It created a genre. And it was surprisingly competent at what it sent out to do. In hindsight it was a miracle. Brand new technology harnessed to birth the 3D platformer. It was amazingly ambitious all around.
I feel like I'm the only person that grew up with Mario 64 but doesn't love it. I was really excited by it initially but when I played the game properly it just had this oppressive feeling of isolation and melancholy to it that was so off-putting.
Funny, I went blind into RDR2 and, not knowing about John’s story, the epilogues felt so weird and out of place. I still can’t really get into his story, maybe because on a subconscious level it feels like it broke the closure I had from Arthur’s. But yeah, RDR2 really is a fantastic game. They nailed pretty much everything.
I could totally see how not knowing about John’s story would break the closure from Arthur’s if you weren’t aware. But yeah, i agree, it’s really fantastic
RDR2 is one of the best story games ever. It’s one of probably 3 or 4 I would call masterpiece, and it legit made me cry. I connected with the characters, I felt the pain of the gang falling apart, I felt fear and pity for dutch, it was just amazing. RDR2 is one of those few games where you can say "sure, it has amazing gameplay, the side games are fun, and it plays great, but I don’t play it because it’s one of the most fun games to play, I play for the story "
Watching Dutch slowly descend into paranoia and separate himself from Arthur (primarily due to Micah’s manipulation) was a wonderful bit of environmental storytelling. It was a B-plot that was running in the background whenever you return to the gang campsite… But Arthur only really begins to see it after it is too late for him to stop. Because by the time Arthur realizes what is happening, Dutch has already firmly made up his mind about Arthur, and Arthur has already started trying to get out of the life. And Arthur having doubts only serves to cement Dutch’s paranoia.
It was amazing storytelling. It was never about saint Denis, or the heists, it was about the little things you overheard in camp, the gang itself. Truly a amasterpiece
My wife and I were looking at Croc and just talking about getting it for SD. My biggest issue is controls. I would like to know if it is easy/hard to get the controls working. Im tired of spending weekends getting a couple games working not off of steam.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. I’ve been playing through the Castlevania Advance collection on Steam and this is the next one up. I’m up to the fight with Death but he’s stomping me into the ground so I either need to level up some more or experiment with different souls.
Thank you so much for putting this together. I really do look forward to reading these! Must take so much work prepping and finding this, but man it’s just great.
I’m the weirdo who thinks that writing these up is just the most fun I could have. Last year I did these weekly on Reddit, and I missed it a lot when I left that site. So…I’m so glad there are people here who enjoy these. I’m so glad I returned to Lemmy!
Yep we really do love them. Hopefully persons keep up the engagement on your posts. And also, hoping we’ll get some more to help create content in this exciting sphere. Thanks for what you do and glad you get a kick out of this! I’ll explore how I can try to help create some content too that inspires me. Something I can nerd out about as well!
I can’t choose an absolute favorite, that’s like choosing a favorite child.
It’s a toss up between the Mass Effect Trilogy, Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher (in partiuclarly 3) and (most) of Fallout games (but in particular 1 and 2).
If you were to put a gun to my head I’d probably pick either Mass Effect Trilogy or Cyberpunk 2077, probably based on what game i’ve played for the millionth time most recently.
It seems like a game that has quite a lot going for it, the gameplay looks pretty cool, I like the art direction, and performance and visuals actually seem to be quite polished at launch. However, I just know I’ll get tired of it, as it is another game that prioritizes being big, with tons of repetitive content, too big of a world, and somehow too many protagonists, which seemingly brings down both the overall gameplay and story.
It’s fine that there are games like this that cater to people who want large, expansive worlds to immerse themselves in, but I do get a bit disappointed that “every” single player AAA game is like this. There are many other games for me to play, so it is not like I’m starving for games, but it feels like I miss out on a ton of games I could potentially have liked if the direction was slightly different
I feel ya, AC games are a bit full regardless of which way they go. They just never locked down the best aspects. Early AC only needed tweaks to parkour, combat and bug fixes but the new ones went so far rpg that I cant even bother. Just too big
