violetring, do gaming w This is spot on for so many games

Not enough caves.

Karjalan,

People “this game is so unrealistic, there’s no way these biomes would be this close and distinct”

Also people “flying through space for weeks to visit a baren rock is so bullshit and biting”

grue, do games w Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas release 20 years ago today.
sir_pronoun,

This is the right answer

Lost_My_Mind,

It’s TOO real!!!

ampersandrew, do games w Marvel's Midnight Suns is criminally underrated
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I think a lot of us would have appreciated a more optional approach to a lot of the story stuff back at the base. Some of it can go on for a long time, may not be particularly engaging or exciting, and can just leave you wishing you could get back to the combat loop. Also, what’s up with that walking/jogging animation at the home base? I’ve spent $50 in the Unreal store and imported motion captured animations, ready for use in a commercial game, that looked better than that and could be hooked up in a few hours.

It’s a very good game that, when I recommend it, typically comes with an asterisk attached.

BigBananaDealer,
@BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee avatar

the walking animation is like a runway models walk 🤣 no clue why they did that

eestileib,

Everbody is collapsing into their lower back and would be way imbalanced in real life. Running would be painful with that posture.

Graphy,

Yeah I couldn’t care less about the story and just wanted more fights.

I refunded the game because the goddamn animations couldn’t be sped up 100x or skipped. Yeah dawg I get it blades doing a flip or some shit jfc

False,

They had a free weekend and I was enjoying it until all of the story stuff back at the base. I typically like that kind of stuff but there was way too much of it.

cdipierr,

I think the big problem wasn’t just the quantity, but the content. Every conversation felt like a character was just narrating their wiki bio to me, and not actually talking about anything current.

eestileib,

Yeah I just wanted to play the arena combat.

I wanted to buy a $40 deck builder game with cool IP, they wanted to sell me a $70 AAA production with a bunch of external stuff that I found pretty boring.

I ended up not buying.

Katana314,

I got the impression the writers had read a bunch of niche Marvel comics and wanted to impress with that knowledge. Maybe some fans of those characters actually enjoy that, but it didn’t flow well. I barely had any context for who this Hunter is, who Lilith is, and why they matter.

Sanctus, do games w I just read about early humans causing the extinction of megafauna and thought of Monster Hunter
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

For real, that was us. Megafauna are not viable anymore cause some hairless apes are going to throw stuff at the big target if its there. And apparently throwing stuff accurately is so OP that it took us to the top of the foodchain. Crazy.

edgemaster72,
@edgemaster72@lemmy.world avatar

That, and patiently walking at a brisk pace

rockerface,

Infinite stamina and aimbot

Jyrdano,

I know this was mostly a joke comment, but Id like to add that the second main culprit were rapid enviromental changes after the last ice age. It cant be all pinned on humans.

Barzaria,

independent.co.uk/…/humans-hunting-mammoths-extin…

People used spears as pikes and braced against earth to kill mammoths. Throwing stuff is OP as well.

Gradually_Adjusting, do gaming w TIL Stein Gate is also a game
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

To make a good game, the writers must have great creative influence over the development process

To contain their power, there needs to be books on shelves you can read

Mango,

I very disagree. How much writing is there in Chess? Can you think of any writing in Quake? You can definitely consider Quake great without the being any writing involved at all.

I think writers should stick to writing and game makers should go picking and choosing stories that would suit their game.

Gradually_Adjusting,
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

Tangentially, I did enjoy Noah Gervais’ “playing Quake for the plot” video. But the comment was just a tongue in cheek allusion to Morrowind anyway

Mango,

Loool, I gotta watch that now.

Mango,

Yo, holy moly! They basically did with quake how I just suggested by making a game and slapping a story on afterwards!!! How TF did I come up with quake as my example for this!?!?! It’s either pure luck or actual shared vision!

Gradually_Adjusting,
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

It doesn’t do much for my hopes of proving how important writing is, but it’s interesting isn’t it?

Mango,

It’s definitely important. It’s just distinctly different from the concept of a game. Putting it in games is even better!

scrooge, do gaming w Are souls games really as hard as everyone says?

No, they have a learning curve but that’s about it. They are not unfair or over difficult like some of those meme games that were popular a while ago

daggermoon,

When I was a kid I played a flash game called World’s Hardest Game or something like that. It was a puzzle game where you move a red square through a maze with obstacles. Bloodborne looks like a walk in the park in comparison. I know it’s sort of random but the meme games reminded me of that.

captain_aggravated, do games w I'm tired of every game being live service
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

Go for smaller studios and indies. Go for the nerd shit, too. Satisfactory just came out of early access, 1.0 is out, it does have multiplayer components but they do not host servers; you can open your own save file for friends to join or you can run your own dedicated server.

Factorio is launching a HUGE expansion pretty imminently.

Subnautica 2 is in the works (Below Zero is now officially an expansion pack of Subnautica 1).

Go play a game called Perfect Vermin. Do not look up anything about it just go play it.

AWittyUsername,

A full price expansion pack?

cows_are_underrated,
@cows_are_underrated@feddit.org avatar

For Factorio, yes. The expansion costs about the same as the normal game, but it adds insane amounts of content for the game. You can travel to other worlds, build entirely new factories and we even get nuclear fusion. Factorio space age is AFAIK absolutely worth the price.

captain_aggravated,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’s practically a sequel, they’re adding so much to it. And the original game is pretty good as well.

AWittyUsername,

I meant subnautica below zero

Step 1: Buy only from GOG
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit

Rentlar, do games w Why does the PC gaming industry still use such deceptive pricing?

Look, you will have a sizable contingent of people shelling out an additional $20 to $80 just to play a game a few days early, with little to no other benefits. Their impatience is capitalized on.

nic2555, do games w Corporate greed is killing RuneScape. What do people play instead?

I’m not sure what you mean by “low effort”? OSRS is an incredibly good game and keeps getting new content all the time. I’m happy to pay 15$ a month since we get a free update every wednesday. Sometimes it’s just some hotfix , other times it’s a whole new boss or continent. We had an new part of the map just last week.

Yes there is bot, but I never felt like it impacted my gameplay other than lowering the price of some items. The team is also doing a lot to ban them, it’s getting much better.

The community is booming. If you look around on YouTube, there’s a lot of content creators doing awesome thing on OSRS: custom game mode, weird twist on existing challenges, documentary, etc.

Honestly, I think we are currently in the golden age of Old school RuneScape, and if you feel like the game is bad or low effort, it might not be for you, which is fine, but the game itself is not the issue.

I hope you find some other game to give you what you had with RuneScape back in the days !

Cethin,

For the last bit hoping they’ll find something like what RS used to be, they won’t. That type of game can’t really exist anymore. (It obviously could make money, looking at OSRS’s player base, but it would never get the funding it needs.) The best options are OSRS (or RS3, which has pros and cons with OSRS and doesn’t deserve all the hate), potentially https://www.polygon.com/24099403/runescape-andrew-gower-brighter-shores-new-mmo in the future (developed by one of the brothers who created RS), or playing a modern MMO.

clickyello,

BS comes out next month btw!

PunchingWood, do games w Shower thought, traversal in open world games have turned from game mechanics to loading screens

I think God of War is fine since the entire experience is supposed to be one that does not get interrupted, there are never any camera cuts, and they hid a few loading screens behind portal effects.

I liked the Jedi Survivor style as well, it feels natural and doesn’t interrupt the gameplay. Much like Outlaws using cleverly hidden cutscenes to go from planet to space and other planets. It all keeps you in the immersion and experience. Climbing and other parkour stuff don’t feel out of place in these games, it would be quite boring if everything in games existed only on a flat plane and you’d never ever have to turn corners or climb anything, takes away the idea of exploration and discovering new things.

I much prefer the modern solutions over elevators and loading screens. Nothing is stopping anyone from just hitting pause and stretch their fingers if you feel like you need a break lol

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

God of War always struck me as the wrong game for that gimmick. Sure, there are no camera cuts, but you need to pull up your menu constantly to check the map, change gear, etc. It ends up feeling like there are hundreds of cuts.

Kalothar,

I’ve been playing God Of War Ragnarok and haven’t felt the need really to use the map much at all.

I do find the armor system to be annoying and basically decided to ignore all the gear I pick up, sell it, and upgrade the base items all the way instead because of the buffs the beginning gear gets if you upgrade all the way. All that to say I wish they just had a more robust leveling system instead.

Otherwise minus my deaths (playing on God Of War difficulty ) I’ve been feeling pretty immersed in it.

AceFuzzLord, do games w 2024 is about 75% done. Let's recommend the best games of 2024, but with a twist: only the ones with no paid DLC!

Peglin (Steam, iOS, Android, Switch)

Just released 1.0 a month ago. Simple enough gameplay loop. Throw orbs at pegs on board to fight enemies. Go down different paths on a map until you reach the boss fight at the bottom, upgrading and getting new orbs and relics along the way to help. Repeat 2 more times and you win. Has 20 levels of increasing difficulty after beating your first run, but locked behind standard progression.

Dungoens and Degenerate Gamblers (Steam)

Released beginning of last month. Play Blackjack against opponents, but you each have a life bar. Score higher than opponent to deal damage equal to the difference in your scores to them. Various non-playing cards and other nonsensical cards will appear as playable cards. Things like a get well soon card, SD card, a flat out 21 card, a birthday card, and many more can be found. Go until you either lose all your health or beat the final boss on one of two different routes to be taken.

ouch,

Could you split this into two comments, as per rule 2? It makes it easier to vote and discuss without mixing both.

mesamunefire,

Peglin is great.

Another_earthling,

How long can you play the game without getting bored?

mesamunefire,

I have over 300 hours still going. It’s only if you like that kind of game.

Another_earthling,

I do. It’s on my wishlist because I have so many new games that I didn’t play yet that it wouldn’t make sense to buy it now I just wondered, in regard to the gameplay, if some people eventually feel bored after some days :) so thanks for the feedback

Tagger, do games w Horse archers ruin every game they are in.

It’s chess where I find they’re super op - I mean seriously, the ability to no scope bishops from across the map while moving like a knight is totally unbalanced and the Devs need to too back the update.

Razzazzika, do games w What letter has the best games?

F encompasses all the Final Fantasy , Final Fight, Fable, Fallout, Far Cry, Forza Horizon series, and some individual games like Forspoken, Forsaken, Fez, Fermi Paradox, Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy, Fae Tactics and many others.

BastingChemina,

Factorio !

Noodle07,

That’s all you need really

De_Narm, do games w What letter has the best games?

For the sake of adding something new, X is pareto optimal in terms of having both the best and the fewest games.

  • Xenogears
  • Xenosaga (maybe, haven’t played it yet)
  • Xenoblade anything
  • X-COM anything

I’d probably be content with only playing games from the Xeno- meta-series alone.
