Weirdfish, do games w ‘If it’s the only place to play Mario, you buy it’: Former PlayStation boss reacts to $80 Nintendo games

When I bought the switch I called it my $500 zelda machine.

I also have factorio now.

If a new mario, zelda, or factorio is available on switch 2, I’ll buy one.

adarza,

one summer back in ‘the day’ i was staying at a house that had a snes. guess what the one and only game we played all that summer was.

Factorio?

CarbonatedPastaSauce,

I am cringing in horror at how poorly my factories would run on a Switch. Do you find playing it to be an acceptable experience?

Weirdfish,

It’s the only platform I have to play it on, and switch doesn’t support the new space age expansion.

It did get many of the 2.0 updates, like the extended belt reader, free circuit wires, and all inserters are filters.

As far as acceptable, I love it. I’m sure I can’t build the crazy 10k science per minute monstrosities I’ve seen on youtube, but I’ve never really run into an lag issues with the bases I’ve built.

Zedstrian,

I imagine it’ll run much better on the Switch 2, given how well it runs on my Steam Deck, though I imagine that it would take a lot of adjustment to get used to using joystick controls versus the touchpad controls of the Steam Deck. Perhaps however the new ‘mouse-like controls’ work will be more helpful in that regard, but I can’t imagine even that would match the precision of a trackpad.

Don’t intend on supporting Nintendo’s crazy price increases myself, and will only get a Switch 2 if a way to hardware mod it becomes available, but I think it’s a bit ironic that the one non-first party game someone would specifically want to play on the Switch is also the one that not only never goes on sale, but also got a price increase.

CarbonatedPastaSauce,

And even with the increase it’s still a freakin’ bargain. Such a good game!

Sounds like someone thinks there is only one choice, buy or don’t.

Needlessly absolute take. Yes, there’s going to be parents, who’d rather pay extra than look into what other games they could give their kid, as well as loyal Mario fans, who will pay pretty much any price. But there’s obviously also players who do weigh up their options based on price, and who will make different decisions when they have to decide between two titles, when one of them is cheaper. Especially with the additional invest for a new console and the more dire economic situation, I could see many players not buying into the Switch 2 at all.

If Mario is 100x more expensive than it needs to be, and there are millions of games that are just as good for a dime, you don’t buy Mario.

leave_it_blank,

Gamers, be it on console or PC, are dumb. Time has shown this over and over again. Horse armour, overpriced micro transactions, golden cage launchers, games as a service, the list goes on.

There will always be people who buy overpriced stuff or don’t think about what will be in ten years.

inclementimmigrant,

Yeah, just prepare for 100 dollar games across the board WITH all of the shitty monetization at this point, gamers are going to buy their circus, consequences be damned.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I doubt it. Maybe Grand Theft Auto and Mario Kart can get away with charging more, but a lot of games asking $70 aren’t finding many customers willing to pay that price right now.

Kirp123,

Not to mention that other publishers will be watching this closely. If Nintendo gets away with it they will make this the new normal.

nope. they might be counting dumptruckloads of cash, but $0.00 of it will have come from me

Every time I hear a new piece of news about the Switch 2 it’s disappointing. Bummer

DoucheBagMcSwag,

Didn’t you hear? Just buy a switch 1 if you can’t afford or care for the switch 2.

Doug Bowser said it himself

MudMan,

They said it about the DS at the time. It was meant to run in parallel with the GBA as a "premium" thing for adults. They said it about the SNES, too, actually.

This bit of random outrage is fun to me because it's something that has been Nintendo's official stance since the early 90s, but it's swung back around due to Don Mattrick being such a charisma black hole that what used to be the natural, go-to response to "how come the new, more advanced version is more expensive" has now become a genuine snafu.

PR is not about reality, it's about perception.

warmaster,

Nintendo greedy? Always has been.

MudMan,

And yet the anger is new. Again, it's about perception, not reality.

Didn’t you hear? Just buy a switch 1 if you can’t afford or care for the switch 2.

You can also buy this controller and use it with PCs for an authentic emulation experience.

warmaster,

It’s hilarious that it will work with any game on the Steam Deck.

SuperSpecialNickname, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is only compatible with GameCube games, Nintendo says

That makes no sense to me, it has ZL button from what I’ve seen and that leads me to believe that it’s more like a pro controller

MudMan, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is only compatible with GameCube games, Nintendo says

So it seems this may just refer to "official support" and the piece of news is at least misinformation-adjacent, but it does make me wonder if there is any forwards compatibility with the Pro Controller. There are plenty of solid alternatives for Switch 1 and that wasn't particularly picky about taking in third party devices.

Not sure if anybody has brought it up in the news deluge.

Khanzarate,

Yes it has Bluetooth support and, naturally, USB C.

It’ll continue to take anything that supports those, and that’ll include the switch 1 pro controller, since it supports those for other devices.

MudMan,

That's nice. Gamecube replicas are a bit of a niche case, but there are plenty of expensive fight sticks that would be great to use if compatible. I guess we'll know for sure once it's out.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Yes it has Bluetooth support and, naturally, USB C.

Even regular ass USB keyboards work with Switch. Usually not for control input but typing search terms in the e-Shop, for example.

atrielienz, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is only compatible with GameCube games, Nintendo says

That sucks since it has analog triggers and a lot of people I watch were hoping it could be used for certain shooters.

“We’ve updated this article to note that Nintendo has made similar disclaimers with its previous retro controllers, which have ended up working with other Switch games.”

They’re just not officially supporting it. I hope Reto will informally make Metroid Prime 4 work with this the same way as MP1. I don’t like twin stick controls and mouse controls are not feasible on the go.

“We’ve updated this article to note that Nintendo has made similar disclaimers with its previous retro controllers, which have ended up working with other Switch games. While this is no confirmation that the same will be the case with the GameCube controller, it does at least provide some hope that it won’t be as locked-off as Nintendo says.”

Well at least they got their clicks.

MudMan,

I genuinely can't tell if milking outrage is more prominent in gaming than elsewhere. I guess not, because... I mean, look at the planet in general, but it does feel like gamers got to that state of mind first and do it best, at least.

SpaceNoodle,

The headline is not misleading in any way. That’s exactly what Nintendo said.

otp,

It’s somewhat misleading. It’s not providing the additional background information, and it leads the headline with the claim (not that Nintendo is making a claim).

I don’t think it’s a bad headline. It’d be hard to include all the information in the headline. But if someone only reads the headline (something like 73% of people), they could end up with a mistaken conclusion. And those people will have been lead in that direction (so, mislead).

SpaceNoodle,

I think it would be bad form to put their speculation on the headline.

otp,

To clarify, I don’t think the writers did anything wrong. The headline will be misleading because Nintendo’s being somewhat misleading.

I don’t know how much the headline could be improved, if at all.

Nintendo says NS2 GC controller will only “officially” support GC games

Or if they can’t quote “officially”, they could quote “only”. Which could arguably be more clickbaity, but also clue in a casual reader that there’s more to what Nintendo officially says.

shinratdr, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is only compatible with GameCube games, Nintendo says
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

I doubt it. Why wouldn’t it just be a modified Pro controller like every other classic controller they’ve released. My guess is they are just managing expectations that it won’t be automatically usable with every game and mapped correctly.

I doubt I’ll ever connect this to my Switch 2, it’s going to be a replacement for the aging used WaveBirds that are hooked up to my Wii. With BlueRetro as the receiver, my guess is they’ll work day 1 or shortly after. For that, they’re awesome options.

JigglySackles, do games w Hades 2 will be a Nintendo Switch 2 console exclusive at launch

Boo you whore.

Glad I have a PC. Again.
