Because the previous ones were great and this one has glowing critics reviews. For me though, the system requirements are too high, so I’ll buy and play it sometime after a PC upgrade.
BL3 was just as much (if not more) of a mess - people shouldn’t be surprised, especially with Randy telling people they should be selling their souls to have the privilege of playing this game.
I played through BL3 on a 2016 PC and it was OK. Not perfect, but perfectly playable. Looking at that PC Gamer article, I don’t even understand the complaint of being unable to run the game at 120 FPS. Seems like an unreasonably high bar. I’d take 60.
If you asked me to recall the story of any of the games, I’d not be able to. I don’t think people play the games for the story. It’s just a fun looter shooter, especially in co-op, which is how I played BL3 around its Epic launch. Revisiting my technical review of the game from then, yeah, you’re right, and I documented various reports of issues, though there were quick fixes deployed or workarounds available for the biggest issues. That seems commonplace in the industry though.
Same as games like the Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk, fans playing it in release year vs 2025 are gonna have completely different experiences. And BL 3 release was also messy, albeit not as bad as this. I was there.
I mostly agree. I’d say they went uphill though, but so did every other game, but even faster. Each game improved some things, but the competition improved much more. They’ve been coasting off of name recognition ever since the first game.

Why are people taking this even remotely seriously? This is Pitchford doing marketing for BL4. BL3 already showed people don't want Epic exclusivity and there's no such thing as Steam exclusivity. They can choose to release exclusively on Steam but that's just artificial exclusivity because nothing about Steam prevents them from releasing on Epic or GOG.
It's a pointless poll made by Pitchford either to keep BL4 in the media cycle or to just shit stir, possibly both.
That's what I mean by artificial exclusivity. There are games where the developer or publisher decided it's the only platform they will release on but that kind of "exclusivity" is not at all the same as Epic paying developers or publishers to not release on Steam. Valve/Steam doesn't prevent those games being released elsewhere, the developers/publishers themselves don't want to.
I could understand smaller (I'm talking literal solo devs or studios with less than 10 people) choosing to be exclusively on Steam. Supporting other platforms can have huge overhead costs for them. But for a studio the size of Gearbox there's no benefit to being exclusively on Steam. They have enough support staff to manage multiple stores. There maybe be suits wondering if it's worth being exclusively on Epic but there are no suits sitting around wondering whether to be exclusively on Steam or not, the answer is obviously not.

It’s possible he was in a board meeting when some novice shareholder suggested “What if you take an exclusivity deal”? And he just didn’t have clear evidence on hand of that being vastly unpopular. Obviously that could be me being overgenerous to him.
There is a chance but what is he convincing them of? That they should take a non-existent exclusivity deal with Steam? They already have the data that exclusivity with Epic does not work and Steam doesn't do exclusivity deals.

The part that boggles me to this day, is that they spend the money on making a litany of insanely high quality assets and features, with seemingly no plan for how they’ll fit together.
And then they proceed to spend even more money, and time, on trying to fit it all together into something that functions like a complete system.
And that’s before you discuss their obsession with “realism”. What there is to play, is marred with balancing issues. Better ships are just… Better. Because they insist on weapons and ships functioning “logically” within the game universe, rather than in whatever way is the most fun.
Fighters beat bigger ships because equipping the same weapons, a fighter can hit every shot it takes at a slow moving giant. Meanwhile the travel-time of weapons make the fighter completely unkillable for the big ship, because the fighter can land shots from a range where its own speed allows it to dodge literally everything the big ship might send its way.
They’ve been buffing the shields and ammo counts on bigger ships, but all that does is make the fight last longer.

Two of their biggest mistakes were: one, essentially hiding the fact that the single player game Squadron 42 has taken the lions share of the development focus for the last 6+ years. This makes it appear like they just don’t know what they’re doing at all with star citizen and that’s why they’re slow (they still don’t 100% know what they’re doing).
Second, they made their sound design guy who was just interested in being a pilot and eventually learned how, to be their lead ship performance/gameplay director/developer (not sure exactly on the title name.) that has lead to the ships just not flying how people want or expect them to. That and Chris Roberts wants “WWII, star wars, type dogfights” when people want Newtonian physics, excess speed, fighting.
A special third I suppose: they need money to continue, I get that, but there is a special place in hell for their marketing team.

Kind of amazing really. I can imagine in centuries past an architect becoming the personal favourite of a king so he just keeps making the palace he’s tasked to build more and more extravagant since the king keeps giving him more money endlessly.
The money is going to salaries, so it’s basically just extended development. They’re all working and doing something. It’s basically just instead of releasing a game 6 years ago that was barebones and okay they’re making the sequel and won’t release the final game until they’re well done.
I’m confident it will release eventually, maybe another 5-8 years. As long as the devs don’t die of old age.

Also, unless you’ve got a way to pay rent or a house you own, good luck getting on housing assistance. Most cities have a waiting list months or years long - I know last time I had to look into it for myself, it was something like 15 months of waiting for a potential open slot anywhere in the city.

Fosscord changed to “spacebar” a while back. If you want a more Discord-like experience, try the Cinny or Comet Matrix client. And on mobile the SchildiNext Chat client. Although I really can’t recommend Matrix as a replacement at all.

Steph Sterlings’ recent video hits it directly. The big publishers see Balatro doing well, so they go copy Balatro. They spend a lot of effort looking for the next Balatro in all the wrong places. Their attempts to copy it will fail, because people who like Balatro will just play Balatro. This will continue until there’s a new indie darling dominating the sales charts, and then they’ll try to copy that.
I remember the DS had a similar feature. You could connect to people nearby and they could download the game and play with you. It was super cool, and I hope this becomes more common.
Yup, me and my sister did occasional Pokemon battles/trading and Mario Kart races with each other using the Download Play or whatever it was called. I think even 3DS had it, or something similar to that effect. I just wish I had enough friends who actually played Pokemon back then, cause at my elementary school only one friend had a 3DS and played Pokemon. Everyone else was too busy trying to be “cool” and play GTA and CoD 😮💨
Didn’t they lift the PSN account requirement on PC just a few days ago? Imagine if they could not play the game during the outage, if Sony didn’t lift the requirements. I kinda would have loved to see this, because it could mean a huge shift in gaming based on real world proof.

If Sony had held firm on a PSN sign-in for Helldivers 2, it would have been just as borked on PC as it was on console. Ditto for if Sony had retained its log-in requirement for singleplayer games: You could effectively play God of War Ragnarok offline after creating or logging into a PSN account (unless you opted for a handy mod), but just like installing a PS5 disc drive, a PSN outage would have prevented first-time setup of something that simply does not require an internet connection.

I want to address this section by the author. Should any old disc drive work offline? Yes. Do PlayStation’s? No.
In the interest of saving money, Sony doesn’t pre-pay for the Blu-Ray Disc Association License, so they use the internet to know when to pay the license fee on behalf of the user. So from a legal standpoint by an entity which does not want to get sued, their course of action to save money requires this.
I read an article testing the same disc drive in multiple PlayStations and they continued to work. My guess is that Sony pays for console X to be able to use a disc drive when one is inserted, and then pays for console Y when one is inserted. They probably can check the ID of the disc drive, but they also probably don’t care that much.
