I bought a couple of tactics like games on steam and they all dont seem to be fun to me. I guess I like to grind a bit on fair but punishing tactics titles.
X-Com - UFO Defense and TFTD are definitely my favorite. Fallout 1&2 are a close second and I’ve been meaning to play through them again. Ogre Battle is a distant third, with Front Mission right behind it.
There’s a reason why oldschool X-Com players kept coming back to the games despite technical issues like the Groundhog Day bug. (Thank all applicable deities for OpenXcom solving those issues, though.)
Absolutely loved both of them! I think UFO Defense was the first pc game I played on our first 486. It was one of the first games I ever successfully hacked.
Not sure how many people know, but there’s another game from Gollop, Rebelstar Tactical Command for Gameboy Advance. It’s part of the Rebelstar series dating back to the ZX Spectrum. It plays pretty much the same as the original XCom games.
That’s fine. Created characters are strong enough to beat the game with. I only played through it 2 times, but my second run I used as few named chars as possible. I created my team based on Seiken Densetsu 3 characters.
As a kid I was like ‘oh sure Rock Tunnel dark af let’s fkn go to Lavender’ but now I’m like ‘Rock Tunnel? That’s a lazy name’. Also Dark Cave in gen 2. No points for creativity.
Commandos to me is the start of a different lineage of real-time tactical stealth games, which goes on to include Desperados, Shadow Tactics, and Shadow Gambit (yes, most of those were made by the same team).
Outside of the OGRE-alikes (FO Tactics, FF Tactics, Disgea, and so on) some other options for tactical games that are a little different:
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident - sort of a 4X game mixed with tactics, or like Homeworld with a lot fewer units
Myth: The Fallen Lords (and sequels) - classic pre-Halo Bungie titles that mix RPG and strategy. Somewhat defining for the RTS genre too.
UFO: Aftershock and sequels - a series that tried to revive XCom before Firaxis rebooted it. Not as good, but pretty interesting and fun, a little easier than old school xcom but not as polished as the newer ones.
Cannon Fodder - a UK classic, very arcadey but very fun and lighter than all these other “serious” games
OpenCritic - 35 average - 0% recommended - 18 reviews
Dear lord you don’t see that often. I mean, it’s no surprise and it’s definitely deserved as the game is a hot pile of garbage but even then. They didn’t buy off a single reviewer?
I finally bought a blasting new computer to play Horizon Forbidden West! It’s so beautiful. Haven’t even gotten through the tutorial yet and it’s surpassed Zero Dawn already in terms of environment.
anyone else enjoying watching your favorite streamers play this absolute steamer of a game? i hate how much i savor the rare release of a high-budget, overhyped flop.
Edit: Do you ever think about buying games like this, just to say thank you to the dev for giving you hours of hilarious streams? Like obviously support the streamer first if you can only afford to support one of them, but at a certain discount, the price feels like fair compensation for all that unintended entertainment.
To me it was the 2014 Thief. I never had any proper experience with the previous games of the series, only tried Thief 3 back when my PC could barely run it, so the low fps made me give up. My short time with new Thief wasn’t bad, though I didn’t finish the game as it was on my xbox1 and I never really sat down to play anything to completion on it. Online it’s all “Thief is shit, it’s a shit game” etc. Maybe I didn’t get to the shit part, I completed maybe 4 missions?, but while it wasn’t amazing, it felt like a decent stealth game and had me more interested in continuing than Styx Master of Shadows
I’ve been getting better about it. Did New Vegas recently (I was told my egg would crack playing it but it didn’t. Can’t even get a refund now. Sadge.), playing Fallout 4 now. At my current rate I should have a clear backlog in… NaN
Had gay folks (Including Arcade and Veronica) that weren’t campy stereotypes, and not just the one or two companions, but a fair amount of other folks around the wasteland. You could be mechanically bisexual (which gives you bonus damage against both genders lol.) and it probably helps that you can kill oppressors (The Legion) as well. No one explicitly trans though, but the vibes are right.
