Good: Nice special effects, nice wardrobes, nice sets, the ludicrous violence fits right in with the universe, and particularly the performances from the actors are very good. At least visually, it looks way better and the effects look way more convincing than 3 Body Problem, to use another recent show as a comparison.

Bad: apparently the show disregards New Vegas lore (personally idk I never played it), I think the editing is super bad, the story is average.

    Witch Spring R

    Apparently this is an old series with a few other titles? I had never heard of it before.

    Key features: cute tone, anime styled, Japanese/Korean voiceover, 3rd person travel, JRPG turn based fighting, lots of things to grind and craft for making items and upgrading things, visual novel style dialogue, low stress mood while playing

    There's a lot of good about it. Particularly I think the lead Japanese voice actress is good and the overall presentation of how screens transition, the flow of gameplay from section to section (exploration, story, combat, crafting, minigames) are executed well.

    I am only about two hours in but I find myself feeling satisfied with just that much play. It's less of an indictment on the game itself and more me feeling that the game is not personally for me. While the polish is nice and the relaxed feeling to WSR is very pleasant, I prefer stories with more tension and conflict.

    Age of Wonders 4

    Very nice polish, horrible tutorial, hated it immediately for reasons I am not even sure about. I have played too many 4x games, I guess. It struck me as a game that wasn't bringing something new to the genre while also not excelling in a specific area either.

    If you liked this game, try to sell me on it. I still have it installed and am open to changing my opinion on it.

    Someone told me this a week ago and I think it's a perfect summary of what happened:

    disliking cyberpunk is an opinion people who don't form opinions have. I'm sure there are people who had glaring technical issues ruin their playthrough and that's fair. But for most of them it's just a fear of clowns/ hatred of pineapple pizza mouth sound they can make.

    I have been playing Phantom Liberty a lot. I've enjoyed it more than Starfield and BG3.

    Before PL came out, I had started playing Sea of Stars. But it was extremely difficult to get into. Besides the S+++ tier pixel art, I thought the writing was poor: boring characters, bad dialogue, bad worldbuilding all made worse by slow pacing. I am gonna revisit this game sometime in the future I guess, though I don't understand its appeal yet.

    Also I played Armored Core 6 for a few minutes and died to the tutorial mission helicopter like 10 times in a row. I guess some people find that fun, lol.

    Ignoring the second part of Blamemeta's comment, the first part is correct: Chinese in the context of this article isn't a race, it's a nationality.

    finthechat,
    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    I hope you're asking in good faith. I'll try and give you a response as tl;dr as possible here.

    Racism: hating people due to their ethnicity

    Not racism: criticizing people (even of a single nationality or ethnicity) because of their politics

    In the context of this article, most people in the comments are expressing privacy concerns over China controlling a larger percentage of the gaming market, and thus increasing the risk for demanding more data from the users installing that software on their machines. If anyone here were expressing racist concerns about this, people would be making disparaging remarks about yellow skin color or narrow eye shape, or something like that.

    Furthermore, incorrectly identifying racism where there is none actually detracts from the actual anti-racist sentiment - in fact, the one I believe you hold - by muddying the definition of what is and isn't actually racism.

    Actually, you don't have to imagine.

    finthechat,
    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    It just wasn't that good. Not terrible, but very bland. I put 30 hours in but finally stopped when I realized I wasn't having fun, I was only chasing the idea of fun.

    I don't even like DND and I thought BG3's first act put the entire story of Starfield to shame.

    Now I'm playing through Phantom Liberty and loving the hell out if it.

    finthechat,
    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    Lol the same thing happened to me the first time I tried it.

    I went to the assigned area, chatted with the quest NPC, then I wanted to just murder all the hostiles in the area, so I went to find a good sniping spot... and then the quest failed because I left the area. RIP that NPC, RIP Phantom Liberty.

    Often when we talk about "hype" surrounding a release, it’s in anticipation of shared cultural euphoria more than that of a great gaming experience.

    Maybe I'm hijacking the discussion, but also I don't care. That quote is the first line of the article. That's pretty much exactly what I was trying to talk about the last time I commented about BG3 and called all the excitement surrounding it just "hype" and people were crawling out of the bushes to downvote and dunk on me for criticizing their new favorite game. Every time I looked at my message inbox I was making that "wtf" face the guy made when fucking O'Reilly said "tide goes in, tides goes out, you can't explain that."

    I didn't insult anyone. I shared a neutral opinion here but all you people just keep going for that cheap dopamine hit of "let's just downvote this guy together so we can feel good about ourselves" instead of actually talking.

    Internet points are worthless anyway. I find a bit of mild humor in the fact that everybody downvoting my comments here actually seems illiterate since everything needed to understand what I am trying to say is in that top level comment.

    Though really, I know none of you people are engaging me in good faith at all. Why don't you guys go back to Reddit and Twitter?

    Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t have the best launch (lol)

    Lmao, even.

    I'm ready for PL. I just finished re-watching Edgerunners last night in one go. It was just as good this time around as it was when I first saw it a year ago.

    Although both games launched to controversy, there is no real comparison between Starfield and Cyberpunk. Cyberpunk is flat out better.

    finthechat,
    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    I feel ya, OP. I bought Cyberpunk 2077 at launch, played the hell out of it and loved every second of it. Then I tried to find honest discussion about it and it was threads full of nonstop bitching or substance-free fluff from the low sodium crowd. There wasn't a place to find balanced talk where people could share their experiences about the game while also being civil and open minded about things.

    If you are just looking to create discussion, I guess this thread has been successful as it's gotten a lot of replies already.

    finthechat,
    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    Yeah. I started one a few weeks ago but I paused it when I heard that 2.0 is coming out. I'm gonna pick up the expansion and just play a new run all the way through, maybe watch Edgerunners again too.

    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    There felt like a lot of people who really wanted CP to be GTAV and were extremely upset that it wasn't.

    There was also a lot of angst from people who saw the words "open world" and expected it to mean some Second Life-esque escapist experience, rather than the actual meaning of open world, as in there is a big environment where you are free to roam around and do stuff in.

    Misled expectations from the marketing hype absolutely played a key role in all of that furor, but at least for me, I tune out most of it since I like making my own opinions on things.

    There's a TON more that could be said but those are the three standout points from my perspective.

    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    Fuck dem owls

    Any software engineers who work for big companies have any insight on this? Don't these places keep their own source? Or is it just on somebody's laptop that no one's seen since 2015?

    finthechat,
    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    A lot of snark in this reviewer's writing style. I get that it's her opinion and her freedom to write like that, but man it was annoying to read.

    Still, is a bit of a shame to hear that this title did not seem to execute well, since it has cool art, fits a niche that I like, and is from an indie dev - all of which are reasons that had kept me interested in this game since I first heard about it a year ago.

    (x) doubt

    In the case they are actually being honest, they could just be speaking relatively - which still doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in me that Starfield is going to be seamless and smooth at launch, or even a few months past launch.

    In the case that they are just clearly lying, it's an intentional strategy: they're counting on the fact that they will gain more money from this than they will lose from people discovering it was a lie after the game launches.

    finthechat,
    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    Lol nice stroll down memory lane.

    Can't believe people are still gonna trust this Bryan Kohberger-looking motherfucker anymore.

    What is up with Baldur's Gate 3?

    This is not a criticism - I love how much attention this game has been getting. I’m just not understanding why BG3 has been blowing up so much. It seems like BG3 is getting more attention than all of Larian’s previous games combined (and maybe all of Obsidian’s recent crpgs as well). Traditionally crpgs have not lit the...

    finthechat,
    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    It's hype.

    I hate tabletop RPGs, so I know no matter how good everyone says it is, I know it's not for me.

    finthechat,
    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    That's fine and fair.

    I know I'm just getting downvoted by people emotionally hurt by me stating I dislike tabletop RPGs. But my opinion is also being informed by my past experience with Larian's other celebrated game, Divinity Original Sin 2. No matter how hyped it was, or how clearly polished it was, I didn't think that game was fun either.

    finthechat,
    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    I don't see how me playing or not playing the game would disqualify me from recognizing the phenomenon surrounding this game as "hype." It's marketing hype, it's fresh new game hype, it's whatever you want to call it. The game is out, it's popular, people are leaving glowing reviews about it everywhere. That's hype.

    Just because I'm calling it "hype" doesn't mean I'm bashing the game, I'm making an observation where I give OP a concise response.

    finthechat,
    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    I mean, the snarky side of me wants to say "tell me you completely misunderstood my comment without telling me you completely misunderstood my comment."

    Though in case you are asking in good faith, I already wrote above "Just because I'm calling it "hype" doesn't mean I'm bashing the game, I'm making an observation where I give OP a concise response."

    To elaborate further: it seems like people are assuming "hype" has negative connotations where I'm actually delivering some underhanded criticism of the game, or Larian, or themselves as fans of the game, or themselves as fans of the movement of a non AAA game studio experiencing runaway critical success. I am doing none of these things. OP was wondering "what is up with Baldur's Gate 3?" and I answered. It's hype.

    There are other comments from people explaining the fine details of why BG3 is getting hyped up so much and those comments are rightly upvoted to the top, as they should be. However, for someone who doesn't have any skin in the game and is only passively interested in this whole thing (me, for example), this entire situation can be described as excitement, exuberance, noise, or... hype.

    Holy fuck I miss the days when words actually had meaning.

    finthechat, (edited )
    @finthechat@kbin.social avatar

    You nerds sure love putting words in my mouth. People need to calm their titties at best, or just shut the fuck up in general. Everyone's so programmed to just turning every single casual discussion online into a black and white argument of who is right or wrong. (That's you I'm talking about, btw)

    Tell me you completely missed the point of every comment I've made in this thread without telling me you completely missed the point of every comment I've made in this thread.
