For the love of god can we get another syphon filter or ape escape??

Quetzalcutlass,

Monkey’s paw curls

Your wish has been granted. Look forward to our upcoming Syphon: Extraction, an exciting extraction shooter with none of the gameplay you remember!

Also on the docket is Ape Escape Infinity, a gacha featuring all your favorite apes and up to several minutes of gameplay. Now supports importing NFT apes, because our execs are still pushing crypto as the next big thing for some reason!

DoucheBagMcSwag,

Wow… Just… go fuck yourself man.

Tap for spoilerI hate how goddamn accurate this is

Quetzalcutlass,

I’m still salty they turned Marathon into an extraction shooter. Marathon, one of the all-time narrative greats!

Why make millions releasing games people want when you can potentially make billions by abusing addiction research to keep users playing long past the point they enjoy your game?

(I’m vaguely associated with the gaming industry. I knew things were about to go downhill when I started getting invites to lectures on retaining players and extracting money by using unethical psychological tricks - this was nearly fifteen years ago and targeted at mobile devs, but it’s long since infected the entire industry)

DoucheBagMcSwag,

It’s only Marathon in name.

Wait did you get an invite to this,?? (PocketGamer Connects - Helinski)

youtu.be/xNjI03CGkb4

This video really opened my eyes to F2P manipulation and because of this I mostly avoid it now.

Quetzalcutlass,

Not that video specifically, but the others were along the same vein. They were all completely open about how they abused psychology to get people hooked, and spoke about players using dehumanizing terms like assets or cash cows. It was disgusting how shameless they were.

DoucheBagMcSwag,

Wow and that was 15 years ago. Think of how much worse it has become now

Quetzalcutlass, (edited )

I don’t think it’s actually gotten much worse (things even got slightly better after a few countries threatened legislation for going after children), it’s just that those tactics have slowly made their way out of the mobile space (where post-installation monetization strategies are a result of users expecting mobile games to be free, or at most a couple of dollars) and into regular gaming.

A free-to-play gacha game on Android having a scummy monetization model is nothing new, but an $80 (soon to be $90) AAA game double- and triple-dipping into your wallet with paid season passes and FOMO banners and all that other junk, plus plastering ads on its menus? That’s still relatively new to consoles/PC, and putting that crap in games you paid for represents a new level of greed.

SkunkWorkz,

Yeah the only reason I’ve have bought a PS 1 to 3 was to play Metal Gear Solid. I have bought neither the 4 nor 5, since no new MGS was released on it ( I played MGSV on ps3). A modernized Syphon Filter with improved stealth gameplay would definitely make me want to buy the PS5.

gradual,

PS3 was my last console.

I stopped buying’em when they started charging for 2nd internet.

Look. I think all AAA companies should do $120 base price for all games. Piracy would have such a boom. Better platforms. many more seeders and good reviews and more freaks hell bent on cracking DRM.

Koen967, do games w Path of Exile 2's disastrous new update reveals the core tension at the heart of its design: How do you make a game with meaningful combat when everyone just wants to blast monsters?

You can go blast monsters in PoE. Why would you want PoE2 to be just another PoE?

Noodle07,

Problem is monsters in poe2 blasts you like in poe 1

Koen967,

Sure, the monsters are currently to fast and aggressive compared to the player. But that is a different point than what the article is trying to make. The fix to that isn’t taking PoE2 and making it into PoE again.

Noodle07,

Agreed

dota__2,

you mean the game they promised they would continue to support and then failed immediately on that front? this company could barely handle developing one game. lots of passion but poor planning.

p03locke,
@p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Because it’s a hack-and-slash Diablo clone. The whole point is quantity of enemies.

If you want Dark Souls, go make another game and call it something else. You can’t just make Starcraft, and then say that Starcraft 2 is going to be an FPS.

fushuan,

I’m sorry to say but until they begin updating PoE1 you really cannot blast monsters there and phrecia doesn’t count. And if you think that logging into a game without updates for a year is fun you really don’t get how the game appeals on a seasonal manner.

For now, we only have poe2. When they finally deliver the next poe1 league I won’t care as much.

Razzazzika, do games w PC gamers spend 92% of their time on older games, oh and there are apparently 908 million of us now

Well. The nature of my backlog is like I wait for games to come down in price and by the time I get to them they’re 10 years old haha.

I also have a habit of playing through the entire series before playing the newest one. I’m currently playing Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion which is the 4th game from Japan in that series but the 2nd to be released in US, SO I’m playing through it even though I don’t like it and will beat the next two games to finally play Trails in the Sky which is the one I really probably should have started with.

I do that with all my games, like Doom Eternal looks cool and so does the upcoming Dark Ages, but I went back and played Doom 1 & 2. 64, then the updated remaster of Doom 1 & 2 when that came out, and now I’m working on Doom 3. I got one more whole Doom game before I even get to Eternal.

It’s wild how good the cheap games are these days. I’m 30 hours into playing Noita, have hundreds of hours in Vampire Survivor.

And I got about 15 hours into Dragon Age: Veilguard before it occurred to me I could crack open the Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition and actually have an enjoyable experience.

tal,
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

I’m 30 hours into playing Noita

I kind of want more there. There isn’t DLC, and there aren’t clones.

I mean, yes, the game is large and very replayable, and I have a blast with it…but it’s also kind of the only option for that gameplay.

I also play it modded with health regeneration, because the difficulty level on the vanilla game is very high, and encourages very cautious play.

FlashMobOfOne,

I would suggest trying Caveblazers, as it’s similar, but it’s more barebones and (I think) significantly harder.

murmelade, do games w Best City Builder 2024: Manor Lords [as per PCGamer]

But… It’s in EA? 🤡

Dashi,

I don’t know how I feel about this game getting an award in Early Access. But it feels weird.

I have nothing against EA I played several ea games including this one, but this is getting closer and closer to the norm.

murmelade,

Yeah it seems like it will be a great game and best wishes to the Dev but it’s like giving an award to a demo. Why don’t we just give all the awards to Star Citizen then since they have promised us it will be the best everything once it releases.

EncryptKeeper, (edited )

Were there any city builders fully released in 2024? Is this a matter of an EA title being chosen because there are no non-EA titles?

Ashtear,

This is what I was wondering. Was the genre that quiet this year? Manor Lords isn’t just early access, it’s early early access. So many outright unfinished systems.

EncryptKeeper,

I can’t think of a single city builder released this year that isn’t in EA.

Dashi,

Frostpunk 2 released and is pretty solid. Maybe not for everyone but it’s a full title release I believe

EncryptKeeper,

Ah yeah that’s a good catch. It is a solid game and should have won.
