I play games opposite of the way you do lol. I prefer action. I enjoy challenging platforming and combat, but I find myself zoning out during long cutscenes
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to challenge yourself in a game or play with/against others. There are many reasons we all play. Personally, I’m a huge film buff and love that modern games have started bridging that gap between gameplay and cinematic storytelling. It’s like I can enjoy a 30+ hour film AND interact with it as well!
I used to prefer to just play games solo. There are so many strangers in online games that can be toxic and it’s not fun trying to accomplish a goal when no one’s listening and everyone’s doing their own thing. But I have a childhood friend who won’t play games unless he’s playing co-op with friends, and through him (and a few other close friends), I’ve learned to enjoy co-op games as well.
Plus, one of my other friends is one of those “do-their-own-thing” kind of gamers and we’re constantly trying to get him back on mission. So I’ve learned patience for difficult gamers too. 😉
That’s the best part about games. Everyone gets to enjoy them in their own way. I seem to go through phases of wanting to play alone and wanting the company of others. I haven’t even been able to play games for the past week or so. I’m not gonna force myself though, doesn’t do any good
I forget which platform it was, but one version of that TMNT game was literally impossible because someone fucked up the distance of a jump in one of the sewer levels, making it an impossible jump to make.
I had it on PC as a kid and it was hard enough just reading the codes out of the booklet using that piece of red cellophane to get the fucker to start up lol
I think so. On the working versions you can just walk across but on the broken one it’s too far to do that and jumping makes you hit the ceiling and also not make it. Though it’s been a while since I’ve both played it or seen the little videos pointing out the error on one of the versions.
If you want a more realistic (mechanics mainly, better graphics too but still blocky) and survival focused game, vintage story is great. It’s meant to be very realistic (mechanics, not graphics) so it’s a very different play style than Minecraft.
Need storage? Make a reed basket with 8 slots and doesn’t help food preservation, or make a ceramic storage vessel with 12 slots that decreases rate of food spoilage. Manually build clay storage vessels voxel by voxel, put it in a pit kiln, cover in dry grass, sticks, and firewood and let it cook for an in-game day then you’re good to go.
Food? Better hunt, fish, and grow crops. Make soups, stews, jerky, etc - better make sure you have a cellar with sealed jars of food for the winter though. Also need to balance soil nutrients for crops to grow well.
Leather stuff? Have you to kill animals, skin them, get pelts, soak in limewater/borax and water solution in a barrel, scrape them with a knife, soak in weak tannin then strong tannin (made by soaking oak or acacia logs in barrels of water), then you finally have useable hides.
Charcoal? Have to get a bunch of logs, cut them into firewood (crafting recipe so this part is quick), make a 2x2x2 to 11x11x11 hole and fill fully with firewood, light a fire on top, cover, and wait a day. If it’s not fully covered you’re just left with a bunch of ash instead of charcoal.
Metal tools? Have to get the ore/nuggets, melt over a charcoal or hotter fire, pour into ingot mold, hammer and clip it into the desired shape, cool in water. Want to carry something hot by hand? Better have some tongs or you’ll take damage.
Trying to cook inside? Smoke can build up if you don’t have a chimney - and your fire can go out if it’s raining and the chimney is straight down.
Everything takes a lot more work than Minecraft because it’s meant to be more realistic - but there are so many mechanics that it’s a ton of fun to learn and complete stuff. My current playthrough I’m still sifting sand to get enough copper nuggets/items to make a pickaxe to mine some copper ore to make more tools, but I have a nice little stash of vegetable and meat meals stored in crocks in my hole-in-the-ground cellar/bedroom. Still need to get around to making an actual shelter and cellar, but I want a pickaxe first so I can make a nice sized cellar to preserve food through the winter.
Sounds a lot like the TerraFirmaCraft minecraft mod. Actually, after some light searching, it seems Vintage story was inspired by the Vintagecraft mod which was inspired by TerraFirmaCraft.
I need to find an emulated version of this. Mine was faulty and always glitches as soon as you finished this stage so I never got to see neyond it for more than a few seconds. I’ve always wondered what was there!
Child me could beat it after hours of repeated attempts and running out of continues.
Adult me went back after a decade. The muscle memory was still there and I beat it on the first try. I probably got about an 80% success rate on first attempts now. But level 4 and beyond I’m terrible.
My brother and I played the game so much we were able to beat that stage co-op. It gets much worse later. I learned not that long ago that the reason we were never able to beat it co-op is there’s a bug that prevents the 11th stage from being beatable with two players.
I watch a streamer who mastered speed running dozens of NES games. He says Battletoads was the hardest game to learn. Just getting through the game, not even pushing for a fast time, was extremely challenging. Much harder than TMNT 1 or Ninja Gaiden.
Yeah, for all the difficulty I had with the dam on NES TMNT as a kid, I saw a streamer do it last year I think (I believe on first attempt?) not realizing it was supposed to be difficult. Blew my mind.
Fun fact: that’s one of the easiest levels in the game. It barely cracks the top 10 hardest levels in a game with 12 levels, and only because the first 2 are trivial to lull you into a false sense of security.
Solomon’s Key was the OG escape room puzzle game. The creators must have had so much designing all those rooms while laughing at the future me dying and restarting over and over.
R.C. PRO-AM brought it to a new level. It was really difficult, but super rewarding to progress to new phases of the later levels. They kept introducing new elements as you progressed. That was so much fun.
This was certainly the hardest part of the game due to the controls, but it still pales in comparison to actually difficult games of the era that were designed to take quarters first, provide gameplay later
Duck Hunt anyone ?. I think I got to middle 20s level. I hate that dog for mocking me on my last level before dying. I almost wish there was a game where I could shoot that dog instead of the ducks.
I got all the way through the game once, it reset back to super slow after level 99. I almost lost when that happened because I was so used to it being lightning quick heh.
It’s semi-related. I served in the US Air Force for 20 years. I got to retire and collect a pension at 38 years old, which is some decent passive income, but not enough to live comfortably on. I would have needed a new job to supplement my living expenses with just that income.
(Un)Fortunately, I also got a bit beat up in my 2 decades of military service. The worst (physically) was a motorcycle accident a decade ago, which I never properly healed from. Both my legs are a bit messed up. I’ve had a few surgeries to fix them and I’m finally back on my feet and mobile, but I can’t really run anymore, nor be on my feet for too long. Which is a shame because I used to be extremely active in my youth. If American Ninja Warrior had been a thing in my childhood, I would’ve dominated that show! I was super fit and bursting with energy back then. I never met anyone who could beat me at obstacle courses as a kid/teen.
Mentally, I saw some shit in Iraq and nearly died a handful of times. My base was mortared at least once a week for the 4 months I was there. I once stepped out to my truck to grab something and a mortar shredded the shack I had been in, killing the 3 Army guys in there. I got a mild concussion from that hit, too. That’s probably the closest I came to dying. So I’ve got a bit of lingering PTSD. Nothing too extreme, just a bit of anxiety and insomnia that comes and goes.
Those, plus 2 decades worth of minor injuries and health concerns, convinced the VA to give me the coveted 100% Permanent & Total disability rating, which includes a monthly pay that’s 2x as much as my pithy pension.
My wife also got the rare 100% disability rating from her military service, due to her own physical and mental issues, which also comes with a similar pay as mine. So with our combined passive incomes, we’re not wealthy by any means, but we make enough to live comfortably without working.
I’m 40 now and inherited my childhood home when my dad passed away this year, so my wife and I have the freedom to relax and focus on our own lives without worrying about needing to be somewhere or making money to get by. It’s very therapeutic, and I wish everyone could experience this earlier in their lives. Retirement age keeps getting bumped further back as people live longer, and it’s no fun being retired when you’re too old to do most things anymore.
I have a ton of hobbies that I bounce back and forth between, but gaming has been a relaxing pleasure of mine since I was a kid. My Steam library is over 3,500 games now and I’m always looking to try out new games. Plus, a few friends of mine play weekly in various co-op games together. So I’ve been a pretty active gamer since I retired. And I hope to share a bunch of screenshots of my games and maybe spark some discussion.
Sounds like you two have had plenty of rough experiences. I hope you’ll find happiness in the things that are good now.
As for sports, have you tried pool swimming (or water running)? Might take some getting used to, but since you are practically weightless when floating in the water, many people with issues find it good for their body.
Yeah, one of the benefits of being 100% disabled is that I can get free annual passes to all federal, state, and county parks. And there just so happens to be a nice park with a sandy beach at a lake down the road from my house. So my wife and I take advantage of it all summer long.
I’m a good swimmer, but I don’t really like swimming, so it’s more therapy work for me than anything. But I’ve noticed some improvement since taking up swimming regularly. And that’s what counts in the end.
When I was still in the military, they had me in physical therapy off-and-on for years, and one of the more interesting exercises they had me do was a weightless treadmill. They squeezed me into some tight rubber shorts, then zipped the waist of the shorts into a giant rubber bubble over a treadmill and filled it with air. Depending on the pressure setting, it lifted me up so I was barely touching the treadmill while walking. Definitely took the weight off my knees. But it sucked to work up a sweat while wearing those tight rubber pants. 😖
Someone actually beat Tetris in the NES earlier this year. I mean beat, as in into submission. They got far enough that the game couldn’t handle the progression anymore and crashed.
Which definitely qualifies it for the hardest game. All of the other games everyone is taking about have been beaten multiple times by multiple people. Tetris has been beaten once by one person after almost 50 years.
The version I played stopped after level 15. Not sure if it was supposed to happen, I only managed to get that high once. But I contend that I beat the game.
