They definitely deserve it. The game is awesome.

The shooter? I know of it, I’ve seen Civvie11’s videos on it; haven’t tried it myself yet. In the same vein, I have played Cultic, which is very similar and also a pretty good game (underselling it).

Still playing Slay The Spire and Hexcells as my “podcast games”.

Started Halls of Torment. Really cool aesthetically and some interesting boss designs. Hope it distinguishes itself more from Vampire Survivors though. Especially in having more incentives to keep playing than “numbers go up”. There are some minor story things and unique aspects of some maps that I think could really set this game apart.

Also playing Super Mario Sunshine. Honestly probably my least favorite 3D Mario to date. Besides feeling very clumsy it has some pretty sloppy level design here and there. Still a decent game, but having played Odyssey this game feels very dated.

Halls of torment is really fun. Not only can you keep unlocking stuff for a long time, you can run multiple different builds on each character to keep things interesting.

@Clipboards@lemmy.world avatar

Aw, Sunshine is my favorite title, but I can’t find myself disagreeing on the “Odyssey makes it feel clunky” note. The only point of note for me is that Sunshine feels much more open world than Odyssey does. Probably the nostalgia speaking…

I do feel Halls of Torment does a good job of separating itself from Vampire Survivors. There is actual aiming and an attack button if you want and there's Diablo style gear you can equip before and during runs.

What it is not good at is visual clarity. I very frequently take damage or even die because I couldn't see something over all the stuff my character was throwing out. VS also has this problem but it's lessened by the fact that by that point everything's probably dead in 2 seconds anyways.

For players of Black Desert, how much does Crimson Desert seem to be inheriting from it? I’ve seen some calling the trailer bullshit but I’ve heard that BD is also quite mechanically broad.

Returnal (PC) - Still playing the Tower of Sisyphus even though I beat the game. This is the most impressed I’ve been with a Playstation “exclusive” since the PS2, it’s so good. I bet a lot of people give up on it pretty quick because of the difficulty, but I find it’s less difficult than a Souls game once you get a handle on it.

Horizon Zero Dawn (PC) - I kinda want to get to the part where they explain the robot animals (Dr. Eggman?), but the half-assed combat and boring open world are making me not want to bother.

20XX (PC)- It’s fun, but it’s also giving me a new appreciation for how well-designed the Mega Man games were. You’re not supposed to be hitting your head on the bottoms of platforms in games like this, lmao.

legion, do games w Madden should not be 70$
@legion@lemmy.world avatar

Anytime I consider buying a Madden game, I watch a YouTube video of competitive play for the latest version. It always reveals how garbage the football sim part is. It’s all audibles and hot route spam and exploiting the useless AI in the same ways over and over again.

I’ll never buy a Madden game while all that crap is in there. They should make it so that spamming audibles and hot routes causes players to blow assignments and false start all the time, but the average “competitive” Madden player would probably die from nonstop crying and pants-soiling if EA did anything like that.

Mdotaut801,

That’s actually a brilliant solution. Wanna spam audibles? Flag, false start. Or like you said, botched assignments, perhaps a lineman fucks a protection and you take a sack.

Madden games are such trash, the last one I touched had Peyton Hillis on the cover. I’ve always assumed they’re still ass. I truly don’t know how people play sports games in general.

Katana314,

I don’t know what audibles are, but I’ve become increasingly interested in action-strategy type games that find ways to directly punish players that have high Actions Per Minute, encouraging people to take fewer, more deliberate movements. Kinda like combo rhythm in Arkham, rather than mashing X to attack.

@all-knight-party@kbin.cafe avatar

If I had to pick a favorite FPS... It'd have to be the combination of the Bungie developed Halo games. The story may not always knock it out of the park, but even upon Halo CE's release the art design, world building, and slower paced mechanical leaning was unique and unparalleled in its execution.

I'll always be able to go back and play those games. The mix of ballistic and sci Fi weaponry kept things interesting and options varied. The high time to kill for both the player and enemies made experimentation easier and more rewarding. The enemy AI that never seemed to settle on trying the same strategy twice was the cherry on top that made discussing Halo's "combat sandbox" a household topic in the mouths of video game enthusiasts.

Of all the games that claim a difficulty level that the game was designed for, Halo's Heroic mode will always truly feel like what Halo was meant for. Challenging, but loose enough that you could mix up your loadout and approach, and make up the imperfections of your plan on the backend through execution. Absolutely an experience where I can say it is fun to lose, because there's always another cleverly intriguing idea for you to try and solve the combat puzzle with.

And a final shout-out to Bungie for creating some of the only games where it really feels like you're right at home with a controller in hand. Many shooters can feel pretty good with a controller, but only Halo's deliberate pace and seamless bullet magnetism make the walls melt away between the imprecision of joystick aiming and my mechanical intent.

And the online community these games bred is its own whole set of five paragraphs I won't type now. Hats off to Halo.

I wish I could get into no man’s sky but it just bores me. Similar to everyone else who don’t like it, I quickly got tired of everything being so similar everywhere. But I guess it’s good for people who like seeing random animals.

eRac,

NMS and Starbound struggle from the same issues. Infinite tiered worlds end up feeling the same, but also remove all meaning from the exploration. In Minecraft or Terraria you aren’t going to be flying to a totally new place in five minutes, so you want to get to know your surroundings and put down some roots.

Travel time and not having tiered world progression makes the player care about where they are at instead of seeing it as a stepping stone.

swab148,
@swab148@lemm.ee avatar

I have over 1k hours in NMS, and I totally agree. Also, planets need more biomes.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

It could totally use new biomes. I have some genuinely cool ones. But for every cool one there is another 10 that is just “Rocky with Odd Trees and some sort of environmental hazard”

eRac,

More biomes don’t fix the fundamental flaw in the design. It treats planets the same way Raft treats islands. They become purely a resource hunt for the player, no matter what skin they have.

Raft gets away with it by having your base travel with you, being incredibly hostile, and being short enough that the loop doesn’t get tiring.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I think part of it is that it’s very easy for me to get immersed in the game. Like right now I’m playing as a merchant with my cargo ship I bought. Which is fun to roleplaying, especially when I have friends playing with me
