SweetCitrusBuzz, (edited ) do gaming w Linux users: Are we over-reliant on Steam?
@SweetCitrusBuzz@beehaw.org avatar

Yes. However, before they started supporting and prefering linux, and working on proton then getting any game working on linux was a real mess and the average person couldn’t do it for most games.

Sadly most other games stores in the digital space like gog don’t give a shit about linux, thus there is still no galaxy on linux, nor are their preservation efforts coming to linux for a long time.

Lfrith,

Yeah, I set up heroic launcher to play some games from GOG, but achievements didn’t work when I tried it and save sync was kind of buggy. So for GOG just stuck to playing on Windows, since I do want my achievements and time tracked.

I wish other big platforms tried more in trying help escape Windows instead of just being bystanders and not even bothering with Linux launchers themselves.

muhyb,

Time tracking and achievements work for me. You might need to update GOG reditrubutables package though Heroic should do it automatically.

Lfrith,

Must have gotten an update since I last used it. That’s a nice change.

muhyb,

Yeah, it is. There is even a cloud sync feature now (though it’s still in beta, mostly works). Only thing missing is limiting download speed. Apparently GOG need to do that through gogdl.

SweetCitrusBuzz,
@SweetCitrusBuzz@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, it’s sad that they don’t, gog really needs to get on it imo. Though have you tried running galaxy through proton?

I want that too, heck even Epic could easily make their games native to linux with a single button press but they don’t want to.

slauraure,

For the games that natively run on Linux I don’t see any difference in how they’re preserved. Haven’t encountered anything that doesn’t run on modern systems.

With that said they could get an easy win by making a Linux version of Galaxy and borrowing Proton to run non-Linux titles.

SweetCitrusBuzz,
@SweetCitrusBuzz@beehaw.org avatar

I have, sadly. On steam once the native linux version of a game wouldn’t run but the windows one would through proton.

However, yeah I agree, they could so I don’t know why they don’t.

finitebanjo, do games w The Steam controller was ahead of its time

Behold! The perfect controller layout, from the far future:

spoilerhttps://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/fdafc80c-adae-49d0-8df0-dc0bb359e3fe.jpeg

Blackmist,

It’s weird how quickly Sony discovered the perfect layout and how little it’s changed since.

Analogue triggers are the only really great addition since the original Dual Shock.

The gyro aim on the PS5 (well technically all the way back to the PS3, only not as good) are actually really nice too, but I can count the games that use it on one hand. I’ve no idea why devs are so adverse to using them.

The PS4/5 touch pad would be OK if it wasn’t just used as a giant Select button, because for some reason the actual Select button is now “Share” which literally nobody ever asked for.

slaneesh_is_right,

If only it wasn’t made for tiny hands.

Blackmist,

You’re an original Xbox controller kind of guy aren’t you?

From the PS4 onwards they did at least acknowledge that most people don’t have tiny child-sized hands, and that most consoles are bought by adults.

finitebanjo,

But you can reach all the middle buttons without changing grip.

raker,

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/7394223a-57b1-4316-ba06-9a00fa615e78.jpegCan confirm. Mine is about 22 years old. Unfortunately the USB adapter isn’t working anymore.

Omega_Jimes, do games w The Steam controller was ahead of its time

It’s an outstanding controller for games with mouse input, but it’s less than fantastic for traditional controller games, imo.

It’s also very divisive. I love it for couch Civilization, but I have an 8bitDo for expedition 33.

Blackmist,

Yeah, I couldn’t get on with it at all. Most games are designed for a right analogue stick, and not having one just kills it.

Megaman_EXE, do gaming w What are signs that the game devs aren't gamers themselves?

I’ve been streaming recently, and one thing that stands out to me is when you first boot up a game and it doesn’t have a start menu with settings.

I noticed it before, but now I really notice it. If something is wrong with the settings, sometimes that intro is unplayable or a less than optimal experience. So you have to try and skip, fix the issue, and then restart the game and try again. This seems to be more of a PC issue than a console issue, but even on consoles sometimes you need to adjust things like brightness or add subtitles

AppleTea, do games w The Steam controller was ahead of its time

I wish it had a d-pad rather than the left trackpad, but otherwise yeah

If only mine weren’t broken 🥲

sugar_in_your_tea,

Yeah, the left trackpad sucks. I think they could also fit another joystick if they made the right trackpad a little smaller.

dualpad,

I love the left trackpad. I love it for movement, since I like setting stuff like dash, crouch, slide to it on a click which doesn’t feel good doing the same with a joystick click. And I like setting a sprint activator on the very edge which is easier to avoid not accidentally triggering, because of the trackpad size.

I’m actually opposite where I wish the left joystick on the Steam Controller was a dpad.

Psythik,

I also want six face buttons for fighting games. Somebody, please release a controller like this already. I haven’t seen one since the Sega Saturn.

else,

Modern fighting games aren’t really designed for 6 buttons. I guess if you want to play SF6 with only face buttons that could be neat, but you’d still want to map parry and DI to shoulder buttons. The reality is that developers know that most pad players have 4 face + 4 shoulder buttons and most stick and leverless boxes have 8 buttons.

That said, 6 face button pads definitely exist. Most of the ones I’ve seen are from Hori, but there are quite a few brands that offer one.

Psythik,

Okay lol maybe I want them for other games too.

Six face buttons, two joysticks, a D-Pad, a touchpad, four triggers (two being analog with a click at the end of the range), four paddles (like the Steam controller), HD rumble. That’s what I want in a controller. Nothing less. Such a controller does not seem to exist.

tal,
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

There’s a whole class of controllers, often called “fightsticks”, which have a full-size arcade-style joystick and a ton of buttons, to reproduce the feel of arcade fighting games.

www.reddit.com/r/fightsticks/

!fightsticks (not very active)

www.amazon.com/Arcade-Sticks/s?k=Arcade+Sticks

Psythik,

But I don’t want a fight stick. I want a single controller that can do it all.

phar,

8bitdo M30. Phenomenal.

Psythik,

Not quite what I’m looking for (but thanks). I should probably mention that I also need dual joysticks, quad triggers, quad paddles, a touchpad, and a D-Pad. Basically everything you can get on both a Steam controller and an XBOX controller, except with two extra face buttons.

Nalivai,

Left trackpad is also a d-pad though

altkey, do gaming w What are signs that the game devs aren't gamers themselves?

Singleplayer games with time-based farming simulator minigames you won’t complete without gaming the date\time in your system (easter eggs are welcome tho). Grindy platinum achievements well outside even a dedicated minority’s norms, just getting bigger numbers or save skamming for opposing endings. Button-mashers with an undisclosed randomization of a final result under the hood.

apotheotic,

Toby Fox was forced to add trophies to the PlayStation release of undertale and deltarune, and made them oppressively annoying in protest, so I feel like there are exceptions to this

Of course it’s limiting your options!

Screwing up the customer should not be an option you’re allowed to take!

Tanka, do games w Developer interview: my Q&A with a PC game 'repacker'

Small fun fact: Most steam games are cracked using Mr.Goldberg’s crack which is open source too. But this guy completely left the scene after throwing a tantrum in a chat for being a bigot and got banned.

Dyskolos,

A total shame. I do love to quickly “crack” my steam games. To either just play offline or keep an oder Version.

Got to keep the TV boxes in case you ever move. TV moving boxes are ridiculously expensive.

A while back I threw out the box for a $1000 item. It immediately broke and I needed the original packaging to return the thing.

So no, the box stays, at least for a year.

Congrats on the cabin! Is that more of a home or a getaway?

Also, I’m one of those guys who grew up on Lego Island. I can’t say I’d want to revisit it for anything other than a history lesson, but it was in fact important to a lot of us.

Just an escape!

I’ll keep my apartment in the city, of course, but I like the idea of having somewhere that I will perhaps be less inclined to work, or stay in a chair/sofa, and instead keep running wild. That’s the hope, anyway!
