savbran, do games w What is the next "grown up game" now that Minecraft only goes for children?

I think the best approach is: search, try and stick with games you enjoy the most 🙂

mholiv, do games w What is the next "grown up game" now that Minecraft only goes for children?

Slightly off topic here, but the most “grown up” way to play “grown up” games is to just play what you want and not care about what people think.

If you like Minecraft stick with it. Or just play any other games you enjoy. Only kids care what their peers think of the games they play.

haui_lemmy,

Its not about what people (or peers) think. Its about the fact that minecraft isnt as fun as it used to be. Sorry if that wasnt clear from my post.

Pons_Aelius,

Its about the fact that minecraft isnt as fun as it used to be (to you)

It sounds more like you have changed, rather than minecraft.

That is normal. People's tastes change.

What do you think are currently games that are not focused on children and have great potential?

That is such an open ended question as to be impossible to really answer well.

You have stated you no longer enjoy minecraft but not what you do like playing. So again, quite hard to make a recommendation.

Do you want building sims? Tropico or Cities: Skylines.

Other than that, I have no idea what to recommend.

haui_lemmy,

Thanks for the feedback.

I do enjoy games like factorio, satisfactory, now jagged alliance 3, dyson sphere program, witcher (1+3, 2 not so much).

The thing that I liked about minecraft was that it was so tough to get into and the mechanics we‘re pretty obscure. if you didnt spoil it for yourself by looking it up you could really watch your brain working.

I made a server where players really needed to think to get going but most new players gave up frustrated because it was too hard.

And thats ultimately what bothers me. Minecraft in its infancy was cool for me for totally different reasons than for others (especially now) and I‘m probably just fed up with being the oddball all the time.

That make sense?

Pons_Aelius, (edited )

That make sense?

Yes, it does.

It sounds like the discovery of the mechanics was more rewarding for you as making progress and winning.

I‘m probably just fed up with being the oddball all the time.

Don't be. It is the oddballs of the world that are actually the agents of change.

Having read this I would suggest you have a look at Kerbal space program. On the surface it is a fairly simple game but the mechanics of actual space flight are very complex.

A good XKCD about Kerbal.

haui_lemmy,

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually own that game. It’s a lot of fun, i agree.

haui_lemmy,

Thats a good point. I did change as well.

I think I have this game on switch. I only played a little bit and gave up because I sucked so much. Maybe I should do exactly as you are, get it for cheap on deck and scale down the difficulty to story mode. I've heard it was a good game.

Ashen44, do gaming w What are some good games that have a bad reputation due to unreasonable expectations?

I’ll throw my hat into this ring with Monster Hunter Rise. I often spend my time browsing monster hunter content and almost every time Rise gets brought up it’s just to talk about how much worse it is than World. I’ll say it now, yes I also prefer World to Rise, but holy fuck do I still love Rise.

To start with, let’s compare the two. Monster Hunter is developed by 2 teams who take turns making games. World was developed by the mainline team who are known for more grounded and polished games. Rise was developed by the portable team who are known for flashier and more experimental games. Most players started the Monster Hunter series with World (it’s Capcom’s #1 best selling game of all time after all) and so going from the high detail immersive World to the action packed fast paced Rise was extremely jarring. A massive portion of the hate just comes from the fact that it was different.

Also, as you can probably guess from the name, the portable team makes games for portable systems, such as the Switch, which immediately gives them less power to work with system-wise. Couple this with the fact that Rise was developed during the pandemic, and Rise was really dealt a rough hand. Graphically it’s a massive downgrade from World, and it even ended up releasing without an ending or any non-scripted elder dragon fights.

In spite of all this, even though Rise lacks a ton of the personality and charm of World, it’s still an absolute blast to play! The combat is stellar, and while it may not have the weight World had, its fluidity and high adrenaline action makes it some of the best in the series. The sunbreak expansion especially really improved the game in every single way, fixing a ton of the issues people had with the base game. I feel that most players already moved on after base Rise and so didn’t get to experience that improvement unfortunately.

TL;DR play Monster Hunter Rise. It’s really good. Just don’t go in expecting the same experience as World.

Pillars of Eternity is very good. The writing is fun and I liked a lot of the classes. Especially Cipher.

I think the second one is better though. You get a ship! And the powers are per-fight instead of per-rest, so you don’t have to worry about camping much at all. Also multiclassing is fun. I wasn’t a heavy optimizer but my rogue/monk just punched stuff into chunks.

doggish,

It’s on my Steam wishlist. Since I already have a copy of Tyranny I’ll probably play that before Deadfire, but I definitely want to play it! Hopefully Avowed will be good too whenever that comes out.

Definitely No Man’s Sky

It was bad at launch, sure, but the expectations of the game were way outta proportion to what a game could deliver on

Navarian,

The problem I had with no man’s sky is that a large amount of the out of proportion expectations were a direct result of the developers over promising, rather than consumers just being over hyped.

That looks awful.

If you want an actual egro vertical mouse, don’t buy a gimmick. I’ve got both wired and wireless zelotes vertical mice from Amazon, would recommend.

As a soon potential buyer, how is the track pad for mouse central games? My biggest concern is playing old crpgs with anything like the control scheme on Switch. It was a waste of 30 bucks to get Baldur‘s Gate on Switch for the control alone in my experience.

doggish,

I love it. The key is setting the triggers as the left and right clicks though. I find clicking the trackpad not great for precision. There is a certain level of tinkering/customizing that will be needed to get the most out of the controls.

I’ve played several 20 year old FPS games with absolutely no native controller support and completed them all. If you put in a little work in getting the controls how you like them it makes it hard to play stuff without all the Steam Deck options.

Macaroni_ninja,
@Macaroni_ninja@lemmy.world avatar

Trackpad mouse controls are great, even for strategy games. You can fine tune them even further if default is not for your liking.

Aside from the Steam OS I think the trackpads are the other big feature for me to choose SD over the competition.

Great game. If you even remotely like PoE, give Tyranny a try.

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

I actually loved Tyranny more, but act 3 is seriously rushed. Also new game+ is meh at best.

micka190,

Tyranny was such a fun game (rushed act 3 aside). I really wish we’d get more games that explore being the bad guys without:

  • Immediately trying to overthrow them
  • Making it into a joke/comedy
MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

True true. We need more anti-heroes.

micka190,

No no no, see that’s the opposite of what I want. I want more games where you can just straight-up be the villains. Not an anti-hero, not someone who’s trying to change the system from within, not a secret rebel who needs to go along with the bad stuff to keep their cover.

I want more games where you can just be a villain. I want more games where you can rob the banks, kill the NPCs that aren’t listening, have a big fortress of doom, and fight-off heroes who are trying to stop you.

Not because of some gray moral backstory that somehow justifies some of it (or that will have people jumping through hoops to justify it like with Mr. Freeze and his wife).

Just because you can.

Tyranny gives you a bunch of options to just be evil and not enough RPGs do that properly.

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, I misunderstood you. Yeah, it would be refreshing to see that as well.

Macaroni_ninja,
@Macaroni_ninja@lemmy.world avatar

I loved Tyranny, but the combat was much worse compared to PoE. For newcomers I would recommend the lowest difficulty setting so they can enjoy the excellent writing and story.

Dammit PoE is way too overloaded of an acronym. I thought you were referring to Path of Exile and got confused.

What other crpg style games have you played and enjoyed? I’m trying to figure out if I should play it or give something else a shot

Bassman1805,

BG3 runs like a dream on steam deck.

Virulent,

Until act 3 😬😬

doggish,

I’m sure I’ll pick it up eventually. One of my friends had to have a talk with her husband about how much she was playing that game.

snugglesthefalse,

BG3 isn’t a bad game but it hasn’t really grabbed me.

Macaroni_ninja,
@Macaroni_ninja@lemmy.world avatar

On what settings? Mine mimics a jet engine every time I fire up BG3, no matter what settings or scaling I used so far and I already have the quieter fan in the SD.

maniacal_gaff,

I think Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2 are better gameplay wise but the world building and lore in Pillars is unmatched.

doggish,

I wanted to check out Pillars because I think Avowed looks cool, but I do see Divinity Original Sin 2 on sale pretty frequently so I might pick it up. I’m still trying to take a big bite out of my backlog before buying more games I won’t end up playing for years. (I finally played GTA5 last month.)

bionicjoey,

Personally I was a huge fan of Tyranny. It’s built on the same engine as POE, but I liked the story, worldbuilding, and characters a lot more.

doggish,

I also got that game for free from Amazon and I’m planning on playing that next! The premise is pretty cool!

WadeTheWizard,
@WadeTheWizard@kbin.social avatar

We need more villain-as-protagonist games. Tyranny giving you evil choices that were both meaningful, and reasonable, is so much better than the usual "I'm the hero, but I do enjoy kicking puppies on weekends" evil choices in most RPGs.

bionicjoey, (edited )

The thing is, it’s not really villain-as-protagonist. It’s more like “goon-as-protagonist”. You are just a cog in the real villain’s machine. That’s why the choices are so interesting. Because they are often trolley-problems constrained by the world Kyros has created. So you don’t get choices like “will you kill this baby or not” because then it’s easy to not be the bad guy. You get choices like “Kyros demands someone from this town is getting killed. You can choose this baby or this old person. You can also choose not to make a choice, but that would be shirking your job as a judge and omniscient daddy Tunon wouldn’t like it”

doggish,

I loved the original Fallout games. Pillars is a lot like the original two Baldur’s Gate games and the other games like it. Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment. Though I haven’t really earnestly played any of them. I did play the Dark Alliance games when they were new and I was a kid, but those are action RPGs.

Amaltheamannen,

The two Pathfinder games by owlcat are also great.

Stamau123,

Torment: tides of Numenera plays similar to PoE, although I’m mainly recommending it because it was my gateway into the Numenera universe, itself more interesting than the OK game.

t3rmit3, do gaming w What are some good games that have a bad reputation due to unreasonable expectations?

Metal Gear: AC!D

It was such a great adaptation of stealth-action, but people didn’t like that it had “Metal Gear” in the name. I absolutely adored the card collecting and deck-building, and the very deep, seemingly-emergent combos you could pull off.

Lmao someone in the comments said they were sold a used one (at brand new price) straight from the manufacturer.

Then someone replied to them saying basically, “that’s on you from ordering from the manufacturer instead of a trusted store like Amazon. I had no problems with them.”
