Replace drive with simply “travel” and you have every rpg in history, no?

I’ve finally got and sat down to play Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

And I had not played since around release when I beat the game. I will say this: If this game had come out in this state - including the content from the xpack - I would have loved it. It’s still buggy and janky, but little enough to be funny instead of grating. All the new interactions they added like romances visiting you is amazing and adds a lot of details and atmosphere, and the new story being far more on-rails helps so much in establishing and keeping tension.
My one big criticism I’d still have is for how much the game sometimes struggles against it’s underlying design. The whole map being a city feels weird, because like the countryside in Witcher III, vast areas of it feel dead and empty. Luckily with the xpack being centered on the very dense and compact Dogtown, that is largely solved for the new content.

8/10, would recommend if you enjoyed Cyberpunk 2077.

Ashtear,

Having played through the PL story, I didn’t like the overhauled skill system as much as I’d hoped, but I still want to go back through the main story again. There are still some old sidequests I never got around to as well.

OOTL here probably before my time mind explaining?

Stamets,

In the first Metal Gear Solid there was a character named Psycho Mantis who had a lot of psychic/mind reading gimmicks. One such way of doing so was to input read everything from your controller and blocking all of your attacks. Another way was reading your memory card and talking about the games you play, name dropping them specifically and talking about genres. All of that is really clever on its own but to get around his input reading you had to plug the controller into the second player slot as he wasn’t able to read that “mind”.

state_electrician,

He also commented on that, just nicely done overall.

FlihpFlorp,

That is really cool

Hazmatastic,

In addition to what the other user said, at one point he makes it so only Player 2 can control your character, so you either needed to run to the console to switch your controller port or pick up a second controller if you had one on standby.

He also tries to make you think your console shut off. Old tvs commonly used blue/green/black screens that said the name of the selected input port at the top, like VIDEO 2. This fight had a part where a blue screen came up that said HIDEO 2 at the top, a nod to the creator Hideo Kojima. Many players thought their consoles turned off and tried to reboot them… effectively erasing unsaved data. It only lasted a few seconds though, so most people realized before it was too late.

He also mind controls your companion, but that’s a bit more common to see.

I feel like there’s a good chance he loves his friend and that’s why he built it. I also think there’s a good chance some part of that castle will intentionally kill his friend while he laughs maniacally.

And he could love his friend without being in love with his friend.

A few years later… Eternal Darkness:

youtu.be/RSXcajQnasc

6daemonbag,

That was extremely confusing to watch without context. What’s happening?

Donut,

The game made you think there was something wrong with your game or TV by showing fake effects. Some of them aren’t really relatable anymore due to their age, but the top comment shows you all the timestamps and what the effect was.

Shit was crazy.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

The game actively messed with you. About 1/2 through it would pause and throw up a “Thank you for playing the demo! Look for the full game coming soon!” That sort of thing.

anguo,

There’s also a moment in Inscryption (on PC at least), that comes to mind. Quite a few years later, though.

800XL,

It got me. It was really cool what the outcome was tho.

PaulieDied, do gaming w Never understood this

At least Vice City had fun missions like dropping bombs in trashcans with the world’s most fickle RC helicopters

pfannkuchen_gesicht,

“fun”… yeah, not exactly a word I’d use to describe that mission.

otp,

Not sure if they fixed it in the PC port, but I enjoyed it when I played it last. I think I failed the mission only once, if at all?

I imagine they reduced the number of enemies or their aggro range, or raised the timer by a ton

HappycamperNZ,

I suckered at that mission.

Yet went great flying helicopters later.

Would try again

OfficerBribe,

That’s San Andreas. I loved all their missions and even though they also could be reduced to only, driving, flying and shooting they all felt distinct and memorable.

Invading Madd Dogg’s mansion and stealing lyric book and delivering it back OG Loc who had a party in your hood was fun. Stealing jetpack for a hippy, burying alive someone in construction site while they are in portable toilet, doing heists with Catalina, all that was fun.

I can’t seem to recall a single GTA 4 or 5 mission / moment truly memorable besides the line “Causin, let’s go bowling”. Maybe it’s all related to when I played SA and probably my memory was better then.

PaulieDied,

Your memory may indeed be a bit flaky, because that mission (demolition man) is quite definitely from Vice City :)

I agree with the sentiment of your post though

OfficerBribe,

Thought you meant New Model Army mission which also feature RC heli, bombs and barrels :)

I remember not knowing how to activate magnet and thinking that mission is impossible.

The meme makes it seem like it was a dumb gimmick for 9 year olds. I still think it's one of the coolest things ever. I wish i would've appreciated more at the time, but i was busy mashing buttons instead of reading dialogues.

Tarquinn2049, do gaming w Never understood this

This is every game for the people that skip dialog and cutscenes.

Now do a recap of a TV show, except skip all the parts where they aren’t shooting a gun or stuff isn’t exploding. I don’t get that TV show, nothing had any context and there was no motivation or lessons to learn, stuff just randomly exploded from being shot at.

otp,

The Office would be pretty short

Tarquinn2049,

Even the most shooty->explodey TV show there is would be pretty short if you skipped all the good parts.

MonkderZweite,

Independence Day.

Sorgan71,

Its a game, not a movie

Soggy,

So play space invaders if you’re fully uninterested in the interactive story.

GTA is not the last of us, its selling point is not its story

I remember playing MGS4 on the PS3 when it came out, and I was so pumped when Psycho Mantis made an appearance.

I had just got the console, so I didn’t have any save data for him to find. The controllers that came with it didn’t have dualshock either, so he couldn’t make my controller move.

In the end, Mantis really just seemed like a confused old man, which honestly fit pretty well into that game. There were a lot of themes about old soldiers aging out, I mean Snake’s body is literally betraying him. But Psycho Mantis’ domain was the mind, so it does seem fitting that he had a senior’s moment with me.

SO YOU LIKE TO PLAY CASTLEVANIA?!

philoko, do gaming w I don't know if I have the strength to do it

Not in souls games, those little shits are the worst.

dditty,

Came here to say this as well. And often there’re two dogs at the same time that stagger you repeatedly. I love gank

Boingboing,

Exactly. Fromsoft dogs can burn in the darkest pits of hell for eternity.

TwoBeeSan,

BURN THEM

What’s your most hated version? For me it’s the bloodborne dogs and those big mini boss dogs in ds3.

philoko,

Probably Bloodborne just because I feel like it had the most dogs and they were always in the worst places.

TwoBeeSan,

That cemetery entrance especially.

rab,
@rab@lemmy.ca avatar

First game that came to mind for me. It’s crazy, you just beat a boss easily then suddenly you’re butt raped by like two dogs.

RealFknNito,

That’s a core staple of the game and always have been. Last I checked it was from them censoring pro Ukraine messages.

gmtom,

No it was them proposing changes that they were saying would make the grand easier but would objectively make it worse for everyone who isn’t getting 10kill + game every game (and a 10 kill game is pretty rare even for good players) but really that was the straw that broke the camels back and it was backlash fro. Years of shitty practices.
