram, case and psu… As much as i hate to admit it, as a pc person, you cant make a pc with equal strength as ps5 pro and it sucks arse.

I will agree that yes, with pc you have a lot more options and its easier to put in a bit more into the budget to build a way better pc than a ps5 pro.
But from a pure budget standpoint, no pc isnt worth it.

You kinda missed most of my points. Because a core advantage of building a PC from individual parts is that you can buy some parts used, or adjust them to what you actually need. You can’t buy the PS5 used cause it just came out, but the components are actually relatively old.
A case can be had for cheap (often with fans). Also a used GPU might allow you to get a bit more performance for the same money (or the same perf for less money). Keep in mind that the hardware specs of the PS5 aren’t exactly cutting edge top tier performance. You can also find a complete used PC with roughly the right specs, and a quick check showed an eBay listing for case+PSU+mobo+3700x+16gb and 512gb nvme + 2tb HDD for 309€. And that was the first hit, with “buy it now”, after 30s on the site.
You can also tailor what exactly you buy to your needs. Maybe 1TB nvme is enough for you, or you can even start out with 500gb. It’s a PC, just buy another m.2 when you really need it, takes 5 minutes to install.
But all that is kinda not the point either. Mainly the advantage is that it’s a PC. It’s not just a gaming thing (though it can be). That is what makes it worth it, also obviously depending on the individual needs. And that’s the point. The PC does what you need, and can be made to change to whatever that is.
When you said “from a pure budget standpoint, no PC isn’t worth it” you also one again COMPLETELY IGNORE that you need to buy games to play. Those are so much more expensive (and have a much more limited selection) on console. And over the lifetime of the console, game costs will have been much more than the device. That’s the point, and why they are relatively affordable, they are subsidized by the manufacturer who makes money on every game bought for it. When a console comes out, they typically loose money on it.
Finally, once a few years have gone by, you can actually upgrade PC parts individually where needed. You don’t have to buy the next generation new one, like with consoles. Again, much cheaper. For people who are on tight budget, this is or should be a huge consideration. Once you got a PC, the next upgrade is so much cheaper than a new console, yet it’ll be equivalent to that new console.
Consoles are cheaper the day you buy them (and not by a lot). Even just weeks or months later the PC is cheaper. Years later it’s cheaper by a lot.
I wouldn't really call it a "trap". If you're buying a console when it's new at full price, sure, you're being taken for a ride, but give it a couple of years for stuff to be cheaper and it can work out reasonably well.
I used to be a major PC gamer but eventually the cost/benefit calculation went completely off the rails.
That said, I've not upgraded to the current console generation because I'm still waiting on something to justify it.
It’s surprising how well the Steam Deck plays new games and how much support has been added to older games for something with a form factor similar to the Switch and a price point that is lower than most computers or consoles with similar capabilities. It’s a big change to the cost/benefit calculation.

After my PS3 got the YLOD, I considered about purchasing a PS4, and then I thought: I would have to start from zero since it doesn’t have backwards compatibility. So, I went back to PC and my whole catalogue was there waiting for me. They are indeed a trap.
$700, but I agree that this was a stupid product. If instead, they introduced the slim at $350 and the pro at $500, these things would be hard to find on store shelves.
Sony sucks, using your money to try and buy exclusives is toxic garbage behavior, they deserve any criticism and troubles they come across.
I understand that exclusivity on games can be shit but if, I remember well lots of PlayStation games are already on PC (spider man, last of us and ghost of Tsushima) and steller blade will be soon too.

Microsoft has been way worse than Sony. Zenimax alone was might have been bigger than Sony’s entire portfolio depending on how you measure. Activision-Blizzard was far, far bigger. And at least with Zenimax, it seems like most of their studios have gotten worse since acquisition, with a lot of them being shut down.
I don’t mean to overly defenf Sony, but just paying publishers for 1 year of exclusivity seems pretty mild in comparison. I’d prefer they didn’t buy studios like Bungie, but at the same time the acquisitions of Naughty Dog and Insomniac seem to have worked out pretty well.

Monolithsoft was three separate offices- Nintendo bought two of them, which were both already working exclusively as a Nintendo second party, and the third was dissolved during the Bandai-Namco merger due to the fact that Namco was treating them like shit after Nakamura retired and the merger was the last straw. Monolithsoft is one, if not the only, exception to Nintendo staying out of buying companies, and Iwata has even commented on it only happening because Sigiuira basically asked them to, and it not being something they want or like to do.
As for Bayonettas since 2, Nintendo’s publishing it for PlatinumGames, who used to be a Nintendo second party. They started working with Sega in 2008 iirc because Nintendo literally pointed Sega their way (This is the same time period when Nintendo was giving Sega work to try to dig them out of their hole, e.g. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games). My understanding is that internally Nintendo still considers PlatinumGames a second party dev, despite Sega publishing several games for them.
You can decide if those are exceptional cases or something as bad as Sony, but I know where my vote lies.

That’s been rumored for years. I remember back in the day seeing rumors about Halo coming to PlayStation.
Not entirely without merit. Minecraft has been released on pretty much everything with a CPU, although some of those may have been before Microsoft purchased Mojang. There were a lot of weird scenarios after the Zenimax and Activision-Blizzard where the now-Microsoft-owned studios had pre-existing contracts with Sony they needed to honor. It looks like some of the IP they recently purchased that had traditionally been multiplat might remain that way, like the “Age of ___” series, Doom, and Call of Duty.
I’ve seen rumors that Starfield might come to PS5, but nothing substantial. I don’t think there would have been any chance of that if it had sold well on Xbox and Windows.
I’ve also seen rumors of Halo, Gears of War, and Forza, but I will not start buying those unless there are more signs that Xbox is giving up on hardware entirely. If they could get deals done to get GamePass on Playstation and Switch that might start to look more realistic though.
Most of their games are still exclusive though. Avowed just released last weekend for Xbox and Windows and no hint of a PlayStation release for example.
The reverse is also true. Sony has published MLB games for the Xbox and Switch for example.
Just as a heads up, it’s more than rumors, it’s now an active part of their strategy going forward. Exclusive games that were released previously and are worth porting generally will, to find new revenue and audience basically. Same as new releases with no PlayStation / switch (2) platforms announced yet, it’s a matter of development resources to port those, a when and not an if. (Avowed just released exclusively and south of midnight coming next month both are yet to be announced for ps5 for instance, the focus was on a good release of already announced platforms)
Recent examples: Indiana Jones will release im spring on ps5, same as age of empires 2 and mythology and forza horizon 5. The rest is coming. they’ll just try to sync it with a calendar that makes sense Seo of thieves and grounded, pentiment and high fi rush already got ported as well, I’d expect starfield and age of empires 4 to get ported for their DLC releases at the end of the year.
Look out for a big support of switch 2 from Xbox as well

Sony didn’t buy Zenimax or Activision-Blizzard. Or heck, you could point to the gigantic graveyard of studios that EA and Microsoft have purchased and shut down over the years.
Sony doesn’t really do that, not in the way that we’ve seen Microsoft do it at least. And most PlayStation exclusives are on PC now or are planned for PC.
Sony owns 14% of fromsoft and 10% of their parent company’s parent company. I bet that’s enough for them to push some shitty things but it still gives from some room to push back.
Hey I was a skeptic too but got to play it for an hour during the network test and am actually cautiously optimistic. I could still be wrong but it seemed like they put a lot of thought into the new systems.
I have also expressed doubt about nightreign in the past but am on board now. And calling elden ring part of the enshitification process is absolutely ridiculous. I dont care if you’re a “fromsoft purist”, elden ring is a phenomenal game by any metric.
I cannot wrap my head around how Elden Ring is a good game. The world is empty and dull. The bosses are copy paste. The dungeons are copy paste. It was so boring for me from beginning to end. The story was dumb. I don’t remember one character because they’re all boring and there’s no reason to give a shit about any of them. I will probably die not understanding why Elden Ring was considered good instead average at best.
I wish the Final Fantasy III 3D remake would be ported to consoles. I loved it on DS and always wanted to play it on a big screen. It came to phones, PSP, PC, and the Ouya of all things. So why the hell can’t I just play it on my Xbox? Sheesh.
(I actually considered getting an Ouya once just so I could play FF3 3D remake. Glad I didn’t.)
I really liked the story and world aesthetic but the bobblehead character design is sooo off-putting to me. Zidane always reminded me a blond Chucky doll
FF8 didn’t do it for me, mostly because the gameplay was a terribly broken mess. I loved 12, though; the story is like the love child of Final Fantasy, Game of Thrones, and Star Wars, and the gameplay felt like a logical evolution of the ATB system for a fully 3D world.
I’m so torn on the subject of a VI remake. On the one hand, it tickles my brain to think of what it would be like if given the full treatment à la VII Remake, but on the other hand I consider the game pretty much perfect as-is and don’t want it sullied.
To be fair, Intergrade and Rebirth remix some things that mean they don’t really replace the original game.
They’re doing something different with the story that we still haven’t had fully explained, which means I’m playing completely riveted to the story, with no idea what’ll happen, even though the original game has existed longer than I have.
And the gameplay is obviously completely different.
It means they’re more than “remakes”, imo. They’re more like adaptations, making changes that alter the source material to fit a new medium. Almost like going from book to TV.
And in the same way, both the “book” and the “TV Series” both remain worthy of being experienced. Different people might prefer one or the other, while others will insist the “full experience” is to engage with both. Either way, both add to the whole by existing.
