theunknownmuncher, do games w Microsoft Still Can't Say How Much the ROG Xbox Ally X Will Cost Due to "Macro-Economic" Conditions, Despite Announcing Release Date and Availability Details(Leaked prices $549.99/$899 for Ally/Ally )

Oh its just another steam deck clone lol

Would I be able to play my entire existing steam library on this or…?

Anissem,
@Anissem@lemmy.ml avatar

I want a SteamDeck 2 so bad I’ve been eyeing these clones.

theunknownmuncher,

I have the original and passed on upgrading to the OLED. It really hasn’t shown much age at all, yet. I’m not really playing AAA or demanding titles on it, anyway, and it works perfectly for all of the games I do want to play on it. I figure the limiting factor will be the battery, and that seems to be just as good as it was new.

The clones aren’t acceptable replacements to me, they are more of handheld-consoles than handheld-PCs. If it doesn’t have touchpads, I don’t want it, period.

Anissem,
@Anissem@lemmy.ml avatar

I also have the original and really should just be happy with it as it suites my needs. Never had an OLED screen so it’s mostly just that I suppose. Was debating the screen upgrade as well but the install video was a bit much for me. Going to keep my money for whatever hardware is next for Valve. Really would love to see Index 2 this year.

Dremor,
@Dremor@lemmy.world avatar

Until recently I’d have agreed with you, but some recently released games (like E33) are either locked to very low settings (and still has bad framerate despite that), or even run like shit (Sword of the Sea) even on low.

So yeah, I’m kinda feeling the need for an upgrade right now, and as much as I hate Microsoft, depending on how it will cost I may be tempted… If it runs Bazzite well.

theunknownmuncher,

I dunno, I don’t play these games. The most demanding game I play on steam deck is Oblivion Remastered which runs fine with upscaling/framegen and lowish settings. The nostalgia factor makes low settings totally fine for this game, too, so its not a big deal. Anything game where I want great graphics and performance, I’ll just play on my desktop.

For $900 you could literally just build a decent desktop, but you do you

Dremor,
@Dremor@lemmy.world avatar

I do already have a pretty powerfull desktop already (5800X3D, 32 Go RAM and RX 6800), but I just love the Deck form factor.
Especially that now I can play at work, which makes my noon brake a lot less boring. It is kinda harder to bring my desktop around 😅.

frezik,

Clone of a clone of a steam deck that already wasn’t selling well.

oxysis,

It’s almost like people trust Valve and don’t trust ASUS

sheogorath,

In places where Steam Deck isn’t selling officially, the ROG Ally has been selling like hotcakes.

NOT_RICK,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

IIRC yes it can run steam games

theunknownmuncher,

Thanks, I literally just looked this up and saw that is supposedly the case. That’s very surprising to me. At least it has that

NOT_RICK,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

Microsoft seems to be throwing in the towel as far as driving people to their storefront is concerned. They’ll be putting out all their games on anything that can run them.

theunknownmuncher,

I’d argue this is not really the case, and their strategy has shifted to increasing the price of actually “owning” games to be a premium experience, ie all their new games are now $80, making subscription prices seem more attractive

Aielman15,
@Aielman15@lemmy.world avatar

They rolled back the $80 increase when they noticed that people weren’t going to buy Outer Worlds 2 at that price point. They then confirmed that their games will stay at $70 for the foreseeable future (ie. until a bigger player normalized $80 games).

NOT_RICK,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

They walked back the $80 price point, but I definitely agree they’re trying to figure out ways to push people to gamepass. They just keep stepping on rakes

ZoteTheMighty,

Yes, but since it’ll run Windows, it’ll have half the battery life and half the frames at the same time!

@steal_your_face@lemmy.ml avatar

Supposedly its a slimmed down version of windows, but yeah still windows 🤮

sculd, do gaming w The Elder Scrolls Online Dev's Unannounced MMO Was Doing Well and Even Scaling Up as Xbox Cancelation Blindsided Staff

For more context, Bloomberg also reported on this:

Xbox Executives Were Blown Away by an Upcoming Game. Then They Canceled It.

bloomberg.com/…/microsoft-s-xbox-cancels-blackbir…

No paywall version: archive.ph/daYYd

But Blackbird’s cancellation was particularly shocking because it had blown away executives at Xbox just a few months ago. During the demonstration in March, Spencer was enjoying the game so much that Matt Booty, the head of Xbox Game Studios, had to pull the controller away so they could keep the meeting going, according to two people who were in the room.

This is a game that even Spencer was enjoying and then they just cancelled it. I have no word.

Manapany,

I will play the devil advocate here, but a mmo in this economy ? Very little chance to succeed event if it’s good. I’m not saying canceling it was a good call, we will never know. But I can understand that being blow away is maybe not even enough for a live service to be good.

Nighed,
@Nighed@feddit.uk avatar

We don’t even know it’s business model, they all want live service games right?

Feels strange, especially for a dev that has actually made a modern and (apparently) profitable MMO.

Midnitte,

I mean, WoW still chugging along - it makes so much money from cosmetics they could probably ditch the subscription fee…

Manapany,

Yeah and good job trying to compete with that !

Midnitte,

Well Microsoft owns Blizzard, so I guess they don’t really need to compete

Manapany,

Of course they compete even if they are the same company. For a game to be profitable it need to attract consumers if you take it from another of your product that not good. Even more reason to shut it down imo. Why bother create a new IP a new community and risking to loose big, when you can put resources on your other product that already have that.

sculd,

The MMO market is still big, just not as big as its used to. A MMO by a successful team has a much better chance than most games.

The graphics are much better tbh

pennomi,

I’m not a huge fan honestly. I think the stylized graphics are a better fit for the genre, and you get into uncanny valley a lot faster with realistic graphics.

But I mean, that’s just MY taste, I’m not going to tell anyone else what to think.

redhorsejacket,

Higher fidelity for sure, as one would expect when comparing games released 10 years apart, but idk if it’s “better” per se. Of course this is totally subjective, but I feel like there’s no style to inZoi, unless we define “generic AI output” as a style.

tehWrapper, do games w EA's Skate Gets Microtransactions Before Its Release Date
@tehWrapper@lemmy.world avatar

You can spend real-world money on a virtual currency called San Van Bucks, which in turn is used to buy cosmetic items.

I hate this but if it’s just cosmetics and the game price is fair I’ll be ok with it. I know the price is going to be a full on AAA release and they will still cram this into it… but I can hope.

Cris16228,

It should, according to other, be free to play

MudMan,

The price is nothing, apparently the game is free to play.

It'd be pretty suprising if it didn't have microtransactions.

saltesc,

lol, imagine a studio developing a game for half a decade and then just sharing it out.

“Don’t tell our staff, but it was a labour of love and they’re all being let go because we’re out of investor funds. Also don’t tell the investors. Or the publisher. In fact don’t say anything until we’ve made it to Montenegro.”

MudMan,

Man, that's a fair point. If you want to be mad at something be mad at the five year dev cycle into an early access launch. I'm not even saying it's the devs or EA's fault. Making games is hard. And expensive. But definitely hard.

BRING THEM TO PC, COWARDS

Wootz,

It’s not the news you’re looking for, but you deserve to know about OpenGOAL nonetheless.

It’s a project that aims to revive the programming language that the Jak & Daxter series was written in. They’ve mostly succeeded in porting the first game, and somebody has already made mods for it.

Now port them for real, cowards.

They just made Space Marine 2. Great campaign and the most immersive Warhammer 40k game yet imo. As far as the look and feel of the world they really didn’t miss once. 40k is an old IP with A LOT of details and to just consistently nail those details is really a Herculean feat.

The gameplay loop isn’t exactly my cup of tea but it isn’t bad.

I don’t know who else I would pick to do this project tbh.

Not quite enough to quite believe just yet. Been burned too many times with this franchise.

Kefka. That’s why. He is the only villain to win by losing. He got what he wanted and drove everyone into his hand. He is by far the most cerebral villain in the franchise. So many stories leave out that having a phenomenal big bad is what makes a hero a better hero.

I’ve been thinking about this while I switch back and forth playing Elden Ring’s DLC and Infinite Wealth.

In Elden Ring my motivation is simply that they are in the way and I want to go through them. The excitement of defeating someone is only strengthened by how many times I didn’t before I finally do.

Infinite Wealth, on the other hand, introduces complete assholes you want to beat up and then you get to. Which is just way more cathartic and the build up is always going to be the same for nearly every player, because the bad guy is actually shown doing shit most people hate so you start to actually hate them and want to defeat them.

The character roster for this game looks so generic and boring.

dotesports.com/…/all-concord-characters-every-fre…

You have the choice of:

-Cylindrical yellow robot (arguably this is the most original and interesting design) -Woman with puffy sleeves -Woman with box on head -Man with goggles and winter jacket -Old Woman -Woman with pauldrons -Generic Woman -Green woman with ears -Man with hat -Pink robot -Mushroom -Green man with shit on arms -Woman with sphere on head -Blue and Red man -Generic Man -Generic Woman 2

Like, I’ve hardly played overwatch but at least I can tell from afar what most of the characters do from looking at them. Clearly, in overwatch, Giant knight with hammer is a melee tank, clearly the ninja guy with the sword is mobile and and has some melee ability, clearly the lady with the sniper rifle is a sniper, clearly the angel is a healer, clearly, the lady with the jetpack can fly and is support, etc.

Applying this logic to concord, the BEST I can guess is that Woman with pauldrons is a tank, otherwise the design is so ass, I really can’t even tell.

Get a design department and/or let them do their job Sony.

TheDarksteel94,

I agree. Someone said some time ago that players should be able to recognize characters by their silhouette alone. That’s definitely not the case here.
