Looks interesting, kinda like Deep Rock Galactic mixed with LotR and Minecraft.

That looked incredibly boring. If you told me it was footage from a skyrim mod from ten years ago I’d believe you.

TheQuietCroc,

You were not exaggerating. It looks more like Minecraft than DRG. I was definitely expecting “Deep Rock Fantastic” but instead it’s more of a survival game than anything.

cerevant, w Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to Xbox ‘this year’

Might be nice if they’d even comment on the Mac version which they supported from day one, but then went silent (beyond saying it was delayed) when it was time for release.

misk,

I was similarly disappointed but IIRC it was delayed to September 6th.

I wonder how will it run in Act 3 since DX11 is so much more performant than Vulkan and I assume they use either MoltenVK or straight Metal. It’s likely the reason for the delay.

cerevant,

9/6 is the PS5 date. Still no word from Larian on the Mac date - the last I heard was when they originally announced it would be delayed, and that they didn’t want to give a date and not meet it. What worries me is that they are willing to give these other dates - PS5 & Xbox - but not even a window for Mac.

They were touted as having their engine running on Metal, and it was one of the first major apps to port to Apple Silicon. The early access worked fine. Unless there was something in the later acts that really broke performance, I can’t see why they didn’t go ahead and release with the engine they had.

I just checked Wikipedia which I think I got it from and it states 9/6 but the link cited as source doesn’t state it anywhere.

grumble

TWeaK,

They probably have no contractual date with Apple, so they’re prioritising the ones where they do. Also, PS5 and Xbox are both probably bigger markets than Mac.

is DX11 more performant?? I’ve been running it using Vulkan this whole time assuming it’d be better omg

misk,

Yeah, it’s surprising since it should have lower CPU overhead. Here’s Digital Foundry analysis: youtu.be/V9Kc8025H7U

slimerancher, w Rami Ismail on why hits like BG3 lead to fewer funded games in genre: “Everything that’s successful tightens the noose” | Game World Observer
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

“We’re literally stuck in a system where funding decides what gets made, everything that’s successful tightens the noose, and everything that’s unsuccessful is used as proof that we shouldn’t make more like it,” Ismail noted.

“So if you think things are bad now, wait until you see what’s coming, because as things get forced under larger & larger money-umbrellas for not being able to compete with Genshin/DFO/League /Roblox/etc., they’ll have to care more about promising money with whatever they do make.”

Basically, he is saying nothing can beat free-to-play games like Genshin and Roblox, which are earning tons through micro transactions. As for the quote in title, the second part says if you fail it will also lead to fewer games funded in genre.

He also says:

So I don’t know what the answer is & I’ve been looking for it as if my career depends on it because it kinda does. What I do know is that to get better, it’ll either take a full collapse of the industry, or “shorter games with worse graphics made by people paid more to work less”

In other words, as a gamer (specially if you don’t play those free-to-play games), there is nothing you can do.

dudewitbow,

I also find it funny he talks about risk, litterally, if Genshin Impact wasnt a success, Mihoyo would have went under. Blaming another company who was willing to take the risk of bellying up is a dumb stance to have just because you wanted to play it safe.

geosoco,

Thanks for pulling that out.

I get his general frustration with the F2P and making bank on microtransactions, but I think the Larian story somewhat contradicts that even though the road to BG2 was long and difficult. They've slowly been refining the work since the 90s and you can see this reflected in the reviews their games got. Sure, BG3 with that scale was still a risk, but it's built on so much knowledge they've built from the Divinity series that at least some of that seems mitigated.

Blackdoomax,

Couldn’t you bet on the full collapse of the industry by not spending money on it anymore (and better, by pirating them when possible)?

BaskinRobbins, w Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 - The First Preview | gamescom 2023

I randomly just decided to play and beat the first one a couple months ago for the first time. This is awesome timing!

pimento64, w Rami Ismail on why hits like BG3 lead to fewer funded games in genre: “Everything that’s successful tightens the noose” | Game World Observer

The solution is clear: ban all microtransactions.

dan1101, w No Man's Sky Echoes Update Trailer

I wish I liked this game. It is exactly the sort of game I like, with seamless planetary landings and such. But I just have no enthusiasm for it.

meepmeep,

As wide as an ocean, as deep as a puddle sadly.

WhiteTiger,
@WhiteTiger@sh.itjust.works avatar

As soon as you’ve been to like 5 planets, you’ve experienced everything. At least they have base building I guess. Too bad their VR port was trash.

Saledovil,

And a lot of the features don’t have a reason to engage with them. E.g. Vehicles. You get a spaceship at the start, so most of the vehicles you get later are very much a downgrade. And that Exo Mech which had an entire update dedicated to it. To me, it just illustrated why mecha are a silly concept, namely everything you can do with them can be done better with other vehicles. The game is basically a toybox, and none of the toys really keep my attention.

orbitz,

Just wanted to comment that land vehicles have their purpose because take off in the ship takes a noticeable amount of fuel (though not as bad as it used to be) It’s not bad but you can drive around to get resources in vehicle much easier (assuming you’re trying to explore a bit). Not saying you’re completely wrong or anything, once you get so far you rarely need to go resource gathering anyways.

Base building is kinda fun if you’re into it (plus you get to build the inside of your freighter like a base) and there’s lots of missions and a decent chunk of story somewhere in there. It’s pretty shallow but more like a wading pool than a puddle at least. It’s fun to relax with and wander but I tend to lose interest before I can find the new ships and all so haven’t even got a living ship yet had it since release.

dan1101,

That’s what they say about Elite Dangerous, but I played that game 254 hours. No Man’s Sky held me for maybe 5 or 10.

FracturedEel,

I got really into for like 100 hours way after they fixed everything and then I see these cool updates but don’t really have any interest in touching it again

stappern,

Because it’s still not good.

Wish I could play all my legally bought games on any computer without publishers and developers having a say so.

kadu,
@kadu@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I still can’t get over how GeForce Now is quite literally renting a computer… yet a developer can choose to lock your own purchase away from you, and demand an extra fee.

In fact, I’m quite sure it is illegal here - but the kind of nebulous grey area where someone crazy enough would have to endure the long legal process and get a judge to agree to set the precedent.

Cavemanfreak,

Yeah, it’s mindboggling that developers have any say in this. But for Geforce Now at least you can use Steam and Epic right?

nanoUFO, w Necromancer Career | Official Cinematic Trailer - Warhammer: Vermintide 2
@nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

Fatshark adds content to a mostly dead game. Too bad Vermintide 2 was at it’s core a great game.

scala,

Right? Seems like their priorities are all over the place. No reason for Darktide to be 10 months of next to zero content and now VT2 gets a new class.

FS promised one new class every quarter for Darktide, and none so far.

Though, darktide is coming to Xbox now 😆

Iapar,

I just don’t get what they are doing. I played darktideand it was so much fun. Didn’t bought it because it wasn’t finished and why should I pay for an unfinished despite it being the most fun I had in recent time?

And you are telling me it is still unfinished? Why? Just why?

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Both games are have roughly the same numbers, on Steam anyway https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/582e6206-b811-4784-a7f0-a3e81745a810.webp

The playerbase is still large enough to find matches pretty easily in both cases. Darktide has been such a disappointment I am kind of glad significant updates are still coming to Vermintide 2 (5 new maps, for free, in the last 12 months is pretty good for a 5 years old game).

nanoUFO,
@nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah but we got next to no content first couple years then we got paid class specialties. Still a fun game that I would play if they would get off their ass and make it work on Linux.
