I am not a fan of platformers and puzzles, in general, and am not too interested in this concept specifically. But I may end up buying it out of spite for hateful people. I also suggest taking a peek at their previous game Semblance which, although also a platformer, looks genuinely sort of novel to me (granted, as I said, I am not a fan of platformers in general so maybe it is in fact not unique at all). Feel free to take my thoughts with a large grain of salt, this is not really my area of expertise.
I think the devs are making a mistake by reacting interacting the trolls.
They are people frothing at the mouth and sent on that steam page with a political agenda. It seems the devs think they will “change their minds” after they brought the topic of slavery for no reason…
So I will add this to my wishlist check if I can report the posts that are straight up insults or racists and move on.
The trolls in question can’t stand that this game might be successful and there is nothing they can do beside review bombing at release which should trigger Steam’s detection.
Don’t feed the trolls and entertain them with a discussion…
Maybe the devs are acutely aware of the Streisand Effect and using the trolls to boost marketing.
There are numerous examples of boosts in sales when fascists try to villify something. I imagine Kimmel’s viewership has increased even factoring in the markets he’s pulled from.
Nothing generates mass support like Nazis hating on something; nothing destroys faster than a Nazi embrace.
Yeah, it was a bit depressing to see a bunch of YouTubers who did a good job criticizing gaming censorship lately, jumping on this game with the same kind of cancel culture energy as woke crowd jumping on games featuring sexy beautiful women. Honestly, it’s probably for the better than neither modern left nor right have any capacity for libertarian mindsets, because it would just create unequal power dynamics.
The game is about stealing African artifacts from the Western museums, set in the future. Of course, racists hate it and are going to call it ‘woke’. I am personally very intrigued by the concept.
Yeah, reading Steam discussions ruined my day. Just full of racism under the vale of wokeness… Those fuckin’ “Is this game woke?” threads we see everywhere these days might as well be “Does this game have any non-white male characters?”
They are worst that the stupid asses calling for characters to have a gender option in games with a story. I mean, anyone here didn’t enjoy Die Hard because they could not relate to John’s gender or sexuality during all those fun action scenes?
Now, on a totally unrelated topic:
Looking to buy this game, but I wanna know before giving them any money; do the devs prefer a penis or clit in their mouth?
It’s hilarious! In the “is the game woke” thread, someone literally wrote:
To make analogy. In your world/culture its okay for China to steal all our furniture, devices in all western homes if the product is “made in China”. It once belonged to China and could have been stolen…
It is so fucking stupid, because games would be so insanely boring if every character interaction was between straight, white, cis-het men, and no female character could ever pass the Bechdal Test.
Just like with movies and TV shows, I enjoy a variety of games that cover the entirety of the human experience. Why the fuck would I want to limit that??
Before the poster makes any other posts, they must answer the prompt: “Apologies! We’ve been dealing with an influx of hate speech and bigotry, so to clarify your concerns, could you please provide the intended meaning of the word “Woke” in this post?”
I generally use Steam forums/news for relatively niche indie/AA games in the economic strategy/city-builder genres. Rarely do you encounter overly heated discussion with some exceptions around Denuvo use or a particularly intense debate about gameplay approaches.
But I have seen some sections of Steam that honestly look surreal due to the level of toxicity and the overall bad faith tone.
Valve should honestly police this stuff, they have more than enough resources to do so, but they won't since it goes against the "scalability and automation" mantra of modern technology companies.
P.S. I don't consider free speech issues to be relevant in this case. One can always start their own site/forum and spam it with whatever they like. If product owners finds this valuable, they can join the shitbox.
Free speech issues are not relevant because it’s a private company. Free speech is about limiting the government’s ability to control speech, companies are always free to do so for their own reasons on their own platforms. While that can be problematic when you don’t know whether the government is leaning on the companies behind the scenes, what the first amendment is really written to prevent is the overt fascist gestapo tactics the Trump administration is now using to bully their critics.
It is important to understand the constitution and why it was written, so people can act accordingly. It’s especially important when the government is not acting accordingly.
I am not American, I have a completely different perspective on this topic than most North Americans (lived there for a decade, as well as Europe and Asia for many years).
I was using the term in a very broad sense. Think of it as more of an "off the cuff" remark.
I don't know how to make Valve aware of the blatant racism going on. Maybe they only look at twitter and reddit and there needs to be a "shitstorm" about the harassment the devs are facing. It's despicable how it just continues to happen and there doesn't seem to be a "account banned for improper conduct" on most of those fasches.
It’s definitely not just indie games. I was looking forward to the Trails in the Sky remake, checked on its discussion forums, and it’s polluted with overblown “censorship” claims, sprinkled with “Guess the game FAILED cause it went WOKE” cringe.
If only Steam had something like BlueSky’s crowdsourced blocklists. That would be a freeform way of handling the issue.
Just to be clear, “watching” is a bit of a misnomer. In Project Zomboid TVs play programs to dispense lore/world-build, show what’s happening outside the Exclusion Zone, teach recipes and skills to players, improve their mood (mental health is an important part of gameplay), potentially draw in nearby zombies with the light and noise, and give survivors something to do while resting during downtime.
However, it’s all just text - the TV will light up, and if it’s tuned to a live channel or playing a VHS, a new line of text will pop up above it every few seconds. As the apocalypse advances more and more channels will go dark or switch to automated reruns (the attention to detail in this game is just chef’s kiss), eventually leaving looted VHS tapes as the only way to watch most programs.
That said, if the modders used a program to extract subtitles and kept the timings, you could theoretically play the episode at the same time and watch it in sync alongside your character. Here’s hoping someone makes a mod that lets you launch VLC to a second monitor from within the game with the proper timing offsets!
There are so many mods for Zomboid, some of them are staples that never leave my modlist. I have a mod that replaces almost all the headgear on zombies with a headcrab from Half-Life (you can loot and wear the headcrabs too), as well as a couple “occupations” based around a Black Mesa security guard, or an HECU marine.
There’s the whole host of True Music add-ons, which all add actually listenable music to the game, in the form of cassettes, records, or CDs. There is also a collection of mods called True Action, that give you more emotes and animations for your character, such as dancing or actually sitting on a chair or bed instead of just the floor. Tons of vehicle mods too; plenty of real-life vehicles from all kinds of eras (the game takes place in the 90s, so I usually like to keep the 90s aesthetic) but there are plenty of “lore-friendly” ones that have made-up names for the cars. Mods that add interiors to RVs so you can have a mobile base, mods that make you able to add a basement to your house/base, new maps (one I have called Project Russia, and it’s basically the surrounding area outside Moscow, also a huge map)…
I love PZ, really do. I do however also recognize that its playloop is a challenge for many many people to enjoy. The game suffers from essentially needing to know how to play in order to learn how to play. I have yet to find a single one of my friends that enjoyed the game until I sat down with them, watched them play via stream and coached them.
So when you do buy it, pay real close attention to the return window if you aren’t really enjoying it. If you aren’t essentially hooked in an hour, you probably never really particularly enjoy the game.
