According to MetaCritic, Zelda: Breath of the Wild topped "best games of the 2010s" lists, appearing in 1st place in 17 of these lists. In 2030, what game of the 2020s decade will appear on the 1st place in most of these lists? (It should be noted that we are in the middle of the 2020s decade so this may change as new games get...
As a long-time Stardew Valley fan, I never thought I’d find a game that could capture my heart quite the same way. Fields of Mistria has done just that. I’m honestly blown away by how good this game is...
I probably would’ve already gotten it if wasn’t early access, the possibility of having to restart a game that requires a lot of time commitment is a deal breaker for me, so I’d rather wait until it’s finished. On another note, I’m kind of tired of so many Stardew Valley clones, I wish there were more games like Rune Factory instead with less farming and more RPG and dungeon crawling. I think the only one like that that comes to mind is Sun Haven(?) and that one has been in my backlog since forever now…
That’s like Rune Factory? I thought it was more like Minecraft/Terraria but top-down. It’s been living in my Steam wishlist for a while too now, waiting for a decent discount.
I don’t really mind early access, but it really depends on the game, stuff that is very pick-up and play like roguelikes and shooters is fine, but anything story based or long is a hard pass for me.
Who the hell finds it fun to either waste time trying to lure them into a trap or chase them down? And it’s so much worse against ai because they don’t need to micro manage the way humans have to so it seems whenever I use them they get wrecked under the first half assed volly from any unit. This applies to literally any...
I mean, that’s a problem with the original as well. But it’s not because you live in a primitive way that you can’t take care of your appearance, if anything prehistoric people were already shaving themselves and styling their bodyhair for dozens of thousands of years before writing was even a thing. If you want more realistic characterization then give her sunburnt and rough skin, callouses on her hand, scars on her limbs, that sort of thing…
There’s this concept in game design called game flow, which in simple terms is essentially what happens when a game is both engaging and challenging at just the right amounts to the point where you get immersed in the experience. You can’t have good flow without both some challenge and reward.
That’s why games that are too simple and/or easy are boring. I feel like that’s a very fine line you have to walk if you want to make a “cozy” game. How relaxing is relaxing enough without being boring? You need a minimum of challenge and stakes, because that’s makes good games good.
This is less a sign of “the devs don’t trust the player” and more just plain out bad game design. Maybe the game itself is very obvious (I don’t know, i haven’t played nor do I intend to), but this kind of thing is usually done when the game is obtuse and the developer wants a quickfix instead of actually reworking the entire thing. Then again, if your game is for little children and they can’t figure out how to play it, then there’s something fundamentally wrong with it and maybe you should go back to the drawing board.
Ok? And buying literally any game by EA, Activision, Microsoft, Sony, 2K, Devolver, Epic and countless other companies helps fund the war on Gaza and America’s neo-colonialism and imperialism. Notice I didn’t even mention European companies, because that’s another whole can of worms.
Observations with the LOFAR (Low Frequency Array) radio telescope last year showed that first generation Starlink satellites emit unintended radio waves that can hinder astronomical observations. New observations with the LOFAR radio telescope, the biggest radio telescope on Earth observing at low frequencies, have shown that...
Right? Sports games in general back in the aughts had the best soundtracks of any games, so much edgy rock, punk and metal. I don’t think anything nowadays can compare unfortunately.
You don’t even need to go that deep, just have a quick look at literally any Chinese game on Steam and you’ll notice the vast majority of players are also Chinese. Many times I was like “Oh, why does this game I’ve never heard about has over 10,000 positive reviews on Steam? Oh, game’s Chinese and so are basically all the reviews”, seems to be a trend with these games.
Dive into Odd Realm, a mystical colony sim set in a land of fantasy! Lead your settlers to construct a thriving haven, navigating unpredictable seasons, elusive bandits, unseen horrors, and fabled gods. Every choice etches your colony’s destiny, igniting a saga of adventure, peril, and triumph.
I have many of these colony sims sitting on my Steam wishlist, some from many years ago, but ever since Dwarf Fortress got that graphical rework and launched on Steam they mostly lost their purpose for me. They always felt like “Dwarf Fortress at home” with the advantage being that they had better graphics and were easier to get into than DF, now that’s not case anymore, at least for me, and I really struggle with reasons to ever play some of these instead of DF.
Must suck being one of these devs that wanted to make their own more accessible version of Dwarf Fortress, then a few years later Tarn and Zach announce the update, and now you not only have to contend for attention with RimWorld but also Dwarf Fortress on Steam.
That’s fair, but what I really like about Dwarf Fortress is the complexity, especially the industry chains you can create, some forts can become almost factory like, not to mention the world simulation is unmatched.
Thought this was a fun article to read, wanted to share. I think it’s interesting that as societal and political views at large shift in the 2020s, it’s good to go back and reevaluate how narratives are portrayed even as recently as 2015....
At this point just assume that anything even slightly not “wholesome” is going to be deleted by the mods here. I wouldn’t be surprised if this comment also got deleted for pointing that out.
Not really going to waste my time reading Polygon, but to answer the hypothetical question: I think most people agree it wasn’t a full on Bio/System Shock game, more a corridor shooter, but a decently fun one nonetheless. I think most of the complaints I’ve seen over the years were about some of the political aspects of the writing, not the gameplay itself.
It’s been a while since I’ve watched these, his video on the original is spot on, but I really dislike his takes on Human Revolution, felt like he was mostly nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking, especially the story bits.
it’s less groundbreaking in context than I think people give it credit for.
Are you seriously going to tell me that the open-ended structure of Deus Ex, coupled with the RPG elements and interactive environments wasn’t groundbreaking for the time? There wasn’t anything quite like it back then, so much so it basically created the genre of Immersive Sims as we know it today.
Hell, you could trace basically any first person shooter with RPG elements from after 2000 back to Deus Ex, it’s the gold standard for a reason. The closest thing we had to this kind of game back then was Strife, a Doom clone with a basic quest system and inventory, even System Shock 2 is less dynamic and open-ended than Deus Ex.
There’s an indie game called Shadows of Doubt that does the whole immersive sim in a big hub stuff pretty well. Kind of jank and unfinished, but I think it’s the closest thing I’ve seen in recent times to Deus Ex.
The closest thing we had was the System Shock duology, since both predate Deus Ex. Deus Ex was basically accessible System Shock. Having dialogue trees and NPCs without losing the open-ended nature of System Shock’s more dungeon crawl-y approach was the real selling point.
You’re clearly misremembering System Shock if that’s what you think. Those games were just Ultima Underground with guns, especially the first. Deus Ex was soooo beyond dungeon crawler, it was almost a full blown RPG by modern standards, it had big hubs with multiple NPCs that you could talk, quests with alternate endings that sometimes changed later sections of the game, highly interactive environments, level design with lots of verticality and hidden paths… System Shock had nothing of that.
Really, if anything Deus Ex owes more to Thief in the gameplay department than System Shock, the interactive environments and very detailed level design, even the stealth were straight out of Thief. It clearly has some inspiration from System Shock, especially with the augments, but even those were more useful in ways to allow you traverse the environment than the former. Calling it an “accessible System Shock” is reductive at best.
Yeah, that’s the one. And yeah, the cases can get pretty complicated at times, I’ve had one case for instance where I had to find a person by their description… Except the description was literally their job title and their first name initial letter (or something very similar). I had to go to a gubermint building, hack into a computer and manually cross-reference the health history of literally everyone in town to find the person. And that was just the first step of the case.

Yeah, I kind of agree. I wish they’d make a new Quake or something, Doom is cool and all but this barely resembles it. Eternal was fun, but too goofy and campy, Doom 2016 did it perfectly.
Decided to go back to Dwarf Fortress after a long while, I’ve been basically re-learning the game and trying some !!fun!! stuff I’ve never done before. Funnily enough I think I just built my most successful fortress, outside of a really nasty tavern fight that resulted in the death of two children, one dwarf and their cat (the drunkard literally grabbed the poor sod by the tail and smashed it into a statue to death LOL), everything went rather smoothly. Lots of forgotten beasts passing through the caves, one got in while I wasn’t looking (lol) but was dispatched easily without casualties.
Thinking about building a fort on a volcano next, see if I can do some crazy magma wizardry.
It definitely has a learning curve at the start, if you’re still interested the new version has a tutorial in-game now, I can’t vouch for how good it is because I’ve never used it though. There’s also plenty of quick and easy tutorials online, I learned the basics from this one by Peridexis but it’s rather outdated by now, the wiki has some recommendations on more up-to-date ones.
I don’t even know how I feel about this. On the one hand, it’s great we’re moving away from 4 which was always a shitshow to begin with, on the other hand I have no faith whatsoever 5 is going to be even on par with 4.
