IMHO, two hours is not nearly enough to get a feel for a game. At least, not for the sorts of games I tend to play. I spend longer than that just working through initial technical issues, configuration, and (in games that have one) the character generator.
I have to conclude that Steam’s return window is either intended to be just enough to see if you can get it running, or as much as Valve could talk publishers into tolerating.
imo the 2h refund window is not so you can judge if you’ll like the game, it’s so you can judge if you can tolerate it long enough to form an informed opinion
there’s been a few games i played under 2h of and thought to myself “this is terrible, i’m not having fun and i actively dislike playing this”, Steam’s no questions asked refund was a cure for regret i’d have felt if i had to see that game in my library forever. Games that i know take much longer to judge i borrow from a friend who’s into fitness and a girl, that’s what saved me from buying Starfield or Avowed
Two hours is the length of some high-budget media; eg, movies and plays.
I know that some games are slow-burn, but that’s something people have to weigh themselves. Ideally, you’d enjoy the slow burn itself. When I tried to “force myself through to the Good Part of Nier Automata”, I ended up hating the whole thing.
I think a lot of these are going to be placeholder for a while until more generalized communities like this one see more growth. It’ll be a while before we even hit 100k subscribers here, and you need to have a subset of those people who are looking to talk about an even more specific interest in more depth.
In principle I agree with you, but it’s also a “chicken and egg” type problem. Many people aren’t going to switch to Lemmy if there isn’t a modicum of coverage for more specialized topics.
I think getting to somewhere beyond 100K MAU will have a transformative effective on activity in some more specialized communities.
On one hand I understand this, but on the other hand I’d like to post games I find that fit these subgenres or talk about that subgenre without making myself the biggest spammer in !games, and I think (time will tell!) I do have the stubbornness necessary to scream into the void until people come along. Maybe I should crosspost the ones I think are most likely to have mass appeal…
I feel if I spontaneously quit all my niche gaming communities and posted everything I’d post there on a general community instead, I’d annoy everyone with a bunch of Steam links for games they probably do not care about. People in the niche communities are more likely to care about a link to a game in a genre they already like. Also, for most of the small communities I’ve got at least one other poster sometimes, and that’s better than nobody! Despite all the trouble with incremental.social and federation, when I can get on there we do have a few regulars chatting there and that’s nice.
contains gender politicsThere’s also just fans of a certain genre being used to backlash from the wider gaming community. I did get mostly upvotes when I posted !otomegames, which is mostly romance visual novels for women who like men, to !newcommunities. I appreciate it. But I am not sure how posting these games to !games would go over, especially when I suspect Lemmy to be male-dominated. Visual novels already suffer from the “it’s all just hentai” stereotype. Now add the “media for women, especially romance media, is stupid and vapid and silly” prejudice. And even for those who just live and let live, I suspect most of the general !games community would be disinterested in otome game posts, which is fair because I’m disinterested in romance and/or sex visual novels aimed at men who want to date women (although they should definitely be allowed to exist and people should be allowed to like them in peace). So both to avoid any backlash, and to avoid annoying the wider community, I don’t want to post those games to this general community. I still want a space for it on Lemmy though, so I made that community. I have one other regular poster and sometimes people drop in and comment.
You could make the argument that I’m simply posting low-quality content, and I’d just have to raise the bar for !games to accept my posts, and that I just want my niches back, to which I say: fair. But unfortunately I’m no video game expert or connoisseur. I play and enjoy. The lovely guide and wiki makers usually get there before I can. I’m not too good at coming up with fun discussion questions that are better than what I’d consider low-tier engagement bait back on Reddit like “name one good thing about [noncontroversial character]”. So link posts it is, better some on-topic content than none at all. And even if I did write a wonderful in-depth review or guide, if it’s not for some big mainstream appeal game but something that only genre enthusiasts really like, not sure how well !games would take to it. So that’s my rationale for having these niche communities. You’re still very free to think I’m wrong ;) Thanks for contributing in earnest to !games!
You’re probably right, but most of these do exist already, so I figure not why not continue trying to use them (and to direct attention from this big community there)? Also probably doesn’t help a lot of instances have general games communities. We’re pretty splintered. Now that I think about it I should probably crosspost to some of the bigger ones.
Are SD cards not still the standard storage for digital cameras? I can think of few things designed to produce more small writes than a digital camera.
This person is confusing me. I use SD cards for my cameras and drones and routinely move files and reformat them with no issue. I have several cards that are over 6 years old and used daily. SD is the standard for all current cameras and drones.
I’ve only heard about SD cards data getting corrupted when doing lots of small writes. This was something people talked about when the raspberry pi first came out I think. But, I’ve been using micro-sd cards for years for all sorts of things and never had a problem.
I’ve had an SD card in my dashcam for 6+ years now. Constantly writing and over writing from -20F (sometimes lower but it’s protected so I’ll stop at -20) to well over 110F when baking in the summer sun.
It’s got a battery so it continues to run for hours after I shut it off. Used to go 17 hours on the battery but that’s probably way less now.
My point being that the SD card has been rock solid in very extreme conditions for 6 years now. Sure I made sure to get the extreme use version, I but don’t buy this kind of thing on eBay or Craigslist and you’ll be fine. Maybe stay away from Amazon too.
A digital camera has several megabyte writes, every once in a while, filling up the SD card evenly. Even bad SD cards usually have many thousand write cycles before they degrade, so that’s not likely to be an issue. What is worse is if you have a log file, for example, that is stored in a fixed position on the card and gets updated several times a second
Hmm, for now only about the general fragility, due to simple controllers. But i think i have an article about this saved somewhere.
Btw, if you reformat an SD, I/O and lifetime will fall sharply, because of some block size parameters differing, above mentioned article goes in detail about this stuff.
Each write to a memory location wears out that location slightly degrading it’s oxide layer. Flash memories compensate for this by “wear-leveling” which spreads the writes around to different locations to make sure the device wears out evenly.
It will mark bad locations and stop using them. If you run with the device almost full then it cannot effectively wear level and the few open locations will be overused and wear out.
It’s not specifically small writes, it’s the number of writes to any one location. But of course it’s faster to do small writes so you end up with more if they are all small.
Also, there are flash memories optimized for performance that will wear out faster and others that are optimized for longevity that write slower.
Keeping the device cool will extend it’s life also.
For longest life, keep the device cool and mostly empty and minimize writes. In critical applications find a device that optimizes lifetime over performance.
Hold on, i think i now remember: this one was about SD usually having smaller block size, so each small write causing a multiple in blocks written, i think?
Can’t say for sure, because all are mixing high quality flash with recycled from the scrapyard quality. The big names only a bit less of the scrapyard.
Yes, this. I got a 1tb micro SD card a few years ago for my hacked Switch (Fuck Nintendo, especially now that they’ve went after emulation) and finding a LEGITIMATE SD card was very hard, especially since I wanted the high-capacity and they don’t just sell those at Wal-Mart. Be VERY careful about buying SD cards folks, lots of scammers out there in the markets now.
EDIT: forgot to add that I received TWO duds, fake SD cards that were NOT 1tb, when trying to get my SD card
Sounds like @MonkderVierte was saying it’s still a crapshoot even if it’s totally genuine. Like if you buy 10 for 10 different handhelds, maybe only half of them are still working after a couple years but the rest of them last two or three times longer… <speculating>
Endurance SD cards made for cctv cameras are the way to go. The Endurance versions are slower and slightly more expensive but they last a lot of writes.
The original Overwatch. I also know Apex Legends hasn't been cancelled, but they also took away Linux compatibility so it is essentially cancelled for Linux. That's one I miss.
TheHunter: call of the wild is the slowest fps I’ve ever played, its luxuriously chill. Mostly walking through beautifully executed forests during different weather and times of day to spot a group of deer drinking at a lake and then tryna shoot em all before they bolt off. Then the rest of the time is chasing down the blood trail to confirm the kill and get money to buy new weapons. Multiplayer and single player
TBH, I might struggle to actually shoot anyhing if it’s as gorgeous as the limited gameplay videos I’ve seen are depicting it. Slow paced walking simulator where you are challenged to spot wildlife, yes please.
Ive got many hours in this game. It is a very nice and easy going game for sure. There are some bugs that come up everynow and then but overall its a very pleasant game.
Just get a bluetooth controller and use the SteamLink app on your phone. It let’s you lounge back and play games just like the steam deck and for way cheaper. I’m actually finding it hard to justify buying a Steam Deck when I have this option.
I’m in the same situation, working 8 hrs at a desk and I can’t join the discord group like I used to during school years. Now I just watch tv on the main monitor and use SteamLink on my phone
I think if you tried an OLED Steam Deck, you might change your mind. The screen alone is amazing… But also, the fact that it’s a fully functioning Linux device is great as well. So much better than Android.
Yea oled is very nice, it’s what most phones today have too. (Mine included)
It is nice to have a portable computer, but op is asking for playing games and your games can have wayy better graphics if you stream it from a full gaming pc vs compromising quality to have it run on the steamdeck. When you’re just running games on steam there’s not that much more difference between the two.
Just play “Team Fortress 2 Classic” or “Open Fortress” both are really cool community projects without crates, or any micro transactions as far as I know.
Those projects look great! I will have to check both those out. My problem with a lot of community FPS games is that the community is just too small to play regularly (like Xonotic, for instance).
Is the top right one of these AI Ghibli images, that I’ve heard of these last few weeks?
Also, why is Fallout London and Skyblivion on that picture? Bethesda are supporting mods for their games, they don’t care that someone makes new stuff. Have they ever blocked one of these mods, like Take2 or Nintendo always do?
Because Bethesda tried to make money off of modders’ work, that’s why. Bethesda is as cancerous as Nintendo, especially after acquisition when the office “hunger games” started.
It’s like charging you 45% after building a house for using their shovel…
Ok? I don’t think taking money for mods is wrong. It’s not like Bethesda did this without the modders knowledge. Free mods still existed. Nowadays people just open a Patreon to get paid for this stuff.
Nobody argued taking money for mods is wrong. The argument is Bethesda taking ~50% of someone else’s mod pay is borderline worthy of racketeering charges.
It’s not like Bethesda did this without the modders knowledge. Free mods still existed.
So the choice was getting nothing and getting shafted by Toddy, most people chose to get nothing and you think that was OK, and not at all a sign of disgusting behaviour, because Bethesda looked modders in the eye while they robbed them?
While I agree with you, that the money distribution was unfair, I think if you’re actually comparing this to the shit Nintendo pulls all the time, you’re insane.
Also, if you’re calling me a fanboy, because I don’t immediately blacklist a company for a (in my opinion) small issue, you have to be one as well, because otherwise you’d live off the grid in the woods.
Edit: now that the placeholder comment has been replaced I can edit too.
While I agree with you, that the money distribution was unfair, I think if you’re actually comparing this to the shit Nintendo pulls all the time, you’re insane.
Bethesda, like Nintendo, has jumped the “bleed the fans dry” bandwagon, rather than make games that people love like in the days of yore. They indeed are as cancerous as Nintendo, just smaller.
Perhaps we can let Mick Gordon be the judge of that?
Made my jump to Arch (btw) a couple of years ago and haven’t really looked back. I have Win10 as a second boot option, but that’s reserved specifically for Game Pass and VR, but it’s very rare I boot it. Don’t care to upgrade even after EOL, and I’d never recommend Arch to anyone but the most comfortable with Linux, but it’s been a great option for me.
I saw that one thrown around when I was searching before. I wouldn’t really be playing it for the story, but as long as the story’s there, should I be familiar with the first two?
So sad about GoG’s revenue drop. It’s my store of choice and I genuinely find it more unintrusive than Steam, but if it keeps going like this, I wonder how long it will exist. Hopefully they manage to turn things around.
I want to like them, but I use Linux and they contribute almost nothing to gaming on Linux, so, I switched to Steam as my primary store for games. I still hope they do better and buy them games from time to time.
I have to second this, trying to get gog to work on steam is a royal pain in the butt, it’s like they tried to make it incompatible with WINE, unless it’s part of the lutris library you need to hope a launcher like heroic works. I didn’t have much luck with it but I know many did.
Most of the games I play are so niche that 'matchmaking' simply consists of whoever's available. Or sometimes it even requires pinging people on Discord.
Yup, either this or the matchmaking is in find-the-most-toxic-people-available mode. I almost stopped playing online to be honest, I’d rather play couch co-op or even a good solo game.
Personally, I think it’s about how impresonal modern matchmaking is.
You’re only ever playing against “enemies” and “enemies” should be “hated with the hot passion of a burning sun”. And if you lose, you’re never at fault, because your teammates sabotaged you!
People don’t have to maintain cordial relationships, because they will never meet their teammates or opponents again.
Compare that to stuff that works using servers, where each team is made up of the same pool of people from one round to the next. People actually make friends with each other, friend or foe, and have more fun as a result.
Yeah, you unlocked many memories of mine. I played CS back in 90s, train with bots and learn map layouts at home, then play team vs team in a club. A bit later with ADSL started to play online and it was still kinda cool. When life fast forwarded me to Quake Arena and R6S it was very fun but I never ever made any online friend. Maybe a couple of people in R6 with whom I played a few times but even then the toxicity outweighed the team play fun.
