Chev, w I've tested Nvidia's latest ray tracing magic in Cyberpunk 2077 and it's a no-brainer: at worst it's just better-looking, at best it's that and a whole lot more performance

How is the performance getting better (more FPS) when you use the GPU even more?

conciselyverbose,

They say it's because you don't have to do the same denoise with the new algorithm.

BruceTwarzen,

Just buy a 4090, easy

Psythik,

I already did but Cyberpunk is still boring. What am I doing wrong?

undeffeined,

Not the game for you?

Psythik,

You’re probably right. I like RPGs and I love science fiction, but for some reason I just can’t get into Cyberpunk. You’d think I’d enjoy it but nope. The story just doesn’t captivate me and there isn’t much to do outside of the campaign, so…

Reddit_Is_Trash,

From my understanding, this is an optimized method of raytracing. We could expect to see better looks and better performance with each iteration of raytracing. Especially since it’s a relatively new technology for games.

redcalcium,

The new AI-based denoiser probably uses the tensor cores which is severely underutilized on gaming, thus netting extra performance seemingly out of thin air. One of the main criticism of the new Nvidia cards was how much silicon area they use for those RT and AI cores which could’ve been used to improve performance of traditional rendering had Nvidia used the area for standard GPU cores instead. Now it seems Nvidia finally have more ways to utilize those silicon for gaming, though it’s not clear whether they’re finally fully utilized yet (there were reports about how the tensor cores only have 1% utilization even with DLSS frame generation turned on).

Edgelord_Of_Tomorrow,

If they did use that space for raster AMD would be toast right now.

ThunderingJerboa,

I mean it has a place in the market. Even though facebook sucks, they are the leaders/pushers of VR at the moment. No new person wants to spend 1000+ dollars on something they may end up hating especially with the rumors around the quest 3 lite. Like meta makes up about 60% of the market-share of those who take part in the steam hardware survey.

Sethayy,

Very weird way to try and put a positive spin on a monopoly

ThunderingJerboa,
@ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social avatar

So does Pixmax, HTC, Valve, or Pico no longer exist? VR is facing issues with adoption. I'm sorry but to the VR snobs even though I love VR having people argue you can't experience it unless you spend close to a grand on something that many people's feelings towards it are take it or leave it is a bit too much for most consumers. Meta is problematic with buying up so many of the vr game makers but at the end of the day these companies chose to sell themselves and lets be honest here the VR market isn't hot right now and prior it was fucking worse.

Sethayy,

Yk a monopoly can stilll have competition and be a monopoly right?

And like by definition buying up all the competition is monopolistic, no matter if the companies wanna sell or not, they were influenced by the size of meta (and their financial backing), which gave them an unfair advantage against the competition. Entirely unrelated to hardware or software, both of which are dogshit in comparison - they were able to take a market share cause they can undercut all the competitors, exactly why their headsets are cheap.

Cmon man have like a single thought for yourself that ain’t propaganda

ThunderingJerboa,
@ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social avatar

The irony of saying "Cmon man have like a single thought for yourself that ain’t propaganda" while just defaulting to "FaCeBoOk BaD" is peak. I already made mention of how facebook or whatever they are called is shit but you have to be braindead to see before meta entered the scene, VR was dead in the water. So yeah they tried to establish their little stupid metaverse thing and it thankfully failed. You aren't even addressing my point of no consumer wants to pay 1000 fucking bucks on something they likely hate. Most consumers drop off hard on VR. So cheap headsets are a net good thing for VR, even though the cunts who make them are dick heads.

Game devs aren't just going to be developing games if there is no fucking audience to play/buy them. So yeah many of those devs got bought out since Meta was the only one handing money out for VR related tech/games. It was a devil's bargin as shown with Echo VR and many others but I can't fault the devs since getting food on the table pretty fucking important than sticking with the values of some idiot VR snobs who think the only way VR should work is via pc connection on a pc that is valued in the 1k to 2k range on top of the previously mentioned VR headset that can set you back another 1k to 2k. Like I have the opportunity to have a pc in that range and I see how the quest 2 is very inferior to many other headsets but you have to be a fucking moron to invest thousands on something you will play with for a fucking week. So I'm thankful Meta (who is likely spying on its users) gave me an opportunity to try out VR at a "decent" price so now I know I'm into it and can invest further into the industry but nah. You stick with your idiotic groupthink of "MeTa BaD" when I will say I'm glad exist since people can take advantage of this deal and see if they want to further invest in the medium. I can't wait for they to die out but I ain't looking a gift horse in the mouth when they are ones who are the only pushers of VR right now. Apple doesn't give a shit about gaming and while Sony pushes out a pretty damn good headset, they don't let you use them on PC where most of the enthusiasts are. Console players don't want to spend the price of the console they are playing on to possibly play a handful of games with little support afterwards.

conciselyverbose, (edited )

Their position in the market is a big part of a reason the market is dogshit.

They came in, bought everything, turned it into a fucking disaster, and are now poised to abandon it.

detalferous,

You nailed it. Exactly.

ThunderingJerboa,
@ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social avatar

Sucks they bought up most things but those devs chose that option and I can't fault them since lets be honest here, VR market is utter garbage, there is very little money in it. I don't like meta, they fucking suck but the quest series has basically provided the option of the common person to actually try vr. Not many people want to spend close to 1k to 2k on a thing they will maybe fucking hate. I wouldn't say they are the sole reason its dogshit but the reality is people need an entry point headset. The market wasn't providing that and now that it does, people can finally get into VR even though it may lead to technical downgrades since the market is targeting those users.

Hell even though the PSVR 2 is a fantastic headset, most console gamers aren't going to spend more money on a peripheral than they actually spend on the console they are playing it on. Hell I would love Sony to give the drivers to PSVR 2 to pc players since shit a bang for your buck for specs but that ain't happening.

glimpseintotheshit,

I don’t like Meta for a lot of reasons but without them VR would probably be fucking dead by now. Yes, Zucks Metaverse is absolute garbage but the stuff Reality Labs is doing thanks to Metas funding is absolutely amazing.

I gave up on VR for years after buying a Rift in 2017 because it was a janky, horrible to set up, tethered, nausea inducing mess that i paid what, 700 bucks for?

Recently got a used Quest 2 for 200 bucks and it’s fucking amazing. Completely wireless, hand tracking, much better clarity and i can stay in VR for hours without feeling sick.

I wish they would push high quality content a bit more like they used to instead of their shitty Horizon stuff but if it wasn’t for the millions of headsets they sold, no one would be able to develop shit right now for VR.

To say they ruined VR is absolutely delusional imo, sorry.

conciselyverbose,

You got it for $200 because you're paying with your privacy. It's an absolute dumpster fire of a deal that's not remotely worth it. They could pay you $100/hour to play it and requiring an account with them, in and of itself, makes it the worst possible theoretical version of VR.

Facebook is absolutely the reason VR is fucking terrible. Their involvement, in and of itself, completely destroyed the community, many of whom abandoned the space entirely when they took away viable options to replace with privacy invading crimes against humanity. Turning enthusiasts from advocates into activists against their product is the reason there's no money left.

glimpseintotheshit,

I’m not paying anything, my Quest runs completely offline. I use a separate router for streaming and the Quest is mac address blocked in my main router (just to be sure). ALVR is side loaded onto the Quest so i can play Steam VR games without the need for the Oculus app on my PC at all. It’s not that hard to do if you care about your privacy.

I’m not exactly sure which community they “completely destroyed” but your whole reasoning for that sounds extremely subjective to me. Facebook controls 90% of the VR market, followed by Pico with 4.5%, which is basically a Chinese reverse engineered Quest with ports of Quest games.

www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS49422922

Without FB there is no VR market and there is no scenario where Oculus could have managed to sell a similar amount of headsets if Facebook hadn’t bought them.

That being said, i sincerely hope Facebook loses this race and I am pretty terrified of the future when it comes to VR.

First and foremost, if Itsuno-san doesn’t have time to be the director of the game, it can’t really get made. So having an opportunity to have him spend the time he needed on the game and being able to bring together the other resources needed, such as a large team to work on a game with this scope, just took some years for that all to really fit together. And then once it did, we got started.

It’s a shame that this game got written of by so many people due to its shaky launch. The game’s story and side quests are good and most of the game breaking stuff has been fixed. The visuals and art direction are great so it’s nice to see it getting support for new technologies even if no one can run them.

AsAnAILanguageModel,

Yeah I think it’s mostly a meme now. Either you read comments from people who loved it, or jokes from people who haven’t played it. I had no expectations before playing it and liked it so much that I even preordered the DLC, to show my support. (I don’t care about the preorder bonus, and I don’t think preordering games is reasonable, but I’m gonna play it right away anyway, so it doesn’t matter in this case)

orbitz,

I never noticed many bugs and had 93 hours in the game under two starts, never finished it though, to be fair I don’t finish most games so not much of a difference there. Was playing today and was reminded how gorgeous it is. I love cyberpunk as a genre and have a half decent video card (3070) and the neon, reflections, smoke all look like some of the best of not the best I’ve seen in my 39ish years of gaming. The downside is at 1080p (yeah I know) is the hair looks distorted/crimped close up (mostly bangs and end of the hair) but still looks better overall than any hair I recall and the rest is all eye candy.

Oh guess I should add, it really does feel like a cyberpunk world should, least to me. The setting is perfect for me but I’m sure there’s flaws I haven’t noticed.

Exactly. I wonder if it’s possible to make a commercial game that’s fully decentralized. Sell the licenses as NFTs, use activitypub for the masterserver so you just toot out your games, release the game and dedicated server as free binaries. I hate NFTs but they’d be more consumer-rights friendly than the current approach of steam owns everything.

mindbleach,

Seriously, it’s a four-player game. Not some MMO clusterfuck. Not an arena shooter bragging about 128 codblops on a single map, like it’s Stand On Nuketown. You need matchmaking - you want anticheat - you’ll do some DRM bullshit. Other than that you should want to offload bandwidth and latency to your players. They’re all on the same team!

  • Become Pirate Legend
  • Earn rep and gold for Athena’s Fortune and Reaper’s Bones
  • Hourglass Faction Battles
  • Captain your Own Ship
  • Sail as part of a Guild
  • Sail as Trading Company Emissary
  • Live Events

Safer Seas:

  • Progress up to Level 40
  • Gold and Rep at reduced rate
  • Seasonal Renown at same rate
  • All Tall Tales
  • Commendations, achievements, cosmetics yadda yadda…

Lame. They couldn’t just go for optional PvE servers, they have to lock most of the content in PvP servers. Guess I’m still not playing it

CancerMancer,

Yeah they’re going to do the absolute bare minimum they can to bring in pve players without actually giving them what they want as if this game isn’t dead af

mordack550,

The sad thing for us is that we always wanted to have a private server, not a solo mode. I want to mess around with my friends with multiple boats. I don’t care about playing in a galleon, let me play 4 solo sloops with my friends!

glitches_brew,

Kinda surprised safe mode has commendations… Sounds like getting the gold curse just got a lot easier.

Fraylor,

The challenge was never in the pvp. It was stomaching each of the tall tales that many fucking times.

Fraylor,

I have about 600 hours in SOT so I can answer this.

So honestly that’s a TON of progression without risk, but it’ll be slow going. Emissaries allow you to increase your rewards for a particular faction (reapers, hoarders, merchants, order of souls) so you can’t get those bonuses.

You need to be a pirate legend to captian a ship, and you need three of the primary factions at level 50 to become a pirate legend. Literally no difference beyond achievements and cosmetics. Captaincy just let’s you “own” the ship that spawns in, and essentially designates a player as “leader” whereas in normal play its ad hoc on who does what. And a captained ship just has a name and extra cosmetics anyway.

Can’t earn rep for reapers which kinda sucks, but makes sense. It’s the pvp faction. But many players do pve reapers as well.

I’d say safer seas covers about 75%.

merc,

Also a bit concerned about the “Captain your own ship” bit…

My guess is they mean that if you’re doing the Safer Seas stuff, you get a standard ship and you can customize how it looks (sails, cannons, etc.) from the NPCs in the harbour but you don’t get to name the ship, and any customizations you do aren’t saved for the next time.

If you do the High Seas, you can buy a ship, name it, and unlock lots of customizations (more than standard ones) which are saved with the ship, so they’re there next time you log in and select that ship.

I don’t know about the other current major advantage of a captained ship, which is currently being able to unload all your treasure and sell it extremely quickly. Without that you need to dock, then manually run all the skulls to the skull guys, all the trade goods to the trade guys, all the treasure to the treasure guys, etc.

merc,

Honestly, most of the time it’s not PvP heavy, instead it’s dead. I play with some cousins and we’ve had 3 hour sessions where we’ve only occasionally seen other people through the spyglass. When we do encounter other people about half the time they aren’t interested in PvP either.

Having said that, unwelcome PvP at the wrong time can spoil a gaming session. Like, you can be attacked when you’re at the end of a long quest chain and lose hundreds of thousands worth of gold in treasure.

RGB3x3, w Five Years After Launch, Sea of Thieves Is Finally Getting a Solo Mode - IGN

I wanted to like the game so badly because it looked like so much fun.

But my brother and I spent 29 minutes getting a treasure just to be steamrolled by a group of three more experienced players that killed us and took our shit.

I get that it’s the point of piracy, but it’s not much fun to spend 20 minutes accomplishing nothing. There’s a reason piracy is illegal in real life.

Maybe this new mode will let me enjoy the world they’ve built a bit more

mordack550,

20 minutes? You are lucky! Me and my friends wasted entire afternoons of gametime because of insanely aggressive and skilled pvp crews. That’s the reason i quit the game, i just cannot handle to waste many hours every time a pvp crew targets me.

merc,

The balance is just way off.

If you’re a PvP pirate you’re never really risking anything. You’re probably carrying a few hundred cannonballs (5k gold?), some wood and some food. If you are sunk, you get your ship back fully repaired for free and lose only the cannonballs, wood and food. If you sink someone carrying treasure, you get their entire haul and just have to get to any port to sell it.

If you’re a PvE pirate returning from a quest, you don’t really get your quest rewards until you get back to port with your treasure. If you lose to a PvP pirate all that time questing was for nothing. If you fight a PvP focused pirate and win, all you win is some cannonballs, while you have the potential to lose all your treasure, the result of hours of game time.

Having said that, if you’re a PvP focused pirate, you’re going to be bored a lot. The game world is very empty so you’re going to spend a lot of time sailing around, hoping to find someone to grief. If you fly a reaper flag people can see you on the map and steer clear of you. If you’re a PvE focused pirate, it’s easy to find something to do, so you can have a great time sailing around, having adventures… until you run into a PvP player.

The game should really be changed so that PvP focused players have an easier time finding other players to fight. Meanwhile, people doing PvE content should have something significant to gain if they ever beat a PvP player. If they choose to turn and run, there should be safe harbours where they can unload in peace.
