If I might be so bold as to self promote my solo VR-only let’s play channel has long form gameplay with (almost) no edits or cuts and I discuss in depth the mechanics and art of the games I play. So far I’ve covered The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, Half Life: Alyx, Hello Puppets, Cosmodread, After the Fall, Into the Radius, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted, Wanderer, and most recently Half Life 2 VR.
I haven’t uploaded anything recently as my partner and I just got married but there’s a decent backlog of games and I plan on continuing my run of Half Life 2 once it gets back up and running.
Thanks, yeah that’s the sort of thing I had in mind. To clarify sensible edits that improve the flow are totally fine as long as they are not the popular-youtuber types with flashy transitions, cutting to memes, screaming or making a face etc.
Not really a Let’s Play, but more of an “I’m Playing“, but I recently discovered SourSweet’s DayZ series. He only edits for time and to add film score type music to heighten the drama, as well as narration. He’s calm and collected, very skilled at the game, and there are no memes.
Ethos MC vids in general. I also have a fair bit of nolstalgia for some of the old Chuggaconroy series (might have forced jokes, but tbh I can’t remember).
For general gaming news, I go with Jeff Gerstmann and the Nextlander guys. For more technically focused stuff, it’s hard to beat Digital Foundry and their methodology of focusing on the user experience over benchmark numbers. I think all of those folks have been around long enough to be above chasing the hype cycle for traffic and they all have context from decades of being in the industry. Rich from DF started working in games media in 1990 and Jeff started working at Gamespot in 1996. It’s hard to find other folks who have been in the industry that long and still working in games coverage.
I left right before High Isle came out, but nothing I’ve tried since has really caught my attention the same way. Even GW2, as awesome as it is, and as many QoL features it has that I deeply missed in ESO, just… isn’t the same.
Did they ever get the Champion Points re-worked into something that doesn’t suck? I hate the way the green constellations worked, particularly; whose idea was it to say “Nobody harvests, chest-hunts, fishes, and searches for crafting recipes at the same time, so obviously it’s silly to let players equip all those bonuses at once”??
Even if not, I think I might drop Netflix and re-up my subscription. If just to remind me why I left, maybe?
Getting access to all the weapon skills is so much faster, which makes trying out new builds a thousand times easier.
Not having to find and speak to the quest giver before I can do the quest is great. I like just having to get into their radius without having to track them down before and after.
I’m a big explorer, so I really appreciate the rewards for exploring the maps (and the compass pointing me towards the things I missed).
The jumping puzzles are amazing.
The free mount not being a boring-ass horse is pretty cool. Mounts having different abilities is also cool. Not having to spend 120 real days upgrading your mounts is really nice.
Getting experience from harvesting and crafting. Not having to spend real-time months researching things to craft them.
Underwater exploration. Yeah, underwater combat is kind of a pain, but it’s still cool to have the option.
The directed story mode complete with boss fights in instances that can be done solo.
Classes are all totally different from each other; there are no “meta” skills for a specific role no matter what class you’re playing (eg, unstable wall, aggressive warhorn).
Enough skill points in the game to learn every skill and every specialization, along with the ability to switch builds on the fly just whenever (without having to go back to a shrine and pay to do it).
I’m not sure how I feel about having a centralized auction house. A lot of my endgame in ESO was shopping and flipping valuable things from one trader to another, but I have to admit it’s really handy to just be able to go buy a bunch of crafting materials in any city for the lowest available price.
Like, I could just keep going; there are so many things, both little and big, that I love about GW2. But for some reason, I just can’t get into it. Maybe it’s that it levels me up so fast that I don’t get to really enjoy the view and learn the class. Maybe it’s because the elite specializations change the class so dramatically that most of what I did learn during leveling is immediately obsolete at 80. Maybe it’s because the combat feels kind of clunky due to being a weird hybrid of action combat and tab targeting. Maybe it’s how complicated the buff system is, that I can’t really wrap my brain around all the different boons and when I need them. None of those are really big deals, just quirks of the game that make it unique, like all games have. But it’s not doing the same thing that ESO did for me.

Regarding tab targeting vs action, really you can play it almost entirely like one or the other and you don’t need to interact with the other system if you don’t want to. But I love helping people click with the game because it took me a while and I’m glad I finally stuck so I’d love to pay it forward
I can't speak on that specific timeline, but CP has had a pretty large makeover recently. You still only have 4 slottable abilities, but quite a few have moved to passive status. Unsure if the ones you reference specifically are though, green tree is usually a throwaway tree for me.
A survival game akin to rimworld, banished or project zomboid except food is insanely realistic. Crops take ages to grow, hunting a deer should be a massive victory that secures you for a while, you could become nutrient-deficient by only plowing down heads of cabbage, and so on…
I would say Project Zombiod the closest one on that list. Just need a few mods to raise the hunger rate, more comprehensive nutrient stats, and farm difficulty scaling. The game already laid out most of the groundwork.
Unreal world is a roguelike based in iron age Finland which fits almost exactly like you are describing except it’s a single pawn you control and not a colony.
I’m part of the club! Although tbf I haven’t touched it much since getting it about a year ago (I just haven’t played that much retro stuff these days or most of it has been with my Super Nt).
One great addition I got recently was a 3D printed grip case, it made long play sessions sooo much more comfortable (obligatory “not affiliated” and I’m not the one making these, but I really like the quality which is why I’m linking it here).
As far as what I’ve been playing on it recently… really just pick up and play, SoR 2 or Turtles in Time, but I completed Metroid Fusion (first time) a few months ago on the Pocket (that’s what made me get a grip case, it really wasn’t too great wrt shoulder buttons comfort).
I keep being tempted to pick one up but I’m not a huge fan of old handheld games. Even growing up I was always like “I wish these were more like the PC or console versions.” My first system was a GBC so maybe a bit before my time. Happily playing PC games on a steam deck these days though. My childhood dream is real now! lol
But it’s not just handheld games. My analogue pocket has the entire SNES, NES, Mega Drive and Pc Engine libraries, plus Amiga. Loads of MiSTer cores have been ported.
Playing SNES on the pocket is amazing. And it’s better on the pocket than any other device I’ve ever used.
I really like watching ChristopherOdd and Gab Smolders. Odd plays a lot of tactical games and popular titles. Gab tends to do more indie and horror but also does some popular games on occasion.
Tried to play this with my wife some years ago. We kept getting sent to separate instances. That and the poor quality graphics at the time were a deal breaker for us.
My sister and I had that problem when she started playing. What you have to do is group up and use the wayshrine to travel to them. Even if you’re in the same zone, travel away and travel back and then you should be able to see each other. Hope that helps!
The game is a lot better than when it first came out. Hope you’re able to try it again. Yhere are also reshaders that you can install to make your game look prettier. Give me a holler if you need help!
If anyone has any questions I run this magazine over on kbin! Its lacking content, but that partially cause no one is there to discuss with. I post PvP clips just to get stuff out there but would love further discussion. I do endgame PvE (no perfectas because I'm not a fan of longterm progs) and run with one of the (arguably) best ball groups on Xbox/NA in Cyrodiil.
His early ones with Anthony are definitely my favorite. The Messenger series is amazing, and I can’t see the game without hearing “I’m Ninja Bobbyyyy!”
Yeah, this is a good one. Works surprisingly well for solo playthroughs, too. The base game for free is a great deal. Lots to do before you get to the later DLC.
Good writing, voice acting is miles above all other Elder Scrolls games, the magic and abilities are really fun (don’t know if it’s available with this free version, but Necromancer class is fucking awesome).
And so. much. lore. If you ever read the books in any of the games, there’s a particular individual who often comes up in necromancer books which sometimes net you a skill point in Conjuration in Skyrim. This game fleshes out that entire story.
You also get to discover areas we haven’t seen much of. Elsweyr, Black Marsh, Summerset Isles, High Rock, and more. Every province, basically.
Literally my only complaint is that I really loved Molag Bal’s voice actor in Skyrim and this new one doesn’t hit as hard for me. Actually goes for a few of the Daedric Princes. I know why people didn’t like his voice, but I fucking loved Hermaeus Mora in Skyrim. Also doesn’t hit as hard here, but it doesn’t matter much.
I should actually maybe get back to it. Kind of burned myself out, but now feels like a good time to jump back in.
There is some stuff (other than the story DLC) which essentially requires real money, but none of it is particularly necessary (although one could argue that the crafting bag is absolutely necessary, which I wouldn’t entirely disagree with).
They got the Skyrim voice actor (wes Johnson) back for old Herma Mora for the new expansion in Apocrypha. And they had him go back and rerecord the old voice lines as well. I think they did that with Dagon as well.
Wow haha, as someone who finally got 6144 a few years ago this game really is a true gem and one of the greatest phone games of all time. 12 years ago I bought it on a whim on a lunch break, and it is easily the most played game of all time for me at this point (coming from years of cod, halo, rocket league, etc).
You honestly made my day with this post, my friends know me as the friend who still plays the weird 2048 clone, but I got my son into it too. He finally hit 768 and I was so proud lol. I am still trying to achieve a “perfect” game but the algorithm definitely doesn’t like it. Technically in the top 100 on the leaderboards lol
