Stadia's death spiral, according to the Google employee in charge of mopping up after its murder (www.pcgamer.com) angielski

A statement from a Google employee, Dov Zimring, has been released as a part of the FTC vs Microsoft court case (via 9to5Google). Only minorly redacted, the statement gives us a run down of Google's position leading up to Stadia's closure and why, ultimately, Stadia was in a death spiral long before its actual demise....

smeg,

Does it actually even exist? I feel like I’ve been getting whispered rumours about it for years and years, but never anything sold!

smeg,

That was a very interesting video though. Nobody’s making you watch it, you’re wasting your own time!

smeg,

There’s a Forged in the Dark game called Runners in the Shadows which looks pretty cool!

smeg,

But MONEY! Don’t you want to make loads of MONEY? Here, watch this Unity developer video about how to squeeze MONEY out of those generous chumps who supported you! It’s the Unity way!

smeg,

You can set your private DNS to something like dns.adguard.com, that blocks all ads in mobile games (and every other app) that I’ve tried

smeg,

& Knuckles?

smeg,

Excellent (if slightly terrifying) thumbnail

smeg,

I think the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge could be added to any game and it would generate a new level based on the content of it, but I’d love to see someone check!

smeg,

They haven’t called it anything yet, this is just a way of saying “new version of the switch”. Could still be Super Switch, SwitchU or even New Switch XL!

[Rumor] Nintendo Switch 2 reportedly uses Nvidia's DLSS to boost frame rates (www.pcgamer.com) angielski

Interestingly, the demo was apparently running ray traced visuals, and was utilising Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) in order to offer playable frame rates that will make enabling such fancy effects actually worthwhile.

smeg,

Mario Odyssey was the best Mario game I’ve every played, so not all bad. I just borrowed a Switch to play it though. Nobody is forcing you to pay the Nintendo tax!

Looking for games with unique core mechanics

I’m requesting for recommendations for games that stand out from the rest in their genre, and not in the sense of being the best game in that niche but actually bringing something new and innovative to the table. I’ve not had much experience in gaming, but I have a few games to give you a hint on what I am talking about:...

smeg,

It’s Portal on acid, a great game. Also Manifold Garden by the same guy.

smeg,

Probably the racism

smeg,

Xenophobia then. If your defence for bigotry is that it’s technically not racism, you’re still a bigot.

smeg,

There’s a colossal difference between disliking the actions of a country’s politicians and describing a people as a “garbage culture with no morals”. And while “race” is a kind of wishy-washy term with no real definition, I think plenty of ethnic Turks would disagree.

smeg,

This sounds like a console user problem. PCs haven’t had disc drives for years and the games are far cheaper. Yes, there’s no second-hand market, but with steam sales, humble bundles, and all the freebies I post in !freegames it’s not really become the corpo hellscape we feared.

Also technically you don’t own games on disc either, it’s just much harder for the publisher to come round your house and snap your copy!

Legend has spent years making Portal for the N64 and by Gaben he's done it (www.pcgamer.com) angielski

Several years ago PCG reported on the early stages of a project by programmer James Lambert, who really loves the N64 and decided for the hell of it to make a version of Portal that runs on hardware first released in 1996....

Japanese PC gaming saw another year of explosive growth (www.pcgamer.com)

Japanese gamers have continued to embrace the PC as a platform at staggering rates, jumping up 43% from 131.3 billion yen to 189.2 billion yen in 2022. That's a total size of about $1.3 billion US. The data comes from the latest report by Kadokawa ASCII Research Laboratories, an industry think tank which compiles yearly material...

smeg,

PC gaming has always been better value though, this doesn’t really explain the sudden rise

Not counting games that were unfun because of bugs, what’s the most unfun video game that you’ve played and what made it unfun? (kbin.cafe) angielski

Most of the video games I’ve played were pretty good. The only one I can think of that I didn’t like was MySims Kingdom for the Nintendo DS. Dropped that pretty quickly. It was a long while ago, but I’ll guess it was because there were too many fetch quests and annoying controls.

smeg,

Interesting, I hated playing co-op mode because player 2 wasn’t playing efficiently!

smeg,

Papers, Please has 20 different endings, you can definitely follow a different storyline!

smeg,

The Last of Us. Over-hype definitely didn’t help, but it looked brown and dreary, seemed to mainly involve walking around waiting for press X to do thing to appear on screen, and having plot thrown at me when I actually wanted to play a game.

smeg,

Valve don’t care about being the market leader in hardware though, they’re just happy to create a new market for people to play Steam games on!

smeg,

Sure, let’s go with that

smeg,

Minecraft? Or if that’s too detailed, maybe Manifold Garden.

smeg,

Well he’s not going to say " oh yeah, wait a year or two to buy our hardware for way less" now, is he?

smeg,

I just always assumed he was a low-poly rendering of DK

smeg,

You’ve seen other common denominators which you might have thought were pretty low, but here we unveil truly the lowest common denominator.

Pssst, can I interest you in some free video games? (feddit.uk) angielski

Howdy pardners, this is a cheeky self-plug for !freegames, a community I’ve created to post limited-time full-game free giveaways. It’s been going a month or two and I’m already claiming games faster than I can play them, so come and join me and make your what-game-to-play choice paralysis worse!

smeg,

Technically true, though you can start a free trial of Prime and claim all the games, and then (supposedly) they’re still yours to keep after the trial expires. A small hoop to jump through, but it should mean free games!

smeg,

They give away a surprising number of games so it’s definitely worth noting

smeg,

Ooh, I hadn’t considered free tabletop giveaways! Is that a print-at-home sort of thing?

Edit: I misread tabletop RPGs as board games, d’oh! I think somewhere like !rpg might be better, but we could have a TTRPG Tuesday or similar.

smeg,

Ah OK, stuff that’s always free isn’t really what I made the community for, it’s more about grabbing games that are normally paid. I do think that !rpg would be a good place top cross-post to though!

smeg, (edited )

According to the game pages themselves:

Games with Prime are free to collect and can be kept forever.

I’ve not tried cancelling myself, but a quick web search for other people asking this question says yes you do keep them!

smeg,

All the ones not from Amazon are, and if you want you can just create a free Prime trial, claim all the free games, keep them indefinitely, and give them no money

smeg,

Roughly every week but I’ve not really noticed an exact pattern. I believe Lemmy lets you subscribe to a community as an RSS feed so you could use that as a notification if you can get it working!

smeg,

Lol, this one is for honourable sailors of the king’s navy

smeg,

No problem with that, plenty of indies on IndieGala and itch.io to claim instead

smeg,

Can you not create a new account with a new (or alias) email? Or do they want phone number, card, or other less-easily-created details?

The Amazon ones are tagged as such, but there are plenty of other providers with less hoops to jump through!

smeg,

Most of them don’t, and the ones that do are all tagged with [Amazon]. I made no such assumption!

smeg,

Well if you click on the posts you’ll see that I do state that information in the description, I just don’t overload the title with it

smeg,

Look at the list of banned countries. Do you think those countries have many casinos?

smeg,

When I first played CK2 I had a revolt before the tutorial had taught me how to fight a war.

smeg,

This is the first one of these steam deck competitors that actually looks like it’s taken notes on the competition: trackpad like a deck, joycons like a switch, back buttons, a kickstand; much more interesting than one of the ones that looks like they’ve just stuck a screen on an xbox controller. The deck’s big feature is its software though and this runs windows, so they better have a good plan for how to make it performant without costing the world!

Steam Deck VS rivals

I was interested in buying a Steam Deck… Until I discovered all the (apparently) better alternatives. Asus Rog Ally, OneXPlayer, Aya Neo etc… I like the idea of an handheld console and obviously I would like to have a device that can run almost everything, so the Windows based handhelds seem better than the Steam Deck. Is it...

smeg,

it’s a machine that runs limited Steam games

This is not true though, it’s a full PC which you can install whatever you want on, which just happens to have a very convenient way to run most steam games on

smeg,

I didn’t say all, I said most.

smeg,

Companies do things for money, people do things they’re passionate about

smeg,

I’m fully well aware of the benefits of PC gaming (I’ve not bought a console for a decade and I run a community for free PC game giveaways!), but you can’t really get mad at a console company releasing a new version. The point of a console is to be a fixed, known piece of hardware that children can use without needing to tinker with settings, and obviously they’re going to want to up the version of things every few years as technology progresses!

smeg,

You don’t need to buy a state of the art PC though. You can play most indies on a ten year old laptop, and you can build a good enough PC for the same price as a console and all its peripherals. The real savings are in the software though, you don’t need to pay full whack for games when you have steam sales, free giveaways, and the ability to play anything that anyone has made for the last few decades!
