Lunar, do games w What were the best and worst games you played in 2023?

I’ve played many games this year. The highlighting are:

  • Fallout 3 - I forgot how fun this game is. Especially the exploration;
  • Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings - good game as well;
  • Dead Rising - a truly hard game, that is also fun. Zombies!
  • Dead Space (2008) - still an awesome game!
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - the game is fun with the graphics and Force powers. Even though most boss fights are lame;
  • Silent Hill 2 - still awesome!
  • The Callisto Protocol - pretty good game! Surprised me how good it is;
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 - what a garbage game. Bad boss fights just to pad the game out.
scops,

I played the balls out of the Dead Rising series through the third game. Definitely check out 2 if you like the first one. Off the Record is a fun retread of the second game if you take a break before playing it. 3 was a bit poorer received at launch, but on an SSD, it’s still a damn fun game.

Never got around to the 4th game. It sounded pretty soulless from the reviews

Lunar,

Yeah, but first I’m going to go through the first game.

  • MagicShel,

    I loved every other Diablo and went hard on 4. Then one day I just put the controller down and never picked it back up. I might play more later, but I’m so tired of games that are just nakedly obvious about being nothing but a grind and a job. I wasted so much money getting PSPlus for just this game. All told I spent about $150 on this and the only thing of value I got was a few hours playing with some old friends who also stopped playing and made me realize I wasn’t getting anything else out of it.

    I’ve played a hell of a lot of BG3 and it feels completely the opposite. There is so much content that motivates me to do it for roleplay reasons. It doesn’t feel nearly as grindy. Some of the dialogs are a bit much to slog through after seeing them a few too many times, but they were all great the first time through, and it motivates me to try different options to get different dialog. But everyone knows BG3 is good.

    Guess I’ll round out my list.

    I really enjoyed Jedi: Outcast. Like BG3, the story is as good as the action, but there’s really only one storyline and if I recall you can get pretty much everything on a single playthrough so there aren’t really even mechanical decisions to make other than how to approach a combat.

    Horizon: Forbidden West was pretty fun. I put it down for other games and haven’t gotten back to it but I will. Seems to share a lot with Jedi. Similar gameplay, similar linear storyline. It feels like mechanical choices are more meaningful and maybe you can’t do everything on a single playthrough but again I haven’t finished it.

    Hogwarts Legacy: my wife wanted this because Harry Potter, but then it made her motion sick. So I felt obligated to play it to get our money’s worth and I didn’t make it very far at all before putting it down. Maybe there is more there further into the game but it didn’t grab me enough to find out.

    zipzoopaboop,

    Jedi outcast, as in the original from like 20 years ago?

    Or Jedi survivor that came out last year?

    MagicShel,

    Survivor. I can’t ever keep any of them straight. Jedi: Foo the Last.

    zipzoopaboop,

    Either way, both were good

    I have PlayStation Plus. Most of what I play are stinkers.

    Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2. It’s not on the switch, but I’m guessing it should run fine on your old laptop since D:OS1 came out in 2014. My wife and I love these games since she isn’t very good with fast action, and these are turn based fighting so she can take her time figuring out what to do to whom.

    It’s also got great couch co-op.

    duck_squirtle,

    Yep, my partner also did not enjoy the “misses” on his list, but we had a blast playing divinity original sins 1 & 2. Now we are 100 hours into Baldurs gate 3. I highly recommend these games for couples.

    Surprisingly, though, while more fast paced, she did also really enjoy It Takes Two. It is a game that does try to be a bit accessible for the new player.

    Glemek,

    I love dos2 and bg3, if we can work up to those I would count that as a huge success

    VelociCatTurd,

    Dos2 is on switch

    Portal 2 has a coop mode which I hear is great. I adore portal 1 and 2, but never got a chance to try coop.

    Decoy321,

    Can confirm, the portal 2 coop is fantastic.

    Glemek,

    I liked the portal games a lot, but they might be abit too spatial heavy for my partner, so I’m a little worried they’d disengage.

    Thanks!

    hactar42,

    My wife is not very spatial, but enjoyed playing coop Portal 2, for a little bit. Once we got to the stage where I was just telling her where to go or stand the entire time we stopped playing together.

    Glemek,

    That’s about what I would expect would happen with us too. Its already in my steam library tho, so we may try it.

    Chobbes,

    My partner had a hard time dealing with FPS movement. Throwing in portals just made it a complete mess. It really wasn’t a good jumping off point, I think it’s good to be weary.

    Buddahriffic, do games w What moment from a video game made you cry?

    Hades has some emotional moments. That game is so well-written. Trying to avoid spoilers, but the first time escaping was one, then the nth time escaping where they play that awesome track was another.

    I assume that this is sarcasm. However, on the chance that it’s not, why would you let internet strangers determine what you think is fun?

    aCosmicWave,

    You are right. I will keep the device. Thank you internet stranger!

    CaptObvious,

    For gods’ sakes don’t make me the arbiter of fun!

    aCosmicWave,

    How else will I know if I’m truly enjoying something? You seem like you know what you’re talking about.

    blazera, do games w What were your top favorite video games as a kid?
    @blazera@kbin.social avatar

    Mario RPG was my favorite (yes Im eating good right now). I like describing it as a toy, there are so many things to be done for no other reason than to have fun, enabled by the fact you're a platformer character in a 3D fantasy world. You cant jump onto the store's counter in other RPG's of the time, but you get to in this game, and you're rewarded with being scolded by the shopkeep. You can jump on all the NPC's, on wedding cake, pianos, hyperactive kids, all the beds, catapults. Jumping is often times your response to NPC dialogue.

    Merwyn, do games w What were your top favorite video games as a kid?

    Without a doubt Morrowind for me.

    Halo and Diablo also, in different genre.

    ArmoredThirteen,

    Damnit I was hoping I was in fast enough to be the Morrowind fan girl post but you’ve already mentioned it lol. Still play Morrowind, my favorite game, and the primary reason I’m in the game dev field.

    Merwyn,

    I wasn’t even the first, someone else posted it also while I was typing my answer.

    I didn’t even re play it that much. I think in the end I probably have more playtime on Oblivion. But much better/stronger memories from Morrowind. It was maybe because I had less video game experience to compare it with, but this one clearly left a big mark on me. I still have incredible goosebumps when “the road most travelled” or “nerevar rising” sounds start playing from my playlists.

    The gameplay maybe clunky compared to today, especially to combine weapon and magic. But everything else was so amazing for the time, and some part are still much better than recent games.

    I even had a talk with someone at an “ai in game dev” conference who took as an exemple the way the diary/quest log of Morrowind was working.
