Definitely Shadow of the Erdtree! I’ve already beaten the Dancing Lion boss. Just started playing WoW Classic again too and found a guild filled with super nice people. So that’s been fun.

Skate 3 EarthBound Skyrim Oblivion Quake 1/2/3 Mario 64 Super Mario World Battlefield 1943 (RIP 😞) Fallout 76 DayZ Vampire Survivors

These are just a few. I cycle through games a lot.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

It’s top tier fun. I come back to it routinely and make a bunch of ridiculous skate videos. Never gets old.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

You can get it used pretty cheap. I have it for the Xbox 360 and downloaded it once I finally got an Xbox X.

orca,

Quake 3 if you wanna go old school. Pretty much anything will run it these days and you can easily spin up a local server for it. You can do FFA or play on teams.

Rocket League is always fun IMO. Good to blow off steam and not have to focus on story.

Steam Deck Owners: What’s been your favorite game that you first discovered on Steam Deck and now you can’t seem to put down?

Looking for those games that you may have heard about but never tried until you got a Deck. Or old games on systems you never had that you’re trying for the first time. Or new AAA games that just released in the last year or two that you picked up for the first time specifically to play on Steam Deck and have kept you glued to...

I installed 1,000 old game ROMs for NES, SNES, Sega Genesis/Master System, N64, and PS1. I’ve been reliving all of my childhood games since I got it. Road Rash on the PS1 was one I never played (and forgot existed) until my wife told me about it. What a blast.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Oh, no haha. It was just nice to have them as categories in the Steam app alongside my 250+ PC games.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Yeah! I binged that game when I found it. Completed the whole story and then started another playthrough.

I saw recent studies show that Facebook is no longer cool to younger generations, and the older generations are either not remotely interested in VR, and/or aren’t interested in Meta out of principle (security, ethics, etc). I know that’s hand-wavy and anecdotal, but I’m trying to gather who is going to buy these in big enough numbers to make them profitable. Probably just another vector that they want to hoard your data from.

orca,

Wow, this game looks awesome!

I dumped a ton of hours into Battlefield 3, and the Bad Company games. Now in terms of BF, I mostly play Battlefield 1943. I tried 2042 but immediately hated it. They gutted the game of everything that made the series so good.

Totally going to snatch this one, thanks!

I used to play Urban Terror a ton back in the day. Not a massive game like BF and BattleBit but it’s a super fun shooter (and it’s free!).

‘Call of Duty’ Doesn’t Just Depict Bad History—It’s Pro-War Propaganda (progressive.org)

I just started playing COD Black Ops Cold War because I got it through my PlayStation Plus subscription and wanted to try it out. I’ve previously played some others like Modern Warfare (1 and 2) and WWII. While it always felt a bit over the top and propaganda-ish, I really liked it for the blockbuster feeling and just turning...

It also means players get rugpulled whenever the suits decide the game is no longer worth maintaining.

I see we’ve teleported back into the 1990s during the violent video games scare among parents. Gotta make excuses instead of, you know, actually facing the real problems.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I’ve been playing the first one on my Steam Deck so this is good timing.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Yeah, it’s wonderful. I was playing it for nearly 2 hours straight on a flight recently. If you adjust the CPU clock speed and a couple other things, you can squeeze some solid play time out of the Deck with Zero Dawn. It runs amazingly smooth.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

There’s an official dock you can get for it. I have one and it’s awesome. Has a USB-C for power, HDMI, and 2 regular USB ports for peripherals. It even has an Ethernet port.

What was the worst game that comes to mind from your time writing? I used to write album reviews for a metal site years ago and one of our writers got HIM’s latest album at the time. They really just didn’t like the album and I shit you not, the review garnered 1,000+ comments from pissed off fans. It got so out of hand, we had to close comments.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Man, DN4E sat in limbo forever. I remember waiting patiently for it knowing full well it would be a mess, but I didn’t care because I was such a massive Duke Nukem fan. Definitely on my list of bad games but I managed to complete it. It was so dated and clunky.

I vaguely remember Brink and all of the hype absolutely vanishing when it came out. I think I ended up skipping it because of the feedback people had.

Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, maybe the 2,062 cheese wheels I have stored in my house could be bugging things out but I doubt it.

I’m envious that you get to experience it for the first time. The Quake games are so worth it. Quake 3 becomes more arena-based but is an absolute blast to play online against people. It was a good chunk of my gaming life. 1 and 2 are FPS royalty. Simple and to the point.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I played the Quake games originally on the PC, but they’re great with a controller. Just dial the sensitivity in and you’re good. That’s always my concern because I mostly play on consoles now too, but Id and Bethesda put a lot of care into their gamepad layouts and settings.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Adding on, if you haven’t played the System Shock remake yet, I highly recommend it!

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I will happily continue to not pay for games that do this and I won’t be missing out on anything.

This is on par with restaurants that microwave garbage food. They’re phoning it in to squeeze as much profit as possible out of the product. That tells me you don’t want to make games people enjoy, you want to make games that do nothing but maximize profit. I ain’t here for that shit. I’m willing to pay money for companies that respect art and trades, not ones that worship capitalism and exist to appease assholes in suits.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I’ll be playing it via GamePass and can try to report back once I have some hours under my belt in it.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

BG3 like everyone else seems to be, the System Shock remake, and I started replaying Half Life 2 and Dishonored recently. Just got a Steam Deck so it’s been fun being able to play all of my Steam games wherever I want.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I had a Q3 server running for a while that I’d hop in and out of. It was funny knowing that it had bots on it just endlessly fighting each other. I miss the Instagib and Urban Terror days.

What are some game genres / styles you like that aren't being made anymore, or are being mde but not very often? angielski

For me it’s first person puzzle games. I can think of maybe a dozen off the top of my head that came out in the last decade. I especially enjoy when they’re open world. The ability to just quit a puzzle that’s stumped you and go try something else for a little bit is incredibly refreshing.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Legend of Grimrock 1 and 2 are good ones. I’m sure you’ve come across those ones though.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Yep. The bottom logo looks slightly like the new X.com one from a distance though.

orca,

Diablo 4 with my wife, and replaying GTA V. Both have been a lot of fun.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

The benefit to the radio stations in game is that you get the silly commercials and commentary too. I like the whole package together. Sometimes I’ll drive around while just listening too, which is fun.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

My dad and I used to play 7th Guest together. What a classic! It’s been a long time since I played that one. Had it on CD-ROM. Now I need to go find the soundtrack.

Anyone else remember those giant scale maps that used to be in shooters? e.g. bathroom, kitchen, office, backyard, that made you feel so tiny? angielski

I miss those so much. Any modern games still playing with this concept? I remember Half Life had the bathroom, kitchen, and office, and I remember a backyard one in Quake 3 that was really cool.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I get old school Quake vibes from this. I love it.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I used to play a ton of Quake 3 Rails only Instagib! I was hosting a Q3 server for a while not long ago, but just didn’t have the time to dedicate to it. Might be fun to spin up again. It would run 24/7 with bots so I’d just hop in and out during lunch downtime or something.

What a throwback.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Wow, for the first time! Such a great experience. The goofiness adds charm. So many of my best and weirdest moments are from that game.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I started replaying Grand Theft Auto V since it was added to GamePass. Aggalos, Sword and Fairy: Together Forever, Tunic, and started replaying The Elder Scrolls Online.

I’ve been all over the place lately, haha.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Checkout Somerville. It has its quirks, but I loved it overall. If you’re familiar with the game Out of This World (often referred to as Another World and vice versa), you’ll probably dig it.

Another one I recommend is Planet of Lana. Lovely little story and easy gameplay. This one really grabbed me and was an enjoyable, short playthrough.

I went through a similar period. Played a handful of easy-to-pick-up short adventure games.
