Why can’t we get a law going that if you stop supporting some software product, game or otherwise, you should open source it and hand over control to the public?

Cleverdawny,

Games should be public domain after 25 years, everything else at 50.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

Why not everything? Honestly even 25 years seems too long, make it 10.

Cleverdawny,

some book series take longer than that to finish

Sendbeer,

Might give George Martin some incentive to finish Winds of Winter though.

Cleverdawny,

I don’t think he even knows how to finish it

Sendbeer,

Oh yeah I agree. It’s got to be a challenge to bring all his characters and plot lines together. Sadly, I think the show is the only ending we are going to get.

Cleverdawny,

I think it is the Lost problem. He’s got all these hints and foreshadowing going and no idea where they’re actually going. Disappointing and evidence of lazy writing, so I’ve stopped reading his works overall

Khanzarate,

Yeah but if someone wants to write their own sequel to a first book, before the series is done, that’s fine. Still not canon, just fanfic that can make a profit, and that sounds fine to me.

Cleverdawny,

What happens when grifters generate a billion AI knockoffs and an artist can’t protect their intellectual property

Khanzarate,

The above was advocating for a 25-year period between publishing and public domain. They’ll have to somehow pay that mortgage with a quarter of a century of profit somehow.

New books get new protections anyway, so a 25-year-old series only loses book 1 to public domain. They can also release new editions of book 1 with new (canon) content, and those new things get new protections, too.

Cleverdawny,

10, actually, is what he said

TeoTwawki,
@TeoTwawki@lemmy.world avatar

I think at a minimum if you stop publishing and supporting your own work you shouldn’t get to cry copyright whem somebody else does. For that context 10 certainly seems plenty long…

bolexforsoup, do games w The First Borderlands Movie Clip Looks Like An SNL Skit

I just don’t understand why this is even being made. Borderlands is definitely nowhere on my list of games I want adapted. I understand I am not the arbiter of what gets made into movies, but it definitely feels like a shared sentiment among the general gaming population lol just feels like a bizarre choice

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

they’re about 10 years too late on this. can’t even blame the pandemic.

bolexforsoup,

Yeah no one has been excited for it in years. It peaked a long time ago. Pre-sequel was a disaster, 3 landed with a mediocre thud, tales has a following but it’s modest. This is not going to go well.

SkyNTP,

It’s being made because there is a successful franchise to be exploited to death for the sake of earning a few more pennies for shareholders.

You aren’t looking at the creative human spirit here. You are looking at a stupid money printing machine banking purely on the inertia of fans hoping for more of what made the original work of art magical.

bolexforsoup,

I get that normally but my point is…can borderlands still be considered a successful franchise in 2024?

BL2 was 13 years old and it’s never hit those heights since. Each mainline release has performed poorly or mediocre and TFTB has been pretty well received but they weren’t huge releases like the main games. They’ve been sort of irrelevant for almost a decade, limping along to middling applause lol

BL3 did well financially for the most part but that was what? 5 years ago? And critically it did poorly/had no staying power. It died pretty quickly.

djsoren19,

The first Tales was well received, but it was made by Telltale and much closer to the Borderlands 2 era. Gearbox made another one recently that was terrible and panned.

I think you’re right in saying the franchise is just dead. As someone who played actually thousands of hours of BL2 in my youth, I have zero interest in the rumored Borderlands 4. I think I own all the DLC for 3 and just never bothered to play through all of it.

bolexforsoup,

TWAU2 when telltale :(

HappycamperNZ,

You could easily exploit borderlands- but live action? Its like a live action Kerby.

TachyonTele,

That would be an awesome horror flick.

fckreddit, do gaming w Geoff Keighley Wants You To Lower Your Expectations For Summer Game Fest

Don’t worry Geoff, when it comes to AAA games, my expectations are already at rock-bottom. I expect almost every single AAA game to have some kind of catch be it microtransactions, or live service, or some shitty launcher requirement, etc.

bungle_in_the_jungle,

Ya but what about the AAAA games?

fckreddit,

Not by much, but I sure am excited about AAAAA games.

But, over the last four years, CDPR has been able to turn the ship around with free updates, and DLC.

Why is it called free updates nowadays? Updates are always free, no?

smeg,

You already know the answer to that question ;)

But seriously, I’d assume because so many “live-service” games paywall any new updates behind “battle passes” or whatever they’re calling their subscription model this week.

SnipingNinja, do gaming w Larian Studios Is Officially Done With The Baldur’s Gate Series

Unpopular opinion probably, but creators should be allowed to stop creating more stories inside a particular world. It’s like the issue we had with TV shows just getting the chewing gum treatment. Some worlds should have an end. Though maybe there can be spin-offs in this case, stories unrelated to the current cast in any way.

Malgas,

maybe there can be spin-offs in this case

They haven’t said they intend to stop making D&D games. And every D&D crpg in the last 20-odd years (since Torment, I think) has been set in the Forgotten Realms. So it seems highly likely that future games will be loosely related to BG, just without that specific title.

I would love to see them bring back some of the weird old settings, like Dark Sun, Spelljammer, or even Dragonlance. But I’m not holding my breath.

OrgunDonor,

Ori and the Will of the Wisps(Great)
Sunset Overdrive(Good)
Battletoads(Good, at least I enjoyed it)
Forza Horizon 4 and 5(both are good, but definitely feeling a little repetitive and overly done now for me)
Flight Simulator

That is all I got though. and technically Forza Horizon 4 is 5 years and 12 days.

brawleryukon,
@brawleryukon@lemmy.world avatar

Sunset Overdrive(Good)

Released in 2014, so while good, doesn’t quite fit the “from the last 5 years” criteria (unless you’re specifically talking about the PC port, which just squeaks in by a month, but I’m not sure that’s quite in the spirit of the discussion).

OrgunDonor,

I didnt actually realise the PC version was a year later(it was the PC release date I was looking at). Well... shit.

sheogorath,

Point of Forza, driving cars around in circles will get repetitive after some point tho. I played Horizon 4 much more than 5 because 4 has a ranked system. I’m definitely going to play more Horizon 5 if they have a ranked system.

Yeah I know, the show came out and everyone is hyped because of that. But maybe put those resources into fixing shit in Starfield?

Caligvla,
@Caligvla@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Starfield was so forgettable even Bethesda already forgot about it.

deeves,

And you know what? That would be fine.

If they market it as a side experiment, a AA game, priced at $40.

But no, they marketed it as Star Citizen 2.

GoodEye8,

Don’t you know Bethesda? They won’t even fix bugs that are thoroughly documented by the community and take 5 minutes to fix. They’re not going to fix a game that is missing entire features.

Prox,

Starfield can’t be fixed. The game’s issues are rooted in its core - procedurally generated maps, zero-consequence writing, forgettable gunplay. They could fix stuff like base building, giving it an actual purpose, for example. But in order to make exploration and role playing interesting/fun they’d have to effective make a whole new game.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I’m still optimistic. No Man’s Sky, Cyberpunk, and Fallout 76 took their heaping trash and glued things until it became fun. And Starfield has a lot of really good working pieces that can be salvaged.

But you might also be right. I can’t imagine Bethesda fixing quests or narrative elements.

arefx, (edited )

Cyberpunk had a good story and characters, and basis for a game it just was rushed lut the door unfinished. They actually care about making No Man’s Sky better and delivering on their initial promise, then surpassing it when they initially failed and let everyone down. Bethesda doesn’t care. They just want money. They aren’t going to even consider making starfield a good game unless They add an atom shop first and stuff to spend the money on

RizzRustbolt,

I think you’re wrong about that.

They’d use a seperate currency for a Starfield shop.

I was under the impression that they had fully shelved PvE for OW2. They basically lied and released the same game with a few tweaks to the match format. Was there actually any hope for even a pared-down co-op mode?

H1jAcK,

There was right at the very start, to help push units. I believe it was less than six months into ow2 when they realistically cancelled pve

FrankTheHealer,

There was hope initially, but as a huge overwatch fan, when Jeff Kaplan, the former game director of Overwatch, left Blizzard, I could see the bullshit that lay ahead. It took too long for others to realize.

Jeff was the goat, I wonder what he’s currently up to

FrankTheHealer,

Apparently, he and some ex Blizzard people created a new studio. But itl be a few years before they have any games to unveil. And honestly, that’s fine. I mean he could announce he’s retiring and it’d be fine. He earned it as far as I’m concerned.

Kirkkh, do games w Nexus Mods Fine With Bigots Leaving Over Removed Starfield ‘Pronoun’ Mod

I’m non-binary and I’m afraid to express my gender in public. It’s good to know I should also be afraid to express my gender in a VIDEO GAME (points for realism I guess).

saze,

Where do you live, Iran? Also the mod doesn’t impinge on your ability to express yourself. Not sure how that relates to being afraid in a game.

MikeT,

This mod “impinge” on NexusMod’s rights, it’s their private service and they have the right to set conditions on it. One of which, mods cannot remove diversity.

It’s as simple as that. The people can go elsewhere to find the same mod or share it among themselves.

As for Iran statement, are you serious? There are people getting murdered in USA for even being non-binary. Even “binary” people are getting shot for being inclusive. Like this one www.cnn.com/2023/08/21/us/…/index.html

abraxas,

Let me guess, you don’t have any trans friends. Probably don’t have any gay friends, either.

I know no fewer than 5 people who have been physically assaulted over their sexuality or their gender identity. My local pro-LGBTQ church was vandalized by people who left messages about how god hates them.

You deserve all those downvotes you’re complaining about if you really believe that non-binary people in the Western world aren’t reasonably afraid to express their gender.

And as for “how it relates to…a game”. Can you imagine being Jewish and a bunch of pro-nazi mods made it to the frontpage of your favorite game? Can you imagine if then everyone started bitching because the site took those hateful mods down?

Games, as online communities, are used to “innocently” draw people towards extreme beliefs.
