Gameplay mechanics were also a lot better with more replayability. (lemmy.world) angielski

Ignoring the lack of updates if the game is buggy, games back then were also more focused on quality and make gamers replay the game with unlockable features based on skills, not money. I can’t count the number of times I played Metal Gear Solid games over and over to unlock new features playing the hardest difficulty and with...

smeg,

Modern AAA gaming, this is like complaining that all movies are copy+paste superhero flicks because that’s all you see at the cinema!

smeg,

Never been to an arcade, eh?

smeg,

My point is that they are representative of how gaming used to be. Good on Germany for treating addiction-based money-extractors as what they are though!

smeg,

Portal 2 is definitely the one I pick up regularly, but specifically for the Perpetual Testing Initiative. I’ve already played the main story enough times, but dropping in for a few really well-made user-created levels with a little bit of new Cave Johnson dialogue is great!

There is one uncleared level remaining in Super Mario Maker, with 18 days to go before the servers shut down (www.issmmbeatenyet.com) angielski

UPDATE: Ahoyoo has confirmed that Trimming the Herbs was uploaded with TAS tools, meaning that The Last Dance was the final legitimate level all along! Congrats to kazeihinn on the Last First Clear! The journey continues in Super Mario Maker 2…...

smeg,

I made a post about this earlier today, if anyone knows the game well enough to know how to mass-download levels before the servers shut down, or even just how many levels are included on the disc, then please give me a shout!

smeg,

Nice!

smeg,

That’s not bring cynical, it’s just being realistic. They’re a publicly traded company, every action they take has to (by law?) be to make more money!

smeg,

Did they sell it though? Everyone who bought it got the game they paid for (and now sort of don’t have anymore, lol) but wasn’t the promise of PvE an add-on to the now free game?

smeg,

I played it to completion. Then Rebirth came out and I played it to completion (barring The Lost, because come on). I only recently picked up Repentance and I’m already another 200 hours in.

❤️, or perhaps I should say ❤️🤍🤍💙💙🖤💔

smeg,

There is sort of a time limit though, you get your “review” at the end of the second year (at which point no new events happen). Also getting things planted in time for when the seasons change etc is kind of time-limiting.

But that’s all detail, it’s great that people can enjoy it without time pressures!

smeg,

Well that’s probably a good thing for playing casually. I think end of year 2 is the earliest though, so that’s kind of a “soft” deadline.

smeg,

Were they things that don’t usually happen in years 1 and 2? I guess they could just be stuff that was added since I last played!

smeg,

Yeah it was only pre-holy mantle that I gave up on, The Lost is actually a pretty interesting character to play now. Is Tainted Lost still slightly easier than original Lost though?

smeg,

The glassiest of cannons, I look forward to it!

smeg,

Nintendo announces all online functionality will cease for 3ds and Wii U titles in early April (specifically April 8th 2024)

Oh shit, I didn’t realise this deadline was so close! Should I be firing Mario Maker up now and downloading every level I can while I have the chance? Though I think I stopped playing it when I realised most of the levels were just words being spelled out in blocks with no actual gameplay…

smeg,

I only ever got them off friends or when traveling into London. Then one day I discovered that you could set up a Streetpass ‘relay’ just by setting your home WiFi’s SSID to some secret string and then you’d be able to meet other people using the same SSID wherever they were in the world. It stopped working eventually, but me and about 6 other people somewhere in the world made good use of it!

smeg,

You can replay it to find all the extra secrets though

smeg,

“Good” and “bad” games are not something that the business wankers can see on a PowerPoint. They already ordered their devs to make a good game and that didn’t work. They know pay-to-win mobile trash makes money, so they’re ordering their devs to make that instead.

smeg,

Display name vs actual user ID, right? You can change your display name to whatever but the actual account name will be the same. Kind of insane that Steam lets you change quite so much in one go without flagging suspicious behaviour though.

smeg,

There are so many games available without microtransactions that I can happily never play one and not feel I’m missing out. We’re having the nuanced discussion now!

smeg,

Is this a sponsored post by a bought-and-paid-for shill, or is the writer just so worn down by microtransactions over the years that they’re Stockholm-Syndromed into thinking this is somehow OK?

smeg,

I think this is just what happens when an art gets big and becomes an industry. Film buffs don’t get (too) wound up at every new formulaic action movie, soulless remake, or low-brow comedy (and all the money-grabbing tie-ins that come with them); maybe we should all just chill out and stop worrying about the mass-market blockbusters when there’s still a wealth of great stuff to play.

smeg,

I made a couple of posts recently about how it doesn’t really matter that there’s all this money-grabbing because we’re so spoiled for choice from the past few decades. My conclusion was that there’s no point in worrying when I’ve got a big pile of great games to play already!

smeg,

Preaching to the choir mate, I run freegames@feddit.uk, I acquire recent-but-not-brand-new AA-but-not-AAA games faster than I can play them! It’s still a great experience to be a patient gamer.

smeg,

Yeah but it’s become way more mainstream with the rise of mobile gaming (because suddenly half the population of the world is a potential customer)

smeg,

This is the first time I’ve even heard of this game. Just ignore the big paid-for marketing announcements and find real people’s recommendations.

smeg,

Do you only think the hardware is underwhelming because you’re comparing it to a PlayStation that’s about ten times larger? As a handheld console you can’t deny it was impressive.

smeg,

Fair enough, I’ve only played a couple of switch games and they seemed fine to me

smeg,

Isn’t console speculation always kind of overblown?

smeg,

That’s basically what xboxes have been for the past two generations already, despite the snark that kind of makes them more open than other consoles just because the games are basically already PC games

smeg,

They probably weren’t lying then or now, they are committed… for this quarter. When they read the numbers next quarter, well that’s completely unrelated to today’s commitments!

smeg,

Android is Linux

Yes and no

smeg,

True, I was just nit-picking rather than disagreeing with your original statement

smeg,

I know, I meant I wasn’t disagreeing with your first comment about Microsoft using Linux!

smeg,

3 months being exactly one financial quarter. They probably weren’t lying, they were committed… for that quarter. When they read the numbers next quarter, well that’s completely unrelated to today’s commitments!

New Manjaro Linux Gaming Handheld from OrangePi (neo.manjaro.org) angielski

This is exciting! A gaming handheld from a great open source hardware company that makes SBCs like the RP5. It looks to have all the quality features and combines the best of all the handhelds I’ve seen. This has me really excited....

smeg,

Oh wow, a Steam Deck rival/imitator that’s actually listened to Valve’s suggestions on how to make it work, i.e. touchpads, Linux, etc. I will follow its career with great interest!

smeg,

They’re absolutely powering through the major version releases, good to see active development on an (only slightly hyperbolic) actually revolutionary project!

smeg,

Verona instead of Venice

The original was also in Verona, Baz Luhrmann’s one was in “Verona Beach” or something like that

smeg,

They already remastered it? Isn’t it only a few years old? Or did they call the port to the next generation of console hardware a remaster?

smeg,

I played Red Steel for the first time recently, it was not good. I can see how the motion controls would have been really cool as a lot of people’s first ever experience of them, but yeah, it hadn’t aged well!

smeg,

Does CSGO still give you cosmetic items that you can sell for real money? If so then I guess that’s the goal.

Veteran Videogame Analyst: Subscription growth has flattened [in video games] (files.catbox.moe) angielski

Adding a bit more to the discussion on whether game subscription can be “the future”, it looks like despite the heavy push made in the past decade, subscriptions only make up 10% of total video game spending in the US....

smeg,

I’m not sure there ever was a honeymoon phase for game subscriptions

Couldn’t you repeatedly get gamepass for a month for £1 or similar? Assuming they don’t offer that anymore, I think the honeymoon is over!

smeg,

You can buy individual films and TV programmes though, it’s just that most people want them now rather than in a day or two when the DVD arrives in the post

smeg,

The games that end up that large are probably all the AAAs with big deadlines that end up released half-finished anyway, I doubt the companies in charge want to justify the extra cost of releasing an optimised demo if they don’t think it’s going to be worth the effort.

smeg,

Yeah that would be great. A single tweet can sound well-informed but I don’t know if this guy is an expert with a pile of data or just a person capable of chatting shit!
