As someone who has played the game from day 1, and almost every day since, it’s a shame that this game that already is on auto drive will be crippled even further. If you have a bunch of friends who just wanna chat and don’t wanna play something competitive it fills all those roles.
I guess we should expect even less changes and content going forward… I know the level creation was just created to allow the community to provide free content so I wonder what else they can do to continue this or if the game will just die off.
I’d say they’ve really got the game to a good place at this point. In ways it still isn’t perfect, but if it had been like this at release then people would’ve absolutely loved it.
It’s something I think about for quite a lot of open world games, but it always seems like a waste that companies just move on from building up a game.
Really feels like they could spend years just adding to the world they’ve built.
Gamers proved to them that it didn’t matter if the game sucked on launch. Why keep building free updates when you can dump money into a new game? Which will most certainly be broken at launch again. Preorders need to stop being a thing and then we won’t have this type of mess anymore.

I don’t worry about the complaints of people who pre-order anymore. I sit back and eat popcorn watching them rage about the quality of the launch title after paying full retail.
I’ve Kickstarter, when I wanna give money to struggling artists who may or may not deliver on time (hi, Poots!) Big studios can kiss my ass. And I say this as a fan of CDPR! I almost preordered CP2077, because I felt bad not paying full price for The Witcher 3. But then I remembered it just fucking encourages them. I’d rather have paid for a print copy of the artbook, to give them extra money. Ah well.
That's why I was excited about the online partffew years ago - imagine gtav but in night city, backed by CDPR? If done well it's be printing money for them and guarantee constant updates and improvements for us. Unfortunately it just wasn't meant to be it seems :/
Seems like horrible dev practice to place save data of any kind in the Windows registry lmao. I get that it’s designed for storing user data in some respects but the registry is an old and fickle solution to setting global variables important for communication between processes and applications.
If you’re storing data that’s only ever needed by your own application, especially if it isn’t OS-related, you shouldn’t mess with the registry. Not only does it not have the performance you’d expect for most circumstances, but the registry has a real performance and stability impact even when outside of your app.
What’s worse, imo, is that this data is difficult to access for making backups, utilising cloud synchronization, and cross compatibility of your app.
Unity is a lot more borked than I thought, but KSP devs should probably be careful with what data serialisation APIs they mess with.
Devolver have done some terrific games going way back - I think the first time I played one of their games was the first Reigns for mobile and that was what, 2016?
Their name is a good indicator of quality so good for them thinking rationally about what they have to offer to players and not just taking the money
It might now win any new developers but people who work many years to build things like custom simulations have no way of switching to other platforms.
It depends on a lot of factors though. Creating your own engine is by far not an easy task. The more feature rich it shall become, the more work it will need. Especially if it should have high 3D graphics quality while also running performant. That alone can cost a good team at least 2 to 5 years.
Switching engines also depends on how portable your work from the old engine is with regard to the new engine. It may not be impossible but can still be a lot of work. The earlier that decision is made, the better.
If the devs are determined enough they can surely do a switch. But they might sweat a lot. And especially for smaller studios, or studios without sufficient funding, this quickly becomes a matter of financial survival.
So it’s not impossible, yes. But don’t take that lightly as well.

Not to mention I’m guessing a good amount of indie devs are not abstracting every detail of interacting with the engine from the getgo in the chance they want to swap engines down the line. But generally speaking I can’t imagine that’s a common tactic. But even if it did your still going to have to recreate every new implementation for your interfaces and there are bound to be differences here that are gonna take some time.
JRPGs are a very distinct genre, and either you like it or you don't. The idea that it shouldn't get its own descriptor when it's clearly different from a crpg or other approaches to RPGs is nonsense.
Just a guess, but I would suspect it's because it's one of the few game genre's that has a nationality tied to it and it probably feels like a box they can't escape -- just because of where they're from.
To them, it's just their own spin on an RPG. No matter how much they change to make it appeal to a broader audience, they're always going to be a JRPG, which feels very limiting. It's always going to be "it's an amazing RPG if you like JRPGs", which to someone making the game probably makes you feel less than. No other country has that.
It's similar to splitting k-pop or even j-pop out. TO people making the music, they probably just want to be considered on a world stage as great pop music. Not just K-pop album of the year.
Even if people here don't mean it negatively, doesn't mean it doesn't feel like a shitty box to people. We rarely apply the same sort of boxes to things from other countries. You don't hear Abba or Robyn are the best S-pop artists of the last 50 years.
But not every rpg from Japan is a JRPG. Not all JRPGs are from Japan.
If you don't want to be put into the JRPG box, make something that isn't a JRPG. They're in a box for a reason, and it's because they're markedly different from other RPG formats.
Then again, maybe the question can be raised about FFVII - Rebirth. But still, I would say that the question is raised anyway because it’s a FF (a series which largely contributed to cement the JRPG genre) and a remake of a game which is indubitably JRPG, not because it’s an RPG developed by a Japanese team.
Gotta wonder how many people are down voting because they think the title is moralizing, when it’s anything but that.
There’s nothing like going for a nice long walk around the world of The Witcher 3 and meeting some of the locals there. They say the nicest things. “Sod off, you misborn clod,” a guard will tell me. “Got so fucked up once, blood came out me ears,” a chap at the docks will announce. Or if I’m really lucky, “Go fuck your mums tits!” What a world to live in.
The thing is, I love this about the game. Being scolded by the ruddy-faced inhabitants of The Witcher 3 has long been one of my favourite things, ever since I first played it eight years ago.
Yeah, I call complete bs. Should they ever get a large amount (majority) of marketshare with the Xbox brand, they’ll absolutely do that.
Microsoft is gonna Microsoft. Just look how they abuse their Windows marketshare to try and shove Microsoft Edge down your throat. The latest trick I encountered at work was that Outlook now has its own setting for which browser to open links in, it doesn’t respect the OS default browser anymore by default.
The problem with statements like these are even if Phil is telling the truth right now there’s no saying what will happen 7 years later.

Consumers don’t own games especially on consoles where they are too tightly tied up with the company who made the hardware. Don’t take this statement too seriously because you never know what will happen.
But he’s not even telling the truth right now. All the FTC documents have shown everything he’s publicly said in the last 5 years has been nothing but lies.
Of course they will claim stuff changes, but the internal documents show that it’s always been lies, always.
