They went downhill since Morrowind… it was their last game that managed to capture players on its own merits, with zero mods.
People forget that Bethesda used to be a sports and arcade game developer back in the day and that Elder Scrolls was very much uncharacteristic for them. They tried and made some interesting things for a while but once they hit mainstream they never went back to the interesting stuff. It also means I don’t think we’ll see an ES6 game worth talking about.
I actually started with Skyrim:SE, had a super silent heavy armor mage and loved it, then I made something and destroyed my save file;
[overexaggeration ahead]: A week later I was riding on a unicorn as Waluigi through a HelloKitty cave, throwing spells of NSWF towards everything. Fun times.
Morrowind was excellent, but I don’t think knocking oblivion out is totally fair. Especially when you add the expansions sans horse armor dlc. Martin Septum frowns upon you.
I’d love an open world game where you start as a Star Trek ship and just explore for hundreds of hours, stumbling upon adventures/civilizations taken directly from the massive repo of lore that exists from all the shows.
Have you tried Bridge Commander or the not actually star trek, but still totally star trek game Artemis?
They’re basically that. Randomly generated scenarios where you, and a few friends, command a Starfleet vessel to solve dilemmas or just exist in the world. The fun is mostly in the MP aspect (though Bridge Commander can be played solo), and the missions are pretty samey and mostly explained through text briefings. But it really feels like being on the bridge of the Enterprise.
I am very excited about this. The original was the first horror game that I actually had to take breaks from because I was getting so scared. The story was pretty mind blowing.
When’s the last time you heard the word metaverse? Love all the companies that tried to immediately follow, assuming it was going to be a thing. They’re probably on to AI now.
Remember that the free version of Unity is completely free and no money gets sent to Unity. Boycotting all Unity games only hurts the devs, except when you know the game was made with a Pro version
And? Sometimes tough choices have to be made to stand up for the greater good!
If devs realise people don’t want to support unity, and enough people vote with there wallets, they move to something else. Yes it might suck for some devs who can’t/won’t move but then thats there choice, just like it’s my choice to say screw unity!

My jump freighter was lost and every year it was more of a grind to cover losses and just wasn’t fun anymore which is really the biggest problem! Nerf’s made ships bland and anything unique was nerfed so it was no longer unique… and now so much has changed there’s just too much hassle to figure things out! 😞
And it’s not like I can afford the electric to run a gaming pc these days anyway! 🤦♂️
2 that come to mind are Adom and caves of qud are very similar in terms of designs and inspirations but share very little in common graphics wise are from being all 2d-esque. You can explore dungeons in a roguelike fantasy world.
Ever heard of Spiderweb Software? They’ve been putting out lo-fi old-school cRPGs for nearly 30 years now. Take a look at Avernum: Escape from the Pit (a remake of their first game, Exile) and see if that scratches the same itch.
