PyroNeurosis, do gaming w My primary use of portable consoles has been lounging around the house.

I see the other side - if I’m not using my SteamDeck, it’s because I’m having a good enough time with the ‘real world’.

Lolseas, do games w 6* months away now. If you're on 10, do you plan to upgrade? Make the jump to Linux?

I thought I read some time ago that Windoze 10 would be the last version of Windoze ever…

Manticore,
@Manticore@lemmy.nz avatar

Yeah I remember thr same thing. Everything else was suppose to be a package update.

But back-end technology and usage expectations change, and there’s a limit to what front-end changes an existing user tolerates. That was never a promise they could keep.

It has lasted a really long time, though. I don’t decry 11 existing. I’m upset they’re sunsetting 10 without giving us a chance to wait for 11 to get better, let alone for ‘oops we fixed the fuckups’ W12.

benjaminoakes,

Well, it can be the last version of Windows for you. 🙂

Ubuntu is nice. I use it daily. Others in my family too. And there are other options too. I hear Mint is nice though I haven’t used it much.

Give it some thought. 🙂

glitchdx,

i remember it as “the last version of windows you’ll ever need” and they were absolutely correct.

Kit, do games w 6* months away now. If you're on 10, do you plan to upgrade? Make the jump to Linux?

I’m a lifelong Windows user and tried Linux many many times but could never wrap my head around it. Recently I installed Nobara and it’s exactly the noob-friendly experience I need. All of my games run flawlessly, even the VR game I play. And everything is just FASTER. I never realized how bloated Windows was until now. I can’t imagine going back to Windows at this point.

Sabata11792,

What headset? I have my Index mostly working on Nobara, but can’t figure out how to get it to show as an audio device.

Kit,

Quest 3. I only play Resonite which has native Linux compatibility so it might be easier for that reason.

Empricorn, do games w 6* months away now. If you're on 10, do you plan to upgrade? Make the jump to Linux?

Full Linux, I’m not installing that anti-privacy, ad-ridden Windows 11 OS. It’s dangerous to use an unsupported system, so I’m going to be deleting my Windows partition. I know I’ll run into some issues on Linux, but I’m forcing myself to learn more and work through them!

@kazerniel@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll upgrade to 11 Enterprise via massgrave.

Sadly with Adobe and some of my online games not supporting Linux, I have to stick with Windows :/ I’ll just try to disable all the telemetry and AI crap via O&O and group policies.

Retrograde,
@Retrograde@lemmy.world avatar

Damn, Adobe doesn’t support Linux at all? Guess I’m staying on Windows too :/

Soapbox1858,
@Soapbox1858@lemm.ee avatar

The only way to use Adobe products on Linux are the web apps (which are limited) or in a windows virtual machine (slow) or by dual booting into windows (annoying).

You can run really old versions of Photoshop via Wine. But if your needs are that simple, you can probably just use Photopea.

For my use case of Lightroom for accessing and editing final photos across my computer and phone, and occasional photoshop use (mostly for printing) I am able to get by with the web apps, and windows virtual machine.

I would love to drop adobe. But the Lightroom Mobile cloud storage sync feature is too invaluable to me right now and there is no other option that comes close to that feature.

Retrograde,
@Retrograde@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, yeah - Lightroom itself is their crown jewel these days, let’s be honest

kazerniel,
@kazerniel@lemmy.world avatar

No, all the current versions are reported various levels of broken :/ Generally they can’t install, so you have to copy an installation from Windows, then there are some that don’t load at all, some only load to splash screen, some do work after you patch their broken UI and manually copy some Windows DLL-s. So idk, you might get lucky with the specific program/version/feature combo you need, but it just sounds like a pain to me.

rabber,

Ya I can’t live without Adobe suite so same boat

Asafum,

What is O&O? I’m not to keen on jumping to Linux either, but I REALLY don’t like the idea of having recall active and having Microsuck know literally everything I do…

kazerniel,
@kazerniel@lemmy.world avatar

O&O Shutup10++ (theoretically works on 11 too)

Not sure what it can do on Home/Pro editions, I’ve only ever tried it on Enterprise.

Asafum,

That looks awesome, thanks for sharing!

umbraroze, do games w Are there any games you don't play as it was intended to be played? If so, what game and how?

Most of my time in Elden Ring has been 1) ogling at the landscapes going “Holy shit this is metal”, and 2) bravely running away.

Sebastrion,

What? How else i’m supposed to play it?

Toribor,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

Bravely running away is the quintessential FromSoft experience. The ultimate flex on enemies is to not even bother attacking them and just rolling to dodge occasionally while you grab items and run past them to the next checkpoint.

vxx, do games w Are there any games you don't play as it was intended to be played? If so, what game and how?

Battlefield One

I don’t play it anymore, but when I did with a friend, I broke the healer mechanic.

I always stayed with my friend and our team, and instead of a weapon I was carrying a syringe.

In a Match I ressurected up to 70 people, making us pretty much an undying army.

I would always top the leader Board in any game Mode.

A couple months in I saw copycats, but nobody came close to my insanity.

The next Iterations of the game sucked for me because they nerfed the mechanic extremely.

I think I’ve seen a video showcasing this tactic. Dude with a Syringe just running around, picking up his teammates as soon as they downed. It was great :D

Caesium, do games w 6* months away now. If you're on 10, do you plan to upgrade? Make the jump to Linux?

I’ll stick with 10 until steam itself stops supporting it I think

The only thing stopping me from really considering Linux is because I’m a Destiny player

Already moved all my PC stuff to Linux. Laptop, desktop, media server. Been wanting to do this for years. Thanks, Valve and Proton, and to all those Linux developers who made this transition possible. Fuck M$

iAmTheTot, do games w I really need these games ported to Steam. What do y'all have on your lists?

Final Fantasy Tactics, ideally the War of the Lions version.

TheLowestStone,
@TheLowestStone@lemmy.world avatar

That one you could just emulate.

Stovetop,

You can, though from personal experience it can be a bit finicky if you’re trying to emulate the better PSP version. There are some optional patches that can be applied to it to improve stability, but it still crashes on me a few times in PPSSPP.

A native PC release would have been nice to have. It’s one of the few FF games still not available on PC/Steam.

Alternatively, one could grab the Android version and try to run that on PC through the now-deprecated WSA, but the mobile port is touch input only with no controller support.

iAmTheTot,

I have the android port already and have tried to get a reliable way to play it on PC and it’s just too much of a pain in the ass 😅

iAmTheTot,

I’d prefer native.

Ashtear,

Rumors abound for a remaster of this one, but I’m gonna start thinking it was a casualty of SQEX’s recent restructuring if it doesn’t surface this year.

iAmTheTot,

Those rumours are a decade old at least. I don’t believe stuff like that anymore until its out, lol.

Elevator7009, do games w Are there any games you don't play as it was intended to be played? If so, what game and how?

There are a few mobile or web idle/incremental games I have used as a substitute for a Pomodoro timer. Oh, I am really into the game and it only progresses if this is the focused tab? I really want to make progress, but I am in a period of the game where active play isn’t that rewarded, and just watching the screen while I wait to earn the upgrade is pretty boring? How about we just leave my phone with that as the active tab, and I check back when the upgrade should be earned? Keeps me off my phone and doing the actual things I should be doing instead. Somehow, “abusing” games like this works better for me than the Forest app which has the explicit intention of making sure you do not touch your screen for a set length of time and instead do something else off your phone.

What's a Pomodoro timer?There is a “Pomodoro technique” where you work for some longer amount of minutes, often 25, and then take a break, usually 5 minutes. Repeat the process a few times, then take a longer break instead of a shorter one. Repeat. The gist of “Pomodoro timer” is just whatever timekeeping thing you’re using to pull this off, whether it be a kitchen timer shaped like a tomato or a phone timer.

I also “abuse” Pokémon Masters EX in a similar fashion. You’re expected to level up with some combination of putting them through battles that cost stamina to play through, and some pretty easy-to-obtain level-up items. And although there is an Auto option I have a feeling you are intended to manually do the battles in-game. Instead, I start story mode battles which cost no stamina to play through, that still reward me with XP no matter how many times I repeat it, and have the game fight the battle for me with the Auto setting. I check back when the battle is done and restart it. I have essentially turned this into an idle/incremental game, albeit one with a pretty short time between waiting and checking back in on the game. Free level-ups! Even though it does take much longer than the intended way, which is why I suspect nobody tried to prevent this method from working. I like doing this for some reason, and it’s probably the main reason I still keep this game downloaded despite my usual allergy to gacha games.

Huh, never knew my approach to work had an actual name. That’s neat! Thanks for teaching me something new.

acosmichippo, do games w What open-world games on Steam have satisfying movement, like Arkham Knight or Spider-Man?
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

maybe not quite what you’re looking for but the shadow of mordor series has a liiiitle bit of that. obviously not as city-focused as arkham or spider-man.

TwoBeeSan,

Your character becomes a double jumping revenge ghost sprinting through the environment pretty early in the second one.

Good suggestion.

anakin78z, do games w Is Baldurs Gate 3's voice acting so great that it ruined other games for me?
@anakin78z@lemmy.world avatar

One thing I find jarring about BG3 is the lack of vo for the player character. It seems like a weird omission in this day and age. (Not counting the dumb ‘I clicked here, so my player has to say something’ vo. Like, shut the fuck up with your dumb chess references, Gale!)

brucethemoose,

It’s supposed to be immersive, I think, so as not to force a voice that doesn’t match the roleplaying in your head.

I’m with you, though, I’d much prefer VA.

Elevator7009,

I am in the other camp, I like the immersion.

I also have a tendency to not bother with VA, though, and to just click through the second I finish reading the dialogue, except for lines in particularly dramatic parts of the story. Sometimes not even then. Just figure I’d offer a counter opinion especially since this thread is probably going to be full of people who always choose voice acting when it is an option, given the thread is all about it. I am glad so many people derive joy from it, just because it is Not For Me doesn’t mean I think it’s Bad And Worthless :)

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I played BG3 straight after Cyberpunk and that really stood out to me as well. The immersion and emotional impact of voiced protagonist lines really got me invested in Cyberpunk in a way I missed in BG3.

Lesrid,

They recorded some lines for the custom character. They think aloud when you approach the gith gank squad.

They also reverted a decision to have all the origin characters do a bizarre past tense narration in favor of the present universal narration the familiar narrator VA does present tense. Maybe they abandoned having the player character speak when they changed that course.

kieron115,

I think the silent protagonist choice is valid in more of “sandbox” story like BG3. Speaking for myself, voiced protagonists tend to “lock” me into a specific character. I absolutely love the voice acting for Geralt of Rivia but when I play a witcher game I’m not inserting myself into the game, I’m becoming Geralt and making choices based on how I believe Geralt would make them.

anakin78z,
@anakin78z@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t really see it being a sandbox. I mean, all answers are given, and you select from those choices. That’s the same as other games that have pc vo. I feel like it would have made more sense to have no voice options at all, and to just get rid of the ridiculous quips. That way, you create your own voice in your head. In no universe would the character I created complain about having to put her hands onto everything before opening a door.

Anyway, not a big deal, but like I said, it was a bit jarring.
