ABCDE, w PlayStation’s first Remote Play dedicated device, PlayStation Portal remote player, to launch later this year at $199.99

It’s… Okay. Some may find a use but it’s still extraneous to most people. If it had something unique I could understand it.

papalonian, w PlayStation’s first Remote Play dedicated device, PlayStation Portal remote player, to launch later this year at $199.99

So it's aimed at people that already own a console attached to their TV, but want to play it as a handheld, and can't take it out of the house to keep playing?

But I thought the Wii U sold poorly. Why would they make another one?

jdeath, w Starfield – Official Live Action Trailer

why is it live action? is the game footage bad or something? I’m struggling to understand

Pyr_Pressure,

Because they’ve already made a bunch of money from pre-orders they can waste a bunch of it on a trailer instead of the game.

I don’t doubt there’s a market for this, I just wish for $200 it had more use cases than just “PS5 controller with a screen”. I have a Steam Deck with Chiaki4deck installed for this and while it does cost 2x, it’s a proper gaming machine and a computer.

I wonder what the internals are, and if it’s moddable.

games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming, are not supported.

Would have been cool if they figured out a way to stream those games directly to the Portal.

EDIT: Looks like it runs Android, with Google’s services removed. androiddev.social/…/110939834517107216. Wasn’t aware that there were leaks that confirmed this.

Schaedelbach,

I am pretty sure they know how to get proper cloud streaming going. Even the Vita has it. But why would they? So some people who don’t own a PS5 get this thing and then don’t buy more games and just stream their PS plus games? I can’t imagine they would make much money that way!

Corkyskog,

Isn’t every company making most of their money off their subscription services anyway? Why do they care if I buy a PS5 or not, they literally lose over $50 every time they sell a console. Maybe I am just weird, but I have a PS subscription and have only bought two games… COD for my wife and GTA.

If anything, the smartest play would to require an extra subscription for the device to stream.

Disgustoid, w Atari Announces Modernized 2600 Console (Releasing Nov 17th)

I’m an old dude who actually had the original Atari 2600 and 7800 as a kid and loved playing games on them. I finished Pitfall 2 FFS. Those games have exactly zero appeal to me today.

I’m not entirely sure who this new hardware is supposed to appeal to. Would Atari 2600 purists go for this given the price tag and emulated games?

dan1101, w PlayStation’s first Remote Play dedicated device, PlayStation Portal remote player, to launch later this year at $199.99

I found that Steam Link didn’t work very well over wifi, hopefully this does something different. Still, $199.99 to play your existing PS5 on a smaller screen seems like a lot to ask.

@notst@lemmy.world avatar

Remote play on Steam Deck (and previously on the Steam Link) works fine for me, if the PC is connected via Ethernet while the Deck/Link is connected via WiFi. There’s no discernable inlut lag for most games. But half the time I run into random issues with controllers not being recognized properly or sound cutting out. It’s such a disappointment.

thedrivingcrooner,
@thedrivingcrooner@lemmy.world avatar

I tried playing the Ascent from wired in computer onto my Steam Deck and it was laggy AF. I had everything on the lowest settings and it was barely playable. Idk if the Steam Deck is expected to be plugged into the router too but I was sitting right next to it.

jukibom,

A good WiFi 6 mesh network can do wonders here! I can stream steamvr games to a quest 2 on the other side of the house with really very minimal latency. Regular games to the living room TV are even better (both the host and client see the WiFi mesh pods as Ethernet)

priapus,

I’ve always had a good experience over WiFi. You might just need a better AP or less interference

iforgotmyinstance,

My main issues with Steam Link is that I have to adjust settings when I swap platforms. If I go from my 34inch screen to my Steamdeck, I gotta change everything manually to fit the Steamdeck’s diminished capability.

  • TheAlbacor,

If you at for the sub they should let you play those games on the new device. It’s otherwise $200 to do nothing unless you get the console.

    Blizzard,

    local streaming

WTF? This is worst than I anticipated, because cloud streaming was meh, but this? Are they serious? Who’s going to buy it? Honestly this is so lame, I’m speechless…

    RegularGoose,

So it isn’t even a real handheld, then? Seems like it’s just a thing for people who can’t put a game down long enough to take a shit, and can afford a PS5, but not therapy.

They’ll be targeting ibs sufferers in their marketing.

McDuders, w Delta Force - Gameplay Trailer | gamescom 2023

My Dad still plays the original Delta Force to this day. I’d be surprised if anyone else has heard of this series before this trailer.

    fartsparkles,

We’re not all teens on Lemmy lol. The Delta Force game engine was ground breaking at the time; it used voxels to render terrain meaning the draw distance was huge and enabled sniping each other over hundreds of meters (previously unheard of).

Sadly this new game doesn’t appear to carry the “tactical shooter” banner in the slightest.

You should spin up a co-op modded server and play a few missions with your dad to make his day.

    FracturedEel,

I used to play a demo from a pc gamer magazine demo disc over and over but it was just like one mission

    fartsparkles,

Sums up my PS1 days. Official PlayStation Magazine demo disks were pretty much all I played. The timed Resident Evil 2 demo (something like 10 minutes) was the ultimate challenge as I had convinced myself the whole game was there and I just had to speedrun my ass through it asap.

    Good times.

sugar_in_your_tea, w Atari Announces Modernized 2600 Console (Releasing Nov 17th)

That’s pretty cool. I grew up with an Atari 2600 at home and still think about some of the games today. I remember distinctly playing Parachute (I actually remade this for a personal project) and Pitfall, as well as a handful of others. I also had an NES, and those were pretty much my only consoles until much later when we got a Sega Genesis and later I bought an OG Xbox.

However, I won’t be buying this. They should instead just sell an actual emulator for PC and sell a bundle of games to go with it. Maybe sell each game for $1-2, maximum $5, and maybe offer a Switch port as well.

But I don’t want to pay $130 for single use hardware, that’s just dumb.

    Tronn4,

There is the atari 40th anniversary game for the switch. That’s good enough for me

    rocky1138,

They own Ant Steam as far as I know, so your desires are already met.

    sugar_in_your_tea,

Are you talking about this Antstream? It’s not released , but I’ll have to check it out when it is.

    @Supervisor194@lemmy.world avatar

lol $29 for 2600 Berserk? Look, I’m all for nostalgia, but the 2600 wasn’t even a good game console on the day it was released. Why don’t they showcase any 7800 games? At least those are much more like real arcade games. 2600 Berserk isn’t worth 29 cents, much less dollars.

    zabby, w Killing Floor 3 - Official Reveal Trailer | gamescom 2023

From what I’ve played Killing Floor 2 is at the top of my list when it comes to satisfying gunplay. The original was lots of fun too. As long as this one keeps up the quality, it seems like it is hard for them to fail, right?
