filcuk, do gaming w Steam store pages are now required to disclose kernel-level anti-cheat [2024-10-30]

Does anyone actually have a suggestion for a less intrusive alternative?
Do you realise how difficult and ineffective server-side anti-cheat can be?
Although it would be the only way to actually try and detect someone using a second machine for hacking/inputs.
All of this will become an increasingly uphill battle for the devs.

Write it in language that obfuscates code by default (Rust does that) and then it obfuscates again. Or do it the Valve way. Even though is very easy to crack their anticheat (the hacks and DLL injectors are basically for free both on Windows and Linux), they have other measures in place. E.g. Votekicking players, Overwatch and matchmaking against other hackers.

ReversalHatchery,

where did you read it that rust obfuscates the code?

you want vmprotect and such for that

DieserTypMatthias,
@DieserTypMatthias@lemmy.ml avatar

If security analysts have issues decompiling Rust malware, then it’s obvious that it obfuscates the code. All they could get was an ugly Assembly. You can try it yourself by downloading Ghidra/Cutter/any other compiler.

Don't they mean malware?

GetOffMyLan,

No

averyminya,

I’m assuming the user meant all kernel level anti-cheat is malware

GetOffMyLan,

I’m sure they did and it’s not. Malware isn’t defined by its privileges but what it does.

Vilian,

Spyware steal your data, look the same to me

GetOffMyLan,

How do they steal your data? They also said malware

Sl00k,

I’ve been a heavy competitive gamer for 10 years now, kernel anticheat has been an incredible blessing developed these last few years despite every non-player calling it malware. Meanwhile all the consistent players rejoice and newer players don’t have to deal with constantly wondering if someone’s hacking every single lobby.

You can see just how much this has directly impacted high elo League of Legends players via Riots dev blog after their implementation. The most notable:

more than 10% of Master+ games had a cheater in them.

Would you be happier if it were paid DLC? It’s more fitting as a mod anyway, since the whole thing was very on-the-rails.

Some use the beta branch feature for this but hopefully an official feature makes this more widespread - especially for those games with their big modding communities. I'd rather update the game a bit later when all the important mods also have caught up.

I really, really wanted to like this game. I love the look and feel of it so much but I just needed a clearer bit of hand holding to figure out what I was supposed to do. It's so open ended and I could never really tell if I was on the right track. I love the idea of crawling through vents, interrogating people, sneaking about and putting together pieces of evidence but it was just too overwhelming for me. I wish there was a guide that just explained simply how you're supposed to play but I haven't found one yet.

    yokonzo,

I mean they have made it a bit more player friendly through the updates, theyve even added an auto-route that walks you to the place you set in your map. But you do have a point, though that’s what a lot of people love about the game, it’s just you, in a big city, grasping at straws and trying to figure things out any way you can

    BaroqueInMind,

I thought that was the entire point of this game, which is the primary reason I buy games like this and Elden Ring/Dark Souls: I am a fucking grown adult and don’t need to be spoon-fed shit to me in a video game that was built as a sandbox, just shut up and let me break the shit you created in there and if I need to find help, the entire fucking internet already made content about how to solve it before the game was even released

    NuXCOM_90Percent,

    Different people like different games.

But SoD is very much built around that sandbox style gameplay. Your guide is how you connect the evidence of whatever crime you are investigating.

That said: I think the tutorial is “a lot” but it is well worth doing at least a good chunk of it. They do a great job of teaching you the basic steps for how to investigate a murder and what to do next.

    Novamdomum,
    @Novamdomum@fedia.io avatar

Thanks for that. I might give it another go. I have ADHD and I wonder if that also doesn't help because remembering a lot of names and details is hard for me. My short term memory is really only reliable until I see any random shiny thing. I tried using the evidence board to track literally everything I saw but it quickly became way too ovewhelming. I'll give it another go though I think.

    Katana314,

Same for me. I enjoy the Hitman games, but they have a bit more guidance towards suggesting possibilities for you.

I’d almost like it if I could investigate just as a master hacker that can skip the breaking in portion to try checking XYZ company’s records while sitting at the crime scene, instead of going down a 2 hour rabbit hole at risk of being caught to realize “Oh, that was the victim’s ID, not the killer’s, so nothing I’m investigating has anything to do with the case.”

vahtos, do games w Updates to Free Demos on Steam

Showing free demos as their own line item in the store suggestions feels counterintuitive. As a user, I don’t want this, it just clusters the interface. I want to see the main game and something on it indicating a demo is available.

As for developers, discoverability is something they are always talking (complaining) about. Artificially inflating the sheer number of competing games for visibility seems like an odd choice in that regard.

    Infrequently Asked Questions

    Q. What is the deal with the Demo icon? Is that a plate? A vinyl record?

    A. That classic icon, my friend, is from the days when demos were commonly distributed through the post office, contained in a bound package of game journalism printed on dead trees and imprinted on circular media known as Compact Discs.

    Q. Some demos just appeared in my Steam library. How did those get there?

    A. We’ve made some changes to visibility of demos in the Steam Library, which may effect demos that you played long ago. We’ve tried our best to clean up the demos that we expect you don’t care about anymore, but we may have missed some. You can easily remove those by right-clicking them in your Steam library and selecting manage > remove from account.

    Q. I love free demos. When is the next Steam Next Fest?

    A. Check back on October 14th for the next weeklong Steam Next Fest, featuring hundreds of new free playable demos! You can sign up for a reminder by visiting the Next Fest page now: store.steampowered.com/sale/nextfest

    Donjuanme,

My sentiments exactly. I don’t do many demos, but seeing games on my wishlist that have them, that’s going to be good for the devs and my own curiosity. Win:win:win:sad wallet

    dinckelman,

I wish more games had demos. In the era of 70€ triple-A games, you can’t even get out of the tutorial in 2 hours

    Adalast,

That is actually intentional. They do it to restrict refunds on Steam and consoles.

thingsiplay, do gaming w Changes in Forza Horizon 4’s Festival Playlist and Delisting from Digital Stores

Always sad to see a game getting delisted. But props to the devs to notify us about half a year in advance. Usually these delistings are instant without notification and then its too late for people who want to buy it. Now the game is at a good discount, 80%. If I had interest into the game and there was no FH5 on Steam, then I’d buy it.

Licensing issues with music can easily be patched out and replaced by other music. But what can they do about the cars? I guess a lifetime license for the games is too expensive, so it will be a limited license and then the delisting is only matter of time. Man this sucks.

    theangriestbird,

it’s the car manufacturers that piss me off on this. Why is the license timed? Why isn’t it licensed on a “per game release” basis? What does Toyota lose if the 94 Celica is still driveable in a dead racing game from 10 years ago? It’s clearly a case of game devs having to acquiesce to the demands of stakeholders that don’t understand video games.

Haven’t had a chance to play this patch yet, but I’ll say I’m impressed at how much they are reworking already. Even going so far as to throw out certain hammers for example.

I attempted Trial of Haste pre-patch and quickly realized I stood no chance, neat to see that being adjusted.

Vow of Forsaking got the nerf treatment. Probably for the best.

    RinseDrizzle,

Yeah Trial of Haste felt like a nonstarter for certain builds that weren’t minimaxed for DPS. Nearly had it once, being maybe 10s off the mark (which realistically means I could’ve had it) but not mad about the rework at all.
