Damn this sucks. This game was pretty decent in the beginning. I had fun leveling couple different weapons. I bailed when they reworked the progression system to be more confusing and less rewarding. I’ve been meaning to check it out for nostalgia sake even though recent rework got a horrific reviews and now I don’t even have to bother. RIP

kitnaht,

They “rebooted” it by wiping everyone’s progress and then making paid transactions the way to progress. It was doomed from the rework.

If I can’t play a game offline, OR host my own dedicated server…i just don’t buy them anymore.

Zahille7,

Dauntless was F2P if I remember correctly

Hyphlosion,

I think you know what they meant.

Not when they’re built this way, no.

Damn, another one down. I thought it was a perfectly adequate Monster Hunter competitor, but I guess people looking for that are fully satisfied by Monster Hunter

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Even if it was perfectly adequate, the game may have been doomed anyway. Such is live service.

What?

kitnaht,

Crypto-bros killed it. Literally one of their executives just up and dis-a-fucking-ppeared.

Evil_Shrubbery, do games w Fortune's Run development put on hold because the dev is going to prison

Huh, it might depend on the crime but not having computer/internet access for the entire prison time seems wild. I’m guessing he is not from a country that would allow him to have a normal job whilst in prison (again, depending on crime type).

shalafi, do games w Fortune's Run development put on hold because the dev is going to prison

Next time you want to bitch about everything Trump taking legal years:

My case is about 5 years old now, I have been going through the legal process the whole time I’ve been working on this. I have finally been found guilty and sentenced, and I’m going away next month.

In other news, legal insurance is about $26/mo. Arm yourself. (And it’s not just for suing people or defending criminal charges. Having a legal opinion a phone call away, or a letter written, can be life changing.)

I refunded the game last week because it didn’t capture me like I was hoping. I hope the guy comes out of prison to be a better person, but it sounds like I dodged a big bullet.

Agrivar,

it sounds like I dodged a big bullet.

How?

How did you dodge any kind of bullet, never mind a big one?

Jumpin’ Jesus on a Pogo Stick, not everything is a life or death scenario - you fucking refunded a game.

Denjin,

It’s just a saying, calm down.

Well if it’s going to be unfinished for a while…

Baggie, do games w Fortune's Run development put on hold because the dev is going to prison

I actually respect the hell out of the dev here. Owning up to past wrongs, growing as a person, clear and concise communication, honestly that’s all huge progress.

I haven’t heard of this game before, so Streisand effect? To the judgement system?
On a more serious note people change, and the dev seems remorseful so maybe an early parole won’t be out of the question

Skullgrid,
@Skullgrid@lemmy.world avatar

so Streisand effect? To the judgement system?

they say it is due to a case where they’re kinda admitting to doing something violent and illegal, probably before the development of the game, so probably not

I’ve tried it out. It’s actually a pretty solid early-access game. Excellent atmosphere and setting.

Respect to the dev with being so open with the community.

filcuk, do gaming w Steam store pages are now required to disclose kernel-level anti-cheat [2024-10-30]

Does anyone actually have a suggestion for a less intrusive alternative?
Do you realise how difficult and ineffective server-side anti-cheat can be?
Although it would be the only way to actually try and detect someone using a second machine for hacking/inputs.
All of this will become an increasingly uphill battle for the devs.

DieserTypMatthias,
@DieserTypMatthias@lemmy.ml avatar

Write it in language that obfuscates code by default (Rust does that) and then it obfuscates again. Or do it the Valve way. Even though is very easy to crack their anticheat (the hacks and DLL injectors are basically for free both on Windows and Linux), they have other measures in place. E.g. Votekicking players, Overwatch and matchmaking against other hackers.

ReversalHatchery,

where did you read it that rust obfuscates the code?

you want vmprotect and such for that

DieserTypMatthias,
@DieserTypMatthias@lemmy.ml avatar

If security analysts have issues decompiling Rust malware, then it’s obvious that it obfuscates the code. All they could get was an ugly Assembly. You can try it yourself by downloading Ghidra/Cutter/any other compiler.

atro_city, do gaming w Steam store pages are now required to disclose kernel-level anti-cheat [2024-10-30]

Don't they mean malware?

GetOffMyLan,

No

averyminya,

I’m assuming the user meant all kernel level anti-cheat is malware

GetOffMyLan,

I’m sure they did and it’s not. Malware isn’t defined by its privileges but what it does.

Vilian,

Spyware steal your data, look the same to me

GetOffMyLan,

How do they steal your data? They also said malware

Sl00k,

I’ve been a heavy competitive gamer for 10 years now, kernel anticheat has been an incredible blessing developed these last few years despite every non-player calling it malware. Meanwhile all the consistent players rejoice and newer players don’t have to deal with constantly wondering if someone’s hacking every single lobby.

You can see just how much this has directly impacted high elo League of Legends players via Riots dev blog after their implementation. The most notable:

more than 10% of Master+ games had a cheater in them.

    …as a mod.

    simple,

    That the devs helped create apparently.

    turkalino,

    So can’t play on Xbox :(

    Jestzer,

    Would you be happier if it were paid DLC? It’s more fitting as a mod anyway, since the whole thing was very on-the-rails.
