Adding a bit more to the discussion on whether game subscription can be “the future”, it looks like despite the heavy push made in the past decade, subscriptions only make up 10% of total video game spending in the US....
I think almost all “big name” AAA games that announce a new game will be over-hyped, and over-hype makes people disappointed. The higher they fly, the harder they fall; look at everything Blizzard, Bethesda, CDPR, and all the big names have released in the last few years - people expecting something better than their favourite game will always be disappointed!
I recently played Alien Isolation, and I noticed all of the “hacking” she does on doors and computers are different types of games, like press the button at the right time, or match the images within a timer, etc....
FYI half of the game’s content is probably locked behind social interaction. Maybe that’s a bad way of phrasing it, it’s more like there are lots of different areas of the game (farming, exploring, dungeoneering, and socialising) and they all unlock more bits in the other areas. Either way you probably had a bad time as you were only getting a small slice of the game (though obviously that’s fine if you weren’t going to enjoy it anyway!)
Sales follow the tradition of supply and demand. Products come out at their highest price because of expectations and hype. Then, as interest wanes, the publisher continues to make some sales by reducing price to tempt the less interested parties....
“Online games will now be banned from giving players rewards if they log in every day, if they spend on the game for the first time or if they spend several times on the game consecutively. All are common incentive mechanisms in online games.”
Personally, apparently 71% of my gaming time was spent on FFXIV. Although in my defense, most games I’ve played this year were on GOG or old free stuff from Epic I finally got around to.
The root cause of so many of these layoffs is overspending. It’s also often, ironically, overspending linked to success. Gaming boomed during the pandemic when most of us were locked up at home with nothing to do, so companies saw currency signs in their eyes and jumped in on it.
Literally discussed in the article. The people’s revolution is not upon us, comrade!
I’ve seen this posted before, but how does that make their stats look good? Oh you’ve got X million users! And how much money did you make? Oh. So how many of your users have ever paid you any money? Oh.
I assume their logic is to give you free games so you get into the habit of looking at their storefront and going to their launcher to play your games in the hope that you’ll start buying your games from there instead. I can’t see how claiming the freebies but never giving them money helps them.
I remember trying to play Magicka a decade ago and I couldn’t even get it to run, but it worked perfectly when I played it again recently. Maybe it’s just very flaky, but I’d recommend trying it again when you’ve got a new machine to try because it is really fun!
I’m now annoyed that I heard huge amounts of baseless speculation at the time but then nothing about this well-presented conclusion of the whole issue. I’d say that technically Nintendo still aren’t ‘going after emulation’ as they know they don’t have any legal leg to stand on, so that stern letter is all they can really do!
I’m starting to find that HUDs in games clutter the screen and take away from being fully immersed in the game. I like games that force you to pay attention to what’s going on in the game and not numbers/markers on the edges of the display. What are some of your favorite games to play with no HUD? Here are a few of mine:...
People get immersed in different ways. Some people get involved in the story, putting themselves in the character’s shoes and imagining it’s a real world. Some people get lost in the gameplay, enjoying the mechanics and focusing entirely on completing the challenge. For some people it’s TV, film, books, or just chatting at the pub and losing track of time. I’m sure you get immersed in something!
Something about the narration just sounds a little… off, like it’s a bit robotic and slowed down. Is this just this channel’s style, or is it some chatbot-generated text-to-speech thing?
Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is coming to Netflix on December 14 for Netflix members on the App Store, Google Play, and in the Netflix mobile app.
They obviously have been thinking about in-app purchases, ads, and extra fees.
I know gamers have a lot to be cynical about, but seeing an announcement that specifically says “without any ads, in-app purchases, or extra fees” and taking that as evidence of the opposite is a bit of a stretch!
Lots of companies have products that exist just to compete with a rival’s product and keep the pressure on them, I’m sure Microsoft has plenty of products that exist just so they have the “you know we could drop this deal we have with you at any point and use our own version, so offer us a good deal”. I imagine they’ll keep the xbox around even if the likes of Sony and Nintendo do support game pass just so Microsoft have always got that bargaining chip of “alright then, we’ll run it on our own machine” if the others decide they want to change the terms of the deal.
They’ve been making people redundant left right and centre for the last few years. They overstretched and overhired after going public and are now being bitten by recession and terrible decisions, of which the recent licence fiasco is just one.
Rosalina’s story is incredibly sad. Mine was the end of Undertale (when you get to the house). The music in both was a huge contributor to the sadness.
That’s… a bold decision. Who pays for the rights to a well-known character/IP with lots of fans and then decides they want to attract a new audience instead? Guessing it was pretty poorly received?
I found this so interesting that I then went and watched the full version, absolutely fascinating view into how you make a video game in the brave new 3d world of the 90s!
I can understand invisible walls to stop you going off the map, or little “airlock” areas to hide a loading zone, but what is the point of this other than filler?
While many great puzzle games have a fixed number of levels, I’d like to find more with procedurally-generated levels to maximize replay value. Aside from Minesweeper games, so far I’ve found the following ones:...
Ubisoft says it was trying to put an ad for Assassin’s Creed Mirage in the main menu of other Assassin’s Creed games. However, a “technical error” caused the promotion to show up on in-game menus instead.
There’s nothing accidental (or “accidental”) about the ad being in the game. Probably was an accident that it appeared mid-game, they need to desensitise you to ads in the menus first.
Did anyone else find that CotL was a bit unbalanced? I had already maxed every unlockable ability and built a massive farm cult by the time I was about halfway through the dungeons, which made the rest of the game a bit anticlimactic as I didn’t need to do any more resource management. Hoping this expansion deals with that, if so I’d love to give it another go!
I think it would have been better if there was some limit as to how much cult time you had between each dungeon run, but there’s nothing stopping you (in fact I felt encouraged!) spending a while using your resources to build new things and making all your cultists happy every time you go back to the cult.
This is actually great content. I don’t come hear to read about which investor group has bought some video game developer, I come here for surprisedly well-researched shitposts like this which make me sensible chuckle.
