Is a Quest 3 really worth it? angielski

I have been really tempted to jump into VR for a little while now, I tried it when the quest first came out, the very first one but it was too blurry and made me dizzy. I’ve considered getting back into it again, but the thing that has made me really hesitant is I’ve heard that VR is not in the greatest place and that it’s...

!deleted6508 avatar

I don’t even think you need the PC to go with it, really. There’s not much now that is both worth playing and isn’t also just natively on the Quest besides Alyx. And even Alyx is mostly just a “once through and done” game that is fairly short. Worth getting if you already have a PC; not worth building a PC for.

I built my PC for PCVR and the Q2. But with my Q3 there is literally only 1 VR thing I still do on the PC and that’s Heat. I also play non-VR games in it for a larger screen. Not to mention that VRChat now looks better in the standalone VR app than my now aging PC does (I’m still rocking a 1660 Super).

If you just wanna dip your toes into VR and see if it’s worth it, the Quest 3 is perfect for it because you don’t need to also buy or build an expensive PC unless you really want some PCVR exclusives.

There’s the Pico 4 if you can get one in your country. Instead of Meta, it’s ByteDance.

I wonder when the Switch emulator titled “YASE” (literally “Yet Another Switch Emulator”) will show up and bring back an old tradition.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Is is the theory that little, invisible gremlins are just constantly pulling things down? 🤔

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It just works like the way Skyrim VR just works or will it make HL2 the same kind of experience as HL: Alyx?

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

That’s the difference; does the mod allow interaction with the world like Alyx, or is it just you’re there, but still using basic 2D controls to manipulate shit (press E to use a door instead of grabbing the handle and pushing/pulling)?

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It’s the Source engine. Which Alyx is made in too.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Gabe was actually pretty wealthy even before he left Microsoft to form Valve.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Copping out of an obligation?

Dude, not finishing the story and leaving us all on a cliffhanger for seventeen fucking years and then giving this as an excuse is the real cop out.

Looking back, I actually don’t like what Half-Life did to the genre. It didn’t push it forward; it made everything after a linear, set-piece experience with minimal replay value. It might have been different back in the day, but it wasn’t something I had hoped other developers clung to like they did.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Linear, set-piece story-telling.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

:It doesn’t necessarily have to be open world as is currently used these days. The OG Doom isn’t exactly linear, but also isn’t open world in any sense. Remove the loading times between levels and it would be open world in the way that term was originally used. The desirable aspect of an open world, for me, has more to do with the continuity of the play space than how games calling themselves open world games are designed. Free to explore the map without it just being a series of hallways with only one actual path and maybe 1 dead end per fork where they stick a “secret” or treasure.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I’m still waiting for the PS9. Can’t imagine how much nanospore technology is gonna cost.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Hl1 and hl2 are not really connected plotwise and can be enjoyed separately. There’s some small references and a couple characters you wouldn’t necessarily know even if you played HL1, because HL1 didn’t have much of a focus on that kind of story-telling.

The series is certainly a must play because of how much it influenced the industry. Going back to it now may not seem like it’s all that great; but you gotta keep in mind, it was one of the very first FPS games designed this way. Before Half-Life, FPS games were all just basically Doom clones.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Not unless they had some special bundle for HL2 I can’t remember.

Ep1 had to be purchased. Ep2 came with The Orange Box (which also contained TF2 and Portal 1 as well as Richochet, though it wasn’t advertised).

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

No. They publicly stated the cancellation of episode 3 years ago when it was still relevant, and is one of the reasons I was always confused about every single rumor that HL3 was going to be a thing; they never announced a HL3 and they already said Episode 3 wasn’t coming out. Where the heck did the HL3 rumors come from?

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I probably just remember EP2 only because it was released then and how I got it. I already had HL2 and ep1 at the time.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

For that sweet, sweet, $0.15 in ad revenue.

Kolanaki,

Kolanaki,

I got super prepared for Oblivion to be as complex and difficult as Morrowind and was severely disappointed by it even at launch. Skyrim was slightly better than Oblivion in terms of mechanical complexity (dual wielding, how magic works, the forts, etc), but also even more streamlined in others (like how skills and leveling work).

I’ve played the absolute shit out of all 3 (as well as FO3, NV and 4) though. There is just some inexplicable draw to them. And it’s that very thing that Starfield lacks that had me rush the MQ and just stop playing once it was over.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

God of War originally was Greek; but the newest one has fucking everything. Greek, Roman, Viking, etc.

A lot of roguelikes have pretty much every mythological creature plus their own made up shit.

Age of Mythology was built around this idea.

Path of Exile has pretty much everything by now.

Kolanaki,

“We didn’t expect to sell any, but we are pleasantly surprised to see it has sold at least 2 units.”

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Wait… This is an entire game? I’ve seen memes of it and I thought it was about an update to Animal Crossing.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I remember when World of Warcraft was a pretty serious looking game

I think you’re seeing it through rose-tinted nostalgia because the aesthetic style has never changed. Only actual tech used to render the graphics, which has made it look less plastic.

Giant, hulking, musclebound men that are wider than belief wearing pauldrons three times bigger than their barrel-chested selves… So serious.

Spyro the Dragon here wouldn’t look out of place even back before Burning Crusades came out.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Damn… Wish I still had it because I wanna check out what that Death Note game is like. Though it does sound like it’s basically Among Us but with a Death Note skin.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I’ve played it several times during those.

It’s never improved. It’s a piece of shit game designed to take money from morons.

Defending it isn’t going to make your loss of money any less painful.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Oh shit. I didn’t even know about X3FL.

Gonna have to reinstall X3 now.

I got X4 because hella X3 fans said it was better than X3; but those people are fucking crazy. X4 sucks major by comparison.

Are any games using neural networks for better hard AI that doesn't cheat? angielski

Playing complex strategy games for many years, one of the things that irks me the most is that hard AI levels often just give the dumb AI cheats to simulate it being smarter. To me, it’s not very satisfying to go against cheating AI. Are any games today leveraging neural networks to supplant or augment hand-written decision...

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

Yeah, but it’s not like an LLM or nueralnet thing. The kind of AI used for video games doesn’t need all that to feel smarter/harder.

Making a bot harder is actually easier than making it easier. It’s super straightforward to make one that always wins and is perfect. It’s more involved making a bot that doesn’t always take the best path or the most efficient way of completing the thing. I, personally, could make a Rocket League bot that plays the game better than any human since it’s all just math, and the computer is a calculator. I don’t think I would be able to make one a human player could actually beat though.

L4D has a mechanic like what the OP wants. It’s just not very good (IMO it overcorrects way too hard in both directions). Every time you win or lose or this happens too much, and this happens too little, it keeps track of that and then just adjusts things to change it up. Like if you sprint through one stage without resistance, the next stage will have more infected to deal with. They even gave it a name: the AI Director.

The alien in Alien Isolation is like that; but it is better done.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I can’t believe that shit came out after I graduated high school. I feel like I played it while still in school; I graduated in 2003.

Kolanaki,

I live where Trevor lives :(

At least I’m old enough to get the references in SA. It’s all hood and cop movies from the 90’s.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I mean, I played all of them as they released, at least from 3 onward. I picked up GTA2 for PS1 from a discount bin way before 3 was even announced which is what had me so hyped for 3 in the first place. Though for 3 I waited until it was on PC as I didn’t have a PS2 then; but by VC I had a PS2 and had SA on pre-order (I still have the bandana bonus from it somewhere).

My recollection of when things happened is fuzzy AF though lol

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I mean, many of us are trying. It’s fuckin’ hard tho when your opposition has billions of dollars and politicians in their back-pocket and our side’s greatest asset is the voice of Gordon Freeman from Ross’s Game Dungeon presents Freeman’s Mind.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I remember someone trying to tell me Vivi in FF9 was genderless and all I could think of was the scene where he and Zidane literally whip their dicks out and piss off a cliff.

Has anyone else noticed that Steam no longer requires self-updates that restart the client? angielski

It’s been awhile since I’ve noticed this honestly, probably around the time they refactored the library & different views for your games but I realized that those annoying self-updating client packages that would restart steam seem to be a thing of the past. I was looking through my download history and the thought occurred...

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I still see it semi-frequently, but more because I don’t use my computer as much and it’s usually off. So after a week of non-use, Steam has often accumulated enough updates to necessitate a reboot.

It is still not nearly as frequent as new Nvidia drivers needing a reboot, though.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

The “you died” text on it makes me wonder if it was some kind of special Dark Souls thing. But I don’t remember any special Dark Souls release on Xbox.

It could have been custom made back when they were doing that if you bought directly from MS. Not sure if they still do that, but I rememeber it being a thing back in, I think, the XB360 days.

@games

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

BOTW/TOTK is pretty memorable because it has a mechanical effect. Climbing becomes harder due to wet surfaces being slippery, and lightning can strike things killing them, damaging things and setting fires.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

If you pinch or irritate your skin doing this, you have weak skin and it shall be your downfall in the battlefields of Mario Party, and it will be deserved.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I dunno… I kinda think it’s actually more genuine? More honest? It’s early access because it’s not feature complete, and all the major milestones are just making it closer to completion, and generally are not charging for them. Using new features to advertise the uncompleted game makes sense, because maybe it wasn’t ready for some users in the first few iterations, but after a few milestones they might feel it’s worth it to jump in.

Meanwhile, a AAA game will label itself complete, then sell you things that they had planned right from the start of creating the game bit by bit, claiming they are extras. It’s not like they just spur of the moment designed and made them after release. They were already working on it when they released the base game.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

The only game where I ever found this to be cool, is the one where you literally do that to see because you’re playing as something that has no eyes and has to use echolocation.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Perception.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It did that in a myriad of ways too, not even just the wind. Foxes take you to shrines, there are flocks of birds that indicate haiku spots, and golden parrots that lead you to pretty much any of the POIs you have not yet found. There is even an outfit that comes with a firefly that glows when you’re nearby certain rare items.

I absolutely love it.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

To be fair, GTA also isn’t the size of Earth while using extremely high resolution satellite images as textures.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It would be rad af if you could not only run Doom off of one of these (because they already run on Windows so it’s probably easy as hell to run Doom on it), but also somehow get the scanner part to use its laser to make one of those holographic keyboards to actually play Doom on it without any external devices.

They’ll never be able to make Wirral Untethered.
