Back then i only had a few games but among all my friends we had a pretty good collection. As an adult playing on a retro console I’ve started to go through a lot of the games i never tried or didn’t own and only played a few times.

While I’d say the total NES library is a majority of garbage games (publishers just figuring out how to make games, not how to make good games) I think the big thing i noticed is that the good 8bit games look and feel drastically different than the garbage ones. When you learn the history of the games then it makes sense.

The quality of the sprites, the extensive design of menus, transitions and other interactions, the storyline and dialogue. Even with only 8bits and crappy resolution the output for many of the good games actually looked and played well back then and even now. But I’d say about 90% of the NES catalog was garbage back then and still is now.

Og castlevania is awesome, I gave it a try in an emulator after playing Bloodstained:Curse of the Moon (made by the original developer, and very reminiscent of castlevania)

NH is one of the worst games I’ve ever played

apotheotic, do gaming w Let's discuss: Animal Crossing

ACNH could have been so incredibly good, but there’s so much low hanging fruit, qol-wise, that they seem to have intentionally not addressed.

I heard some airy fairy info about how they added frustrating aspects to encourage players to take a break but its honestly nonsense. Bulk operations have so much friction, playing the game in multiplayer removes such a great deal of functionality to the point where it’s just not fun to have people on your island.

In fact that’s the part that frustrates me the most, they had mini games and such in a previous entry for multiplayer fun times! Why can’t we have stuff like that in ACNH? Truly baffling.

It did get me through lockdown though, so +1 for that.

Dinkum was a great reskin/reimagining of this genre

YodaDaCoda, do gaming w Let's discuss: Age of Empires

We got AoE 1 on the computer as a demo when I was a kid. Think the CD came in a cereal box or something. Played through the same beginner campaign a bunch of times. Was fun.

AoE2 changed the game though. Absolutely amazing. The controls felt so much more fluid and the campaigns were so much fun to play though and see the story. We managed to network all the family computers and would have big family multiplayer battles against the computer (dad carried us kids though).

My brother loved Mythology and while it looked pretty I never really got into it. Something about it felt slower paced and kinda hand-holdy.

AoE3 was just weird. You had a home base that persisted through games, how is that fair? And playing cards were involved somehow? The ragdoll physics was cool though.

AoE4 is okay I guess. I participated in the beta program because I was so excited for them to produce something that might surpass AoE2 but… Naah. It just doesn’t have the right feel to it. Very pretty though. They keep coming out with new content but until it feels right (something about the way the window scrolls and zooms) I just cant enjoy it.

I just didn’t 20 hours so far on it

What I don’t like is that you need to finish the day for it to save

Also the wording about what happens to crops at the end of season should change

But otherwise, it’s something to do, but it is getting a bit click and pointy really. I wish you should pair up with characters more and walk around with then

friendlymessage,

At least on Android, there is a save function in the menu. Doesn’t that exist on Desktop as well?

Auzy,

I don’t think so. Maybe I’m missing something?

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

No, it’s a mobile-only feature. On desktop the game only saves once the day ends, either via bed or exhaustion.

Have another play session with my partner planned tonight! We play with all kinds of mods and the sheer amount of them means that we’re nowhere near to having done and seen everything yet! Especially with the new content update that came out a couple months ago, which is amazing in itself, honestly.

I actually really struggled with making money at the beginning, how did you do this?

CinnamonTheCat,
@CinnamonTheCat@beehaw.org avatar

When did you last play? I literally just played the game and sometimes just didn’t place some services- I think a good tip rn is just advance from a small city quickly, as later in the game it’s broken and gives you unlimited money as your people somehow make insane amounts of money. But in the early game advancing is your friend to gain cash from the advancements

Fisch,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

That’s what I meant with at the beginning. As soon as I started making more profit than losses, it became very easy, which also made it kind of boring.
