smeg,

Speak for yourself, “gamer”, it’s the latest Mario Kart game, obviously we’re all still playing it. Have you gone back to Double Dash?

smeg,

I can offer you a less harmful addiction, get yourself some !freegames and load up on all the games you’ll never play without hurting your wallet ;)

Anyone knows about calm Windows games with 1-finger touch screen support? angielski

What I am searching for is for games that support touch screens and can be played with 1 finger / one hand. No action games with fake joysticks on the screen, just games that work with a single finger or at least one hand while lying in bed and trying to wind down. One very good example is Civilization V, which has a dedicated...

smeg,

Tinyfolks is a little indie turn-based roguelike you can compete a run of in a few hours. It’s like Darkest Dungeon except with the opposite amount of stress, and it actually only supports mouse/touchscreen!

smeg,

Definitely not a resource-intensive game!

smeg,

According to Wikipedia it started out as a mod, Valve asked them not to give it a name too similar to their own Half-Life Source, then later Valve approached them and suggested a commercial release!

smeg,

I’ve played video games as a criminal, a murderer, a genocidal maniac, and a wrathful god, but never something as horrifying as an estate agent

Valve announces Steam Deck OLED refresh: Pre-orders start Nov. 16th. (www.youtube.com) angielski

Refresh features include: OLED HDR 90 hz Better battery life (50wh vs 40wh) Cooler Lighter Even better performance, even though not advertised by Valve! (because of the better DDR memory 6400mt/s vs 55000mt/s) Bigger screen...

smeg,

Based on my experience of the current Deck I’d say it’s not for everyone, but for my use-case it’s one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. If you’ve got a large backlog of PC games you’ve built up over the years, you’re OK with a little bit of tinkering to get some of them working, and you want to play them curled up on the sofa, then this is definitely the device for you!

Backpack Battles: business model i haven't seen since Minecraft, and it seems to be working?

All over Twitch, about half the streamers I usually watch playing turn-based strategy games are all suddenly playing the same new game. I watched a few streams, and it looked interesting. Normally, I never buy games when they just come out because I have such a backlog and can wait for a sale, but I figured if everyone...

smeg,

Sadly I’ve seen a few games available for free recently which are slightly deceptive in mentioning that they’re actually only demos. The example that sticks out is Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, not to be confused with Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition (Base Game), a paid DLC which is actually the game. Obviously you see what’s going on pretty quickly, but the headline “game is free” is not the same as “demo available”!

smeg,

This is Nintendo we’re talking about, doing common things that other tech companies do isn’t exactly their way of playing. Also, make your kids share!

smeg,

I didn’t consider cartridge size as an issue, at least back in the day they were large enough that it was harder to lose them!

What is something (feature, modes, settings...) you would like to see become a standard in video games? angielski

I’ve been thinking about making this thread for a few days. Sometimes, I play a game and it has some very basic features that are just not in every other game and I think to myself: Why is this not standard?! and I wanted to know what were yours....

smeg,

It’s more for the camera control rather than the character control

smeg,

This was going to be my point, the “quick save and quit” option, regardless of how the “normal” save system works. It’s fine if the game only wants you to create a save point you can reload from at certain locations, but a quick save that disappears when you reload it means you can put down the game immediately when the real world comes a-knocking.

smeg,

There are too many articles posted in gaming communities which are actually just business articles which happen to be about companies involved in making games. Obviously it affects everything, but like you I don’t care about business bullshit!

smeg,

That applies to open software standards, what does it have to do with buying cash cows?

smeg,

It does seem like some people just automatically post it on every thread that mentions Microsoft. Just because we all dislike something doesn’t mean we want to see the same low-effort comments spammed every time they come up in discussion like we’re still on Reddit!

smeg,

I had to use an incognito window for it to be claimable, I imagine some weirdness on their website because it’s a bundle

smeg,

Would you normally replace a perfectly functional console with a smaller but otherwise identical machine? Do what you want with your own cash but that’s a very decadent purchase!

smeg,

Completely trivial point, but a non-USAist I don’t think I’ll ever stop finding the phrase “the Holiday Season” weird. If you mean Christmas because you want people to buy it as a Christmas present, then just say Christmas! I guess it’s to be non-religious but I just find it funny to say “the holiday season” to mean winter when the season that everyone goes on holiday is summer.

smeg,

That much makes sense, but when it’s companies releasing products they hope will be bought as Christmas presents then it’s just odd to hear them skirting round the word “Christmas”. Unless you guys buy each other PS5s for new year?

smeg,

Yeah I get it, it’s just one of those phrases that sounds weird to the non-American ear

smeg,

Yeah it makes sense, just sounds odd. Maybe it’s because here in Britain Christmas is kind of a thing for everyone almost entirely independent of religion. Cultural differences and all that.

smeg,

I think it could also be cultural difference in the use of the word “holiday”. In Britain a holiday is what you’d call vacation, whereas our bank holidays are what you’d call public holidays. We don’t generally refer to Christmas and New Year as holidays, even though that’s when you take time off work, because you’re not “going on holiday”.

smeg,

As I said in another reply, yeah it makes sense, just sounds odd. Maybe it’s because here in Britain Christmas is kind of a thing for everyone almost entirely independent of religion. Cultural differences and all that.

smeg,

Off the top of my head there’s failing to prepare for massive changes to the ads they could run on Apple and Google’s platforms and then realising that the money they were making was way less than expected, purchasing a company associated with malware, calling game developers “fucking idiots”, growing the company enormously over lockdown and then realising they’ve pissed all their money away. I don’t really know what a CEO actually does so a lot of that could be just company decisions, but JR definitely seems like a loose cannon who can’t help being wildly unprofessional.

smeg,

It’s completely unnecessary as well. We are absolutely spoiled for choice when it comes to video games, I pick up more for free than I have time to play, and with services like gamepass, offers like humble bundle, and the ever-present steam sales, there’s no reason to ever have to fork out big money for a game you feel you need to play a hundred hours in just to feel you’ve got your money’s worth. If you don’t like it after a few hours then just move on to one of the myriad games in your backlog and you’ll soon forget the boring one.

smeg,

It’s worse for CK2, you only get achievements if you’re playing on ironman mode. Given how complex it is to just understand how to play the game properly, even if you really enjoy it you might play for hundreds of hours before even starting an ironman run!

smeg,

I’m not surprised at all to see a soulslike being polarising. Some people absolutely love them, but I think you find out pretty quickly if they’re not for you!

smeg,

I tried it for a few hours and my review was “not telling you how to play the game doesn’t make it hard, it makes it badly designed”. I get that a lot of people like that, but I was just not having fun as I wandered around confused to be killed again.

smeg,

I posted another comment about having pretty much this exact experience myself!

smeg,

I guess I can’t say its objectively bad because so many people enjoy it, but a game where I can’t even tell if I’m playing it correctly is definitely not for me

smeg,

Did you play on PC? Apparently the original port was really badly done.

smeg,

It’s really good. Pretty laggy if you’re playing on original hardware though!

smeg, (edited )

Did you know you can get RSS feeds for any Lemmy community? I’ve only bothered setting up one (https://feddit.uk/feeds/c/freegames.xml?sort=Active), but hey, it is gaming content!

smeg,

I don’t think space battles are anywhere near as exciting when you have to deal with realistic orbital mechanics!

smeg,

Or store.epicgames.com/en-US/free-games if you always want to go straight to the freebies (though you have to wait for the actual freebies to load, they show you the freemium ones while you wait!)

smeg,

As long as there’s sufficiently few regulations to stop it being profitable for companies to market and sell vapourware then people will keep assuming they’re not buying into a scam

smeg,

Just because people are stupid doesn’t mean they deserve to be scammed!

AR horror Scrylight will "blur the boundaries of what’s real and what isn't" (www.eurogamer.net) angielski

Upcoming augmented reality horror, Scrylight, will be a "fully immersive, 360 degree ghost hunting experience" that will not just turn your own home into a haunted house, but also interact with your real-life smart lights and doorbells, too....

smeg,

Granting a third party full access to all the questionably-secured devices in your home is the real horror

smeg,

You know what they say, the S in IoT stands for Security!

smeg,

Incredible effort. As the great scholar Cave Johnson said, “science isn’t about why, it’s about why not?

smeg,

You could probably do it way more simply with emulation, but it seems the point of this technical exercise was to do it all with original hardware (which is pretty cool)

smeg,

I’m capable of computing logical operations, that doesn’t make me a computer

smeg,

Touché

smeg,

Isn’t CoD supposed to be the “realistic shooter”? Things have changed a bit since I was fighting in WW2 a decade ago…

smeg,

If it’s a first-person view then I just want to point the stick in the direction I want to look. If its a third-person view then I’m moving the camera so you need inversion.

Stadia's death spiral, according to the Google employee in charge of mopping up after its murder (www.pcgamer.com) angielski

A statement from a Google employee, Dov Zimring, has been released as a part of the FTC vs Microsoft court case (via 9to5Google). Only minorly redacted, the statement gives us a run down of Google's position leading up to Stadia's closure and why, ultimately, Stadia was in a death spiral long before its actual demise....

smeg,

I don’t think the people downvoting you have ever experienced the pain of dealing with Windows in a cloud environment

smeg,

Oh wow, I’ll have to have a read up

Microsoft May Exit Gaming Business If Game Pass Subscribers off Console Don't Increase Enough by 2027 (wccftech.com) angielski

Spencer said in no uncertain terms that Microsoft could exit the gaming business if this projection became reality. Microsoft needs the light green and blue segments (PC and cloud) to get much larger and much faster by fiscal year 2027, or it could opt out of the business altogether....

most gamers spend $300 a year on games
