I would give proprietary software 18+ rating too, nobody know what’s inside.

Siralim Ultimate. It’s like Pokémon but your party is essentially a machine built from passive effect interactions and the gameplay is like Diablo.

Absolute hidden gem.

Maggoty, (edited ) do games w PEGI gives Balatro an 18+ rating for gambling imagery

Loot boxes suck but the only thing separating this game from gambling is the use of real money. It’s literally a poker game.

This is the Steam Store description -

Combine valid poker hands with unique Joker cards in order to create varied synergies and builds. Earn enough chips to beat devious blinds, all while uncovering hidden bonus hands and decks as you progress. You’re going to need every edge you can get in order to reach the boss blind, beat the final ante and secure victory.

Yeah they were always going to get PEGI 18. This moaning is just a way to sell their game.

ech,

It’s literally not.

static09,

In Balatro, the Ante is the boss’s health and chips are the amount of damage done to a boss. The poker hands are just attacks done to the boss’s health. They use poker terms because it’s inspired by card games, not because there’s gambling.

Maggoty,

I didn’t say there was and neither did PEGI. The issue is all the terminology and visuals are gambling related. This is like giving a cigarette smoker a nicotine vape and saying it’s not cigarettes. It’s technically true but you’d be insane to authorize it for kids.

Tarquinn2049,

The whole point of the post is real gambling is rated as totally safe for kids. As long as it doesn’t use card or poker chips as imagery. Why is getting kids to actually gamble ok? Why is imagery associated with gambling so much worse than actual gambling for kids?

Maggoty,

No the whole point of this post is performative outrage as marketing. They knew exactly what rating a faux casino game was going to get them.

IzzyScissor,

This analogy is garbage. The “nicotine vape for kids” isn’t Balatro, it’s loot boxes. Balatro would be like candy cigarettes.

Maggoty,

Funny you should mention candy cigarettes.

Whether it’s candy cigarettes or a nicotine vape depends purely on the person playing the game. A gambling addict could easily see this as their nicotine vape, and it could easily prime kids for casinos.

sukhmel,

A good link, maybe image may be harmful even if it’s without context

BlueMagma,

You meant “chocolate cigarette” for your analogy, I remember they used to exists when I was a kid, don’t know if they still do.

Maggoty,

Funny you should mention candy cigarettes.

KinglyWeevil,

The only gambling in this game is picking the goddamn wheel card even though I know it’s going to give me “nope!”

Tarquinn2049,

So then explain why games with actual real money gambling aren’t rated 18+, is gambling “imagery” with no gambling really that much worse than having actual gambling?

Maggoty,

Ask PEGI why loot boxes aren’t rated 18+, I’m not defending them.

BradleyUffner,

Yahtzee uses “valid poker hands” and dice for scoring too. They sell that in toy stores.

Maggoty,

Yatzhee is dice. It uses combinations of numbers. They turn into points. Before you make any other ridiculous comparisons the idea is to perform to standard. Not to lower the standard. Gambling is a serious addiction and making games about it is a serious issue.

Tarquinn2049,

You can’t gamble with dice?

Soggy,

I played Yahtzee once and now I hustle back alley Craps foe drug money.

Maggoty,

If you want to be reductive everything is gambling. Even your birth.

Tarquinn2049,

I mean the kinds of gambling that might trigger someone with a gambling addiction. Isn’t that where you were coming from?

damnedfurry,

Yatzhee is dice.

So is craps, one of the most popular casino games on the planet.

BeardedBlaze,

These games not only have poker in the name, they are literally casino sims, and you play against other players:

store.steampowered.com/app/…/Prominence_Poker/

…playstation.com/…/UP2070-CUSA01104_00-UPUREPOKER…

Both pegi 12. Your argument is flawed.

ms_lane,

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Teepo,

Balatro doesn’t have anything like gambling. There’s no betting. You don’t even have an opponent. The chips are only points, and the goal is to get as high a score as you can. The rules vary wildly from poker in ways that could never work with multiple players, let alone with real cards. It just looks like poker at the start and that description helps give you an initial idea of how to play.

tal, do gaming w Please suggest budget controllers for kaizo mario..
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

good d pad

D-pads are the one aspect of a controller that I wouldn’t worry about much. I’ve only ever had one controller that had a D-pad that I wasn’t happy with, a Logitech in the mid-1990s that had a screw-in mini joystick on the D-pad. That rolled to the diagonal too easily.

thinks

Maybe the old NES controllers, which had a relatively-hard, non-rounded D-pad and could be tough on the fingers for long sessions.

I guess one could prefer the PlayStation-style or XBox-style D-pad position, though I’ve never had issue with either.

Do you have something in particular that you’re concerned about regarding D-pads? I’d expect pretty much anything out there to be fine, myself.

bread,
@bread@feddit.nl avatar

A decent example of a bad d-pad would be the Switch Pro Controller. Unless they’ve fixed it in a later revision, the controller has an issue with outputting diagonals when they aren’t intended.

Caves of Qud, baby. I don’t have much free time, and it is endlessly entertaining AND it boots super fast. Nice.

Been playing a bunch of stuff lately! Still deeply in love with Caves of Qud, a modern (ish, 14y of development) rpg in the classic rogue format. A true rogue like. Beautiful music, cool setting…

I got a steam deck so couch-compatible games like Cobalt Core, Get to Work and Enter the Gungeon.

Besides that, the usual rounds of Tarkov, and some Delta Force to try it out post release

muhyb, do gaming w Is there any (single player playable) game with $10 which has made you point any go "haha" or given you an equivalent feeling because it was that enjoyable for every moment you played it?

There are a lot actually but the first game that came to my mind after reading this was “Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection”.

Another one would be “OMORI”. But get ready for an emotional rollercoaster.

Edit: I just remembered the $10 requirement, which OMORI doesn’t meet even when on sale, yet.

rtc,

I see. I’ve recently even seen screenshots of Zwei: An Arges Adventure when a steam user posted them. Emotional rollercoasters are not what I’m looking for but I could check omori regardless, to see for myself.

muhyb,

An Arges Adventure didn’t age well though. Great game but the controls are terrible. The Ilvard Insurrection is at least modern and there is a little connection between these two, so you don’t need to play the first game before this.

rtc,

I enjoy stuff like pressing key combination 6–C–3–2–(A to E)–(1 to 4) to cast a spell to travel to specific areas in overworld, and combinations like C—7—4 to cast, say, a protection spell while in combat on the sorcerer’s turn, in an old school western RPG. The only things I really dislike are slow animations and needless actions which do not affect anything. With this in mind, do you think I’m likely to be troubled by the first one or not?

I can find myself as well by watching some gameplay if you cannot determine it. If you are certain though, it will make things easier—even if I decide to check myself later.

muhyb,

Well, it’s not exactly like that. While the second game is perfect with a controller, the first game cannot be playable with one. At least the PC version. It has some weird mixture of keyboard + mouse controls which is pretty weird for an action RPG game. Definitely not comfortable to play, but it’s playable. I think it’s the best if you try it for yourself, if you already have the game.

Zahille7, do gaming w What order should I play the Halo series in?

The order that they appear in MCC, which is pretty much release order. I would 1000% get the ODST and Reach campaigns as well, as those are top notch too.

CE, 2, 3, ODST, Reach. You can play 4 if you want so you can see how it started going downhill, and it has its moments.

Literaly one of the most popular Mods for Xcom 2

Macaroni_ninja,

Im familiar with the mod, but its a mod, the game was designed to be played the way you always balancing on a knives edge. So not much time to enjoy the content (for me at least), when you have constantly ticking clocks reminding you to hurry up.
