refurbishedrefurbisher,

Hard to replicate the typing experience on the Deck when the hardware doesn’t have dual trackpads.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

And MGS IV

Also RDR is playable on Switch emulators nowadays.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

At 480i. SNES used 240p, which is technically not standard NTSC, but compatible. Nintendo called this “double strike”, since each field would display in the same location.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

It is 59.94 fields per second, translating into 29.97 FPS. Interlaced video is fun. Reason why it’s not a round 60 or 30 FPS is due to maintaining compatibility with black and white sets.

240p uses each field as a frame, though, while still maintaining compatibility with NTSC. This is what most consoles pre-6th generation uses (same with PAL, but 288p at 50 FPS)

refurbishedrefurbisher,

If they want to gain back support, they could open source the engine.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

I only played the first one, and it just dodn’t have as much of an impact on me as I was hoping for. OMORI on the other hand…

refurbishedrefurbisher,

Tied with Chrono Trigger? That’s some insanely high praise. Why do you say that, exactly? I’ve never played Chained Echoes, so just curious. Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all time.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

OMORI is incredible. The gameplay is okay (typical JRPG stuff), the music is okay (I’ve heard better in other games), but the storytelling is some of the best in all of video games, up there with Silent Hill 2 and 3.

The Binding of Isaac is an incredibly addicting game. It’s basically rougelike 2D Zelda dungeons, and upgrades stack on top of each other. It’s the game that I have the most hours in on Steam (specifically the much better-programmed remake, Rebirth). The DLC is great as well, adding a ton of content. Its replayability is damn near unmatched.

Super Meat Boy is just a really fun, fast paced 2D platformer, that is challenging, but fair. The controls are some of the best of any 2D platformer out there, beating out both Super Mario World and Yoshi’s Island IMO.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

Goddamn. I’ll have to try it out. The story is by far the most important part of any JRPG for me, though.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

Why do they dynamically link libs instead of static linking, or better yet, distributing an AppImage?

I released my first game on Steam and got rid of impostor syndrome!

My first game Mushy Score is out on Steam! I have been creating games since I was a child but never felt like a real game dev. Now I finally have a game that I can show to other people.

Mushy Score is a 2D Roguelike where you fight against endless waves of enemies. Collect points and try to get a high score! I am super exited for the release !

If you like similar games go check it out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2480740/Mushy_Score/

@games

refurbishedrefurbisher,

You got rid of imposter syndrome? Like, for everyone?

refurbishedrefurbisher,

Probably. Sony provided upstream Linux with drivers for their controllers, and have been for a while now. The controllers arguably work better on Linux than they do on Windows without third party software/drivers.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

I’m 70% sure that Sony just ported their drivers almost directly from Orbis (the PS4/5 OS) since Orbis is based on FreeBSD, which is POSIX-compliant. Windows is not POSIX-compliant, so they’d need to do more work porting it over.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

You can emulate via software or hardware nowadays.

If you want accuracy, the MiSTer now has an N64 core that is mostly complete.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

You should also try RetroArch. Very low input lag, although not as low as MiSTer on a CRT.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

Huh? Wheelchair.

What’s going on with that wheelchair?

refurbishedrefurbisher,

The second I heard the tagline “Face Your Trauma Together” during the original teaser, I thought it was going to flop.

Clearly Genvid doesn’t exactly have respect for SH fans or for gamers in general.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

Aside from microtransactions, releasing an unfinished product that broke on day one, and being overall low quality compared to the Team Silent games, they are essentially making fun of trauma and PTSD as a concept. Compare that to Silent Hill 2, which was very respectful in how it handled the concept of trauma and PTSD, and it becomes quite obvious.

The fact that this sticker exists: v2sdwgsi9lxb1Should tell you enough.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

IDK if I can pick just three so I’m not going to; all of these are games that I would consider must-plays for different reasons. If I had to choose, the first three would be my top three, but the rest are in no particular order:

Silent Hill 1, 2, and 3 are all fantastic for their own reasons (I’d recommend starting with 2, then 1, then 3). 1 for it’s fear factor and atmosphere, 2 for it’s thick atmosphere and deep story, and 3 for its disturbing undertones and incredible atmosphere. There are no other games quite like these. There are few games I would consider to be life-changing experiences, but these would be my #1 pick for that type of game, but that’s not to take away from the other games I listed here, many of which are also life-changing. You’re also going to hear the word “atmosphere” a lot more in this comment.

OMORI is fantastic for kind of similar reasons, but some of the best and most emotional storytelling in any game I’ve ever played, tied with Silent Hill 2 and the next game

Saya no Uta is fucked beyond belief, and so worth playing/reading. It will make you feel disgust, empathy, intrigue, and sadness at the exact same time

Chrono Trigger is one of the best games all-around that I’ve played, from the story, to the gameplay, to the art, to the music.

Yoshi’s Island and Wario Land 4, just for the gameplay, level design, controls, and a t m o s p h e r e (happy atmospheres this time). The gameplay with both of these games is just sublime.

Super Mario World: Call of Cthulhu ROM hack by yashum is one of the most unique ROM hacks that I’ve ever played. Has an amazing dark atmosphere, which is weird to say about a Mario game, other than maybe Super Paper Mario. The journey is better than the end for this one.

myhouse.wad (gzdoom-exclusive DOOM II mod) is a mind-bending game with amazing atmosphere and gameplay. A very unique game with equally unique story-telling. Don’t read anything about it, and make sure to play the .pk3 version and not the .wad. Don’t read anything on the Google Drive until after playing through at least once.

Zelda: Majora’s Mask is one of the best games that Nintendo has ever produced. Dark, brooding atmosphere, sadness, probably the best soundtrack that Koji Kondo ever made

Diminish isn’t even a game that anyone can play, but instead, it’s a Let’s Play series on YouTube. It’s a really deep and emotional journey, though, and I would highly recommend giving it a watch.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

You should probably play the other games on the list then.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

Good, but we need video game workers in general to be unionized. Many times in the industry, developers, QA, writers, etc. are treated as gig workers.

Game dev has been seen as a “dream job” by many people, so that makes it that much easier for the people on top to exploit their workers.

Because Nvidia wants an excuse to continue price gouging consumers on midrange cards.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

I’m all for it. It’d be nice if they didn’t preinstall Windows, though.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

Basically everything outside of Steam itself is open source. The only problem is distributing a device with Steam preinstalled, as that requires distribution rights from Valve.

refurbishedrefurbisher, (edited )

Basically exclusively because of Spotify Connect and the network effect. A lot of the music I listen to isn’t even available on Spotify.

I prefer Deezer’s recommendation algorithm. I don’t have experience wity other streaming services.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

Seeing as there’s zero Nintendo IP being used, I find that unlikely. The only company that would have any standing to go after him is Valve, and they historically don’t go after modders and such. You also need to own a copy of Portal to play this game. You basically patch a file in Portal with a bps patch that will “convert” it into a playable N64 ROM.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

Valve has been known to make fangames based on their IP available through Steam. Black Mesa is a good example.

Of course, this would have to be distributed with an emulator, but N64 emulators don’t require any proprietary code to run.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

With Stremio, there is no email verification. You can just put in a fake email in the signup and it will go through.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

It tracks your watch history and play positions, syncs across different devices, and can have a watchlist of both movies and TV shows.

Like, you can start an episode of something on your PC, then continue on your phone.

Also syncs all of your addons, including Torrentio and all of its settings.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

I don’t worry too much about them collecting data. Not much data to collect, and I’m using fake info.

But yeah, you can totally use a guest account.

refurbishedrefurbisher, (edited )

I haven’t used youtube.com to watch YouTube in years. NewPipe x SponsorBlock (polymorphicshade) on mobile, SmartTubeNext on TV, Invidious, Piped, or FreeTube on desktop.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

Can’t wait for it to come out. Hopefully the story is as good as the rest of the game.

Trying to download/export, and convert 1000ish kindle books to get out of amzns ecosystem angielski

Does anyone have any experience with doing this? It’s not for myself, but for someone who isn’t tech inclined. I want to set him up with FOSS to avoid future shitification by azn. I know I need to strip drm, and then convert out of amz formats, but really have no idea how to do this. Any help would be appreciated! -j

refurbishedrefurbisher,

PineNote is one of the only ones I can think of with an e-ink display.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

So… take more control away from the parents, who can decide for their own kids what they should and shouldn’t be playing. Parents are of the gaming generations now; they’re familiar with violence in video games.
